Upcoming appearances (and Dr. Horrible.)
Category: Writing and Poetry

I get a lot of e-mail from people asking things like, "When are you going to come out to [insert name of hometown here] and sign some books?"

So, in the interest of giving everyone as much advance notice as possible, I've posted up the most current information about where and when I'll be attending conventions, booksignings, workshops, etc.

For those of you on Facebook, there's a list of events here. You can log on, get more information, invite your friends, etc.

If you're not on Facebook, you can hit my website. More specifically, the Tour Schedual page. It's not nearly as interactive, but it has all the information you need to stalk me.

Lastly but not leastly, I feel morally obliged to mention Joss Whedon's newest project: Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog.

Odds are you already know about it unless you've been living under a rock. But just in case you *haven't* heard, I thought I'd mention it. I also posted a blog about it with links to an interview I conducted with the lovely and talented Felica Day, who stars in the production as Penny.

That's all for now folks. Stay well.

The Contest.

In the interest of being fair, I've decided to make the little contest I'm having on Facebook available to everyone.

This will also keep people from joining Facebook just to participate. I don't want to encourage that kind of behavior. Seriously. Facebook is like a deep well that you throw all of your available free  time into. I wouldn't wish it on any of you...

So here's the deal.

You take a picture of your brand-new shiny paperback. Your picture reflects your deep, innermost feelings for the book. Maybe it's funny. Maybe it tells a story. Maybe it's full of blatant, tawdry sexiness in an attempt to appeal to my base desires.

At the end of the month, I will look at all the pictures, post the best of them in a blog, and give out fabulous prizes. Trust me. They'll be fabulous. I have some full-color promotional maps here that have never seen the light of day. Galley copies of the book. Some first edition copies of the UK edition. Maybe I'll even give out one of the old manuscript copies of the book I have laying around....

Anyway, here are the rules.

1. The picture doesn't need to include you, but it does need to include the paperback.

2. Photo manipulation is legal, but by no means required.

3. Multiple entries are allowed.

4. Pictures will be judged on their general coolness. Categories may include: "Most Awesome," "Most Funny." "Most Sexy" "Most Dramatic" and "Most Best."

4b. I reserve the right to add extra categories. That way, if your picture delights me, but it doesn't fit into any pre-determined category, I can still give you a prize.

4c. Since the international readers won't have access to the US paperback, I've created a new category to allow them to use their own native copies of the book: "Most Foreign." This will be the one category you don't have to use the paperback for.

For example:

You can post your photos up in the appropriate facebook group, or e-mail them to  the following address: paperback.contest {swirly at sign} gmail.com.

If you send a picture to that e-mail address, make sure to include:

  • The photo(s). (duh.)
  • Your name.
  • How you want the photo to be credited, if it's different than your name.
  • Your mailing address. (Where to send your fabulous prize.)

Contest is over at the end of the month.

The new addition to the family....
Category: Writing and Poetry

So apparently, when a book gets published, it either has a hard publication date, or a soft one. I don’t know if these are technical terms or not, but that’s how I’ve come to think of it....

When my book came out a year ago, it had a hard sell date. They even stamped the boxes with it. I wonder if I can still find the picture I took of it, back in the day.

Yeah. Here it is....

When I first saw this, I remember thinking, "Wow. They must take this release date thing pretty seriously."

Then I remember thinking about what someone would say if they had to call this number. "I need to report a violation?" Sounds dirty. Personally, I would probably go with something more dramatic. Something along the lines of screaming "Help! My book has been violated!"

So anyway, I was at a signing in Seattle this weekend, and I got two lovely surprises.

The first was that a lovely young woman showed up and described my book as, "a literary orgasm." Personally, I think that’s something we should put on the cover.

The second cool thing was this....

(I’m talking about the one on the right. The hardcover is just there to provide perspective.)

Yay! The paperback! Isn’t it just the cutest thing?

Now, the official release date is April 1st. But, apparently, this is a different sort of release date. I know this because when I was on my way home from Seattle, I stopped by the airport bookstores and saw copies on the shelves there too.

I just thought I’d let y’all know that it’s out there.

Hmmm.... Now I feel like I should say something sales-pitchy in order to encourage people to buy it. But I can’t think of anything halfway serious.

"The Name of the Wind: even in paperback it will still stop a bullet."

"Now with 100% less naked man chest!"

"Ladies, all the literary orgasmicness of the hardcover, conveniently travel-sized!"

That’s all I’ve got. If any of you have any flashes of marketing brilliance, you can leave them in the comments section below.

Hugs and Kisses,

pat

If you have questions....
Category: Writing and Poetry

...odds are that I've already answered them over here in my FAQ.

Or maybe the answer is over here in one of my Bajillion interviews.

It's not that I don't love you, or that I don't want to help. But the truth is, I put a lot of time and effort into writing my blog, maintinging the website, and giving interviews. If I end up answering 20 e-mails every day that ask me the same questions over and over, I'm never going to manage to get book two done for everyone to enjoy. Then my editor will kill me in a terrible rage.

I don't think any of us want that.

Thanks for understanding,

pat

If you’re looking for cool stuff....
Category: Writing and Poetry

... I hate to tell you, but this Myspace page probably isn't the place to find it.

I'm more active on Facebook, where I post up pictures, notes, and generally spend time dicking around. There's also a fan group that somone started there: Pat Rothfuss's Legion of Fanatical Minions. I take no responsibility for that name.

But the real goods are on the website that my publisher put together.

(patrickrothfuss.com) There are maps, cample chapters, and most importantly, a blog that I update a couple times a week with news and stories.

Just so y'all know. That's where the action is.

Fondly,

pat

The Quill Award...
Category: Writing and Poetry

Normally if someone asks me a question over e-mail, I just answer it directly. But if I get the same question several times, it lets me know I should post up the answer in a blog for everyone to see.

Over the last week I've had five people send me e-mails similar to this one:

Hey Pat,

Yesterday my friend Jake who is also a big fan of your book asked me if I'd gone and voted for your book for the quill award. I explained to him that you'd already won the quill award. We argued for a while, then, since I was right here by the computer, I thought I'd ask you directly.

I'm right, aren't I? You already won, didn't you?

Suz

P.S. Congratulations, by the way. You rock.

Luckily Suz, this is one of those situations where everyone is right.

You're right because I did win the Quill in the Science-Fiction/Fantasy category. I'll be heading out to New York and you'll be able to see me wearing a tux on NBC.

BUT, Jake is right too, because right now the voting is going on for the BIG quill award: the Book of the Year award.

You see, the winners for the individual categories (Romance, graphic novel, etc.) are voted on my a bunch of booksellers, librarians, and literati. But the Book of the Year is determined by popular vote. Which means you could go over there and vote for me, if you were so inclined.

And by over there I mean OVER HERE. (After you click, you need to click again on the link in that press release that says, "vote here.")

I think a lot of the confusion has come from the fact that they aren't running this award the way that we're used to seeing it. It's not like the Oscars where all the nominees show up and then the winner in each category is a big surprise. The only real surprise at the quills will be who wins Book of the Year.

Hope this clears things up for those of you who have been confused....

pat

P.S. For those of you who are interested in more frequent blog updates, you can check out the
BLOG ON MY WEBSITE. I really don't post here on Myspace very much...

Orson Scott Card Likes the Book....
Category: Writing and Poetry

The bland, matter-of-fact-ness of the above title in no way reflects my authory delight at discovering this NEWS POST by an author you might have heard of, Orson Scott Card.

The bit about the Name of the Wind about halfway down the page. For those of you who are link-phobic or too lazy to dig the piece about my book out of Card's long, multifarious post. Here's the good bits version:

Not a word of the nearly-700-page book is wasted.  Rothfuss does not pad.  He's the great new fantasy writer we've been waiting for, and this is an astonishing book. [...]

If you're a reader of fantasy or simply someone who appreciates a truly epic-scale work of fiction, don't go through this summer without having read it. At the very least it will keep you busy till the last Harry Potter comes out. But I warn you -- after The Name of the Wind, the Harry Potter novel might seem a little thin and -- dare I say it? -- childish.  You have been warned.

Yeah. I'll take that.

Did I mention that it was ORSON SCOTT CARD who wrote it?

Anyway, I just got back from a family weekend and I'm digging my way out from under about 500-600 emails. So if you're waiting for a response from me, thanks for your patience. If you're not waiting, that's fine too. You just keep on not waiting. That'll work out just fine.

Later,

pat

Updates to the website.
Category: Writing and Poetry

We just posted up new reviews, interviews, podcasts, etc on the website. So if any of that sort of thing is interesting to y'all, you might want to stop by and check it out.

I also do a blog or two every week on the website, so if you're looking for the most recent news, updates about where I'm doing signings, etc, you can bookmark that and check in on it every once in a while. I won't be updating very much here.

The most ridiculously flattering review ever....
Category: Writing and Poetry

Over the last couple weeks, my book has recived a lot of good reviews. But none have been as glowing as this one in the Onion.

It's insane. You'd think that my dad paid the reviewer off or something.

Amazon has listed The Name of the Wind as one of March's editor's picks.
Current mood: excited.
Category: excited. Writing and Poetry

I'm the only fantasy novel on the list. That makes me kinda proud.

AMAZON'S SIGNIFIGANT SEVEN

How cool is that?

Not only does it mean publicity for the book, which is awesome, but it also means people can pre-order the book for 40% off the cover price. That's cheaper than I can get copies from the publisher, and I wrote the thing....

Check it out.
