The new Brian-Knight.com (with freebees!)
Current mood: knighted

After a few years of infrequent updates and rejecting every new site design I've attempted, I've decided to simplify my web presence with Word Press. I have to give props to David Niall Wilson (StorytellersUnplugged.com, Ancient Eyes, and the upcoming Vintage Soul) and Beth and Brian Cartwright (Big Kahunas of Cargo Cult Press), for turning me on to the versatility and functionality of Word Press.

My first challenge, other than learning to use all of the new Word Press doohickeys, is to fill the page with content. New content will include videos, fiction excerpts, order info for all my books, and more frequent updates. I'm allowing comments on all posts and updates (why the hell not, it's free content).

Just today I posted the first freebee on my new site, a free PDF version of my long out-of-print novellete, Heart of the Monster. Drop on by Brian-Knight.com! Read the free story, say howdy, and be sure to stop by often!

On failing, help P&E, zombies in WW2, and sex with turkeys.

It's late and I don't have much time, but I've fallen behind in my notifications.

First, I have a new Storytellers Unplugged essay that the writer's amoung you might want to check out.

Second, and this is very important for the writer's, especially the writers new to the publication game, Preditors and Editors needs our help.  Dave Kuzminski of P&E has been our friend for over a decade now, compiling a comprehensive list of publishers, agents, and just about anyone else associated with the publishing biz, giving advice and direction based upon the collective experience of thousands of writers.  P&E is a listing of the good, bad, and crooked.

Now Dave Kuzminski and P&E are being sued by an agent who managed to land herself on P&E's 20 Worst Agents list, and an attorney for the granddaddy of all scuzzy subsidiary publishing companies.

Dave and P&E have been helping us for over a decade.  Now they need our help.  Click the link below to donate to P&E's defense fund, if you can.  Every little bit helps.

Third, my newest novella, Apocalypse Green, is now available to order from The Horror Mall.  If you're a fan of my work, a fan of Alex McVey's work, or a collector of Bloodletting Press, there is only a limited amount of time to pick this title up.  It's selling quickly, and will probably be gone in the next month or so.

Bloodletting Press is announcing the first title in our all new Novelette Series called APOCALYPSE GREEN by Brian Knight. Each book in this series will be limited to 300 signed and numbered perfect bound editions and 52 hardcover slipcased lettered editions. (Lettered edition will be shipping in May.)

KG 200 was a secret, specialized branch of the German Luftwaffe formed before World War 2 for espionage and recognizance. Though most of the documents detailing their most secret missions were destroyed before allied powers could seize them, some did survive.

One of these missions, code named Apocalypse, was the first known attempt at advanced biological warfare on humans. Though the records of Apocalypse are incomplete, the evidence confirms the horrific effects that Apocalypse had on one small farming village in Poland.

Only now, decades later, is the evidence being released to the public.

Last, my novella 1200 AM Live is also available from The Horror Mall

From Insidious Publications:

1200 AM Live is book Four in Insidious Publications' handmade Softcover Novella Series; perfect bound, and limited to 500 signed and numbered copies. Also available for the first time in Insidious Publications' history as a Lettered edition limited to 26 copies; entirely handcrafted, bound in genuine leather with a striking full color interior. And lastly, available in an extremely limited quantity of just five (5) copies as an Ultra Edition; bound in leather, masterfully traycased, including a paperback copy housed in the casing for the most discerning collector to use as a reading copy. And just for fun, you may have Brian Knight personally inscribe your Ultra Edition.

You can only purchase the very limited Ultra Edition at Insidious Publications' website (where the softcover and hardcover editions are also available).

Check out Fear Zone's review of 1200 AM Live here.

Could this be my big break?
Current mood: excited
Category: Writing and Poetry

Perhaps it's fitting that the new season of American Idol started tonight ...

So, today was one of those days.  It was a bad news day.  Nothing Earth-shattering, but enough bad news to wreck the next couple of weeks for me.  I capped it off with a visit to the dentist, and without going into too much boring detail, the news of that front was worse than expected as well.

By the time I arrived home and sat down to check my email I was reaching the apex of my slow burn.

Then I read the email that changed my day.

I almost deleted it out of hand thinking it was spam, but the words Amazon Breakthrough Novel caught my eye and sparkes something in my memory.  The Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award was a contest I entered months ago on a whim, and promptly forgot about.

Here's the breakdown: enter your unpublished novel, along with the excerpt and a short description, for a panel of judges to read and consider.  After the first round of rejections, the remaining semi-finalists will move to the next round.  After that, ten finalists, and then a single winner.  The grand prize is a big fat book contract.

The email was from the contest administrators, informing me that I was a semi-finalist.

As a semi-finalist, an excerpt of my entry is now up for public scrutiny.  The first three chapters of my young adult fantasy novel, Phoenix Girls – Accidental Magic, is available as a free pdf download, or a viewable and printable web page.

This is where – don't tell me you didn't see this coming – I ask for your help.  I call this act of beggary "The Three Rs."

Read:  I need you to go to my entry's page on Amazon.com and read it.  This shouldn't be too painful.  The excerpt is short and sweet.  I also happen to think it's pretty good, but I may be biased.

Write:  If you feel the excerpt is worthy, then please review it for me.  From my understanding of the process, customer reviews have a lot to do with me making it to the final round.

Repost:  If you like the excerpt, please repost this and encourage others to read and review my entry.  The more the better!

Much like American Idol, you may just help decide who the next Breakaway Novelist will be.  Unlike American Idol, you don't get to witness the screaming and crying (which has always been my favorite part I must admit).

Your humble writer,

Brian Knight

Writerly Advice - Random Humbugs To Round Off The Year
Category: Writing and Poetry

I'm in a bubble-bursting mood today, but I'm not sure that's really a bad thing.  Some bubbles need bursting.  Most of these little lumps of coal are meant for the newbies in this crazy business, who need every bit of advice they can get, and who also need a good bubble bursting every now and then to keep them honest.

The Insidious Brian Knight - 1200 AM Live!

Becasue I'm too lazy to write my own post, here is the Insidious Publications press release for my upcoming novella, 1200 AM Live!

Brian Knight

From: Insidious Publications Date: Dec 15, 2007 9:30 AM Due out this January is the new novella from Insidious Publications by Brian Knight, "1200 AM Live".

This is book 04 in IP's softcover novella series and as always, is completely produced and hand bound here in the IP office. It features full color interior illustrations rendered from the paintings of up and coming artist Hannah Walthers, who also provided the cover. This softcover is limited to 500 signed and numbered copies and sports French parchment endsheets and heavy linen signature sheets. It's a handsome book, if I do say so myself. Below, is a brief synopsis:

Deviance, criminal behavior, and sex with turkeys; it's all in a night's work for shock jock Andy Crow and his sidekick Charles Greene. You never know what you're going to hear when you tune to 1200 AM Live.

Explore the darker side of human nature with the inhuman Crow. Everyone has their kinks.

This is a creepy, sexy little ditty and not quite like anything I've ever read from Sir Brian in the past. Below you'll find a sample page from the softcover as well as a couple of the paintings that appear inside the book--

Now, normally, this is where I would thank you for looking and direct you to our website, but we're not quite finished yet. This book has become a very special release for IP, not only because it's the first book we've published for Brian Knight--I've been a fan of his work for several years--but we're also, for the first time, offering a hardcover edition.

This hardcover edition is limited to 26 signed and lettered copies. It's completely hand crafted and bound in leather. This edition features heavy linen endsheets and a complete linen interior. Nearly every page is a work of full color art, with custom borders to enhance your reading pleasure. Below you'll find a couple of sample pages, plus a photo of the interior of the actual book to give you a feel for what it would look like in your hands--

...but that's not where it ends. Also, in this lettered edition of "1200 AM Live", we've included a bonus story by Brian, "Toys in the Attic".

Sound pretty good? If so, wait, there's more.

We will also be releasing a 3rd edition of "1200 AM Live", that we lovingly call the ULTRA edition. We're only releasing five (5!) units of the ULTRA, signed and numbered. Each unit will include the leather bound hardcover and the softcover as a reading copy and will be housed in a custom, leather bound traycase. Also, Brian will personally inscribe each hardcover book in the ULTRA edition for the purchaser any way they want them. (There's a notation box on the order page to list the information you want to appear.) There may be a couple more surprises with this version, but we're still working on that. We'll update ASAP.

So, folks, that's it! Told you it was a lot of information and I hope I left nothing out. For pricing and other information, visit the IP website.

From James:

My latest novel, DEEPER is coming out from Necessary Evil Press in January and is available as of last night for pre-order. Apparently this one is going fast, too.
