Antenna - Come On Spring just posted on You Tube
Just saw that someone has posted the ’Come on Spring’ film clip from Antenna up on You Tube recently. In a career of abberations Antenna was an abberation. If this was the only thing you heard from my musical history you would have little idea about my musical history. Antenna was a collaberation between myself, Dave Faulkner of the Hoodoo Gurus as well as Stu McCarthy and Justin Frew from electronic band Southend. We recorded one album entitled ’Installation’ in 1998. 2JJJ picked up the singles ’Come on Spring’, ’Divine’ and ’10-4’ and gave all of them massive exposure. It was, however’ a time of flux in the record industry - the record label we were on had new leadership and new distribution and the new distribution had new owners. The result of this was that, even though many people who’d never even consider listening to something I’d been invloved in were saying things like "I just heard that song ’Come on Spring’ on Burke’s backyard, I love it, where can I get it" the record company was unable to get the single into shops for people to buy.
The project, although very accessible, proved to be an exercise in challenging people’s preconceptions - Kim and Dave doing electronica?, Kim singing such a breezy and beautiful song?, young electro dudes hanging out with old rock bastards? Kim writing a commercial song?!...it was too much for everyone to compute.
A couple of years ago Mick Harvey of the Bad Seeds recorded the song ’Come on Spring’ for his ’One Man’s Treasure’album, giving the song a new life. Ironically it has become better known than the original simply because of the unavailability of the original. While I’m grateful to Mick for taking the trouble to do such a worthy rendition, I would like people who are interested to be able to hear the original. There is the inevitable ’chinese whispers’ factor working here. Mick’s version eschews the subtlety of the original for a darker feel, and the chords are a little different. The Antenna version has a comparitively lush production with, strings, sampled loops and layered backing vocals whilst Mick’s version is stark and earthy. I would never say that one version is more valid, however, the original adheres more closely to the intentions of the writer composer(me).
In response to all of those who have asked me over the years, "what happened with Antenna", have a look on you tube. At least there is this artifact.

WOLFAGE
yes... i do think that, although its never been uttered aloud, in some circles its considered quite passe to even acknowledge the current plague of wolves that has been upon us for most of the naughties. and far be it from me to be a 'party pooper'. let anyone 'wolf down' as much as they like i say! its pretty much the same thing as when in the nineties every one who was anyone was getting 'dirty'. first it was sonic youth with 'dirty', then 'dirty boots', then we had 'magic dirt'...the 'dirty three'...(can't actually think of another off-hand but you do know that the nineties was the decade of the great unwashed) etc etc.. there have always been wolves. howlin' wolf, virginia woolf, digby wolf, the big bad wolf...for a few weeks even i insisted on being referred to as 'dirty wolf' (hedging my bets - on the one hand 'going with the pack' and on the other getting in on the future trend of nostalgia for the nineties) but i soon tired of that and reverted to my real name of salmon which in fact does mean 'wolf of the sea' anyway.

like i said before , " i plan on doing lots of solo shows"
Category: Music
well... i said i probably wouldn't be doing solo shows and karma dictated that some possibilties of such would come therefore have to come my way. people asking if the darling downs or, perhaps just i, might want to support them. as the d.d. are trying hard not to devalue the currency i've relented on the no solo rule. i'm going to get half of the SALMON percussive arsenal i.e. mike stranges to back me up on drums and i'm basicaslly just gonna have some fun playing some old faves like stooges, heartbreakers (not tom petty), some early scientists tunes, some new tunes. dunno where i'm gonna go with this but i'll make sure its fun (for me that is... screw you! if you got any kind've taste it'll be fun for you too)

an introduction to the salmon school of thought
welcome to the kim salmon myspace page. i'm basically gonna use this to let people know what i actally am doing in music as opposed to all the stuff that people might find elsewhere on the net that i didn't put there and is out of date. i'm not knocking whats been said, good or bad, about me by the way. it just needs to be pointed ou that it is just someones opinion. indeed all i have to say about myself is just my opinion but i can let you know what i'm doing these days.
firtsly, i gave up wearing the shirts long ago (no i don't go barechested, i'm just refering to the 70's style shirts that i wore from the late seventies through to the early 'naughties'.). i hardly ever do solo shows, and if i do am more likely to do something with tape loops and an akai sampler than renditions of old scientists tunes.
i am one half of a 2 piece combo with the redoubtable ronald s peno called 'the darling downs'. this would be where the 'country' in my musical description comes from. we like to use the term appalacian lulabies to describe some of our music. its acoustic and, people say,a lot gentler than what everyone is used to from either of us.when i figure out how i'll stick some music up there for you do get an idea
i recently did a reformation with the 'blood red river' lineup of the scientists (minus the late, great brett rixon of course). we played at the uk festival all tomorrows parties and did a couple of london dates. that went so well that we got a live cd out of it. that'll be out soon and we'll be playing again next year in australia uk and eaurope and hopefully the states
i also did a spanish festival with the surrealists a month or so ago and have a show booked in at the east brunswick club with black cab supporting on november 25
i also have a band called SALMON which i won't describe, suffice to say that it is instrumental, features six guitarists and tewo drummers and is extremely HEAVY! we have a live cd taken from the sydney metro a couple of years ago. this will be out on the spanish label bang! records early next year.
anyway, give me time to work this myspace stuff out. i'll get the decorators in as soon as i can and will have some music for you to listen to.
ok now piss off.
sorry, i mean "lovely to make your aquaintence and look forward to our ongoing dialogue"
kim
