Shift
Category: Writing and Poetry

Shift

Come to this secret garden

You have been here before

Tasted exquisite fruit

Bathed

Immersed your senses

in its silent moons

Come to our hidden night—

In your heart of hearts

you conjured it

Scented it

with your perfume

The flame you see

dancing

as you descend

is my passion

Come join me in this ancient

longing

to be consumed

Let our spirits twirl in weightlessness

Soar

entwined

to depths

unknown

Love

till we are so drunk with it

Float

all the way home…

Atoms and Molecules
Category: Writing and Poetry

Atoms and Molecules

It starts with desire—

A desire born

out of ancient memories—

Deep impulses of life

where fantasies thrive

Erections of ideas

that know no bounds

How can I but succumb

to a love so deep?

In the Dark
Category: Writing and Poetry

In the Dark

Hello Friend

Remember that day at the office?

You showed up with a cut on your forehead

Almost in the center

Vertical jagged swath

Bruised bluish exclamation

Newly scabbed crimson

You said it happened in the dark of night

Walking a route you knew so well

You could navigate with your eyes closed

No warning

Head collided with sharp edge!

Half-open bathroom door

You made us laugh

Accepted our sympathies with a self-conscious grin

~

I extend my arms in front of me

Fingers seeking smooth table's edge

Back of chair

Slick door frame

In darkness

I may not be facing where I want to go

Even when my body tells me I am

No such thing as sure familiarity

I stop

Trace invisible space about me

Fondly remember you

Before I take my next step

Reach
Category: Writing and Poetry

Reach

Who am I kidding?

This world will not know peace in my lifetime

or in lifetimes to come.

This world is fortunate to just survive

so some future generation may continue

to dream of peace.

How many millions of Kalashnikovs

are traveling around the globe now?

Many more outstretched

arms ready

to embrace them.

Multitudes protesting in the streets—

eyes shooting anger,

screaming for someone's head,

thirsty for other people's blood—

What are the chances of them finding

enlightenment

anytime soon?

Shadowy characters bombarding us

with malware, spyware, and viruses.

Heartless schemers targeting our vulnerabilities.

Laying their traps to snare the most trusting.

Drug wars, terror wars, civil wars

and cold wars.

War on crime, war on poverty, war on disease.

We keep inventing more.

Who am I kidding?

Certainly not the political prisoner

whose teeth are falling out

from too many electric shocks!

Not you.

Not me.

Not these deep-seated fears that keep telling us

a deathly illness is only a doctor's diagnosis away.

A mind that is here today

may be gone tomorrow!

Ecstatics speak of being intoxicated

after drinking from the cup of eternity.

I too have experienced that sweet elation,

and will, if lucky enough, partake again and again,

but who am I kidding?

Just look around.

Who knows what the plan was?

What the plan is?

If there is

one?!

Beholder

Beholder

I could frame

panoramic photographs

Zoom in

on fat-bellied stones

Glacier-straddled summits

                                      kissing sky

Silver-haired clouds whispering

                                      lazy gossip

                                                to each other

Slate-blue river casually rounding

                                                spruce-gathered

                                       bend

But this surround-sound—

          Water rushing rocks

          Leaves in mid-dance

          Branches moaning as they flex

This forest

          touching my skin

Filling me

          with its spirit

Would go missing

At least

with words...

This Poem Is Not Controversial
Category: Writing and Poetry

This Poem Is Not Controversial

it has no enemies

does not want to argue

defend one point

or attack another

this poem is at peace

it exists

past opposites

beyond contradictions

it has but love to offer

feels no need

to name

the nameless

between words

in the spaces around letters

this poem

shines

Suddenly
Category: Writing and Poetry

Suddenly

Your sighs touch me suddenly

          Kiss of a thousand violins

Deep in the folds of blue

This lonesome night I am in

I abandon alphabets

For the scent of your skin

Gather my scattered heart

          Shelter me under your wing

Flood me with your passion

Play me to the every end

Burn me till nothing is left

But ash of a thousand violins

Before the New Year (for Benazir)*
Category: Writing and Poetry

Before the New Year*

There was a time

when a flower had power

When we believed we lived

in the age of peace

There was a time

when the insanity of war no longer

made sense and awakening

was the new hymn

There was a time

when love was more than a silly love song

Rainbows and their pots of gold

were in our hearts

There is a time

where flowers still hold power

Visions of peace reign

and lovers' ghosts

                                      dance…
