Martyrs and Saints
Current mood: pensive
Since I have worked in animal rescue, I have come to realize that there are basically two types of people who volunteer (and this goes for any kind of volunteer work)...the martyrs and the saints. The martyrs are the ones who are always reminding you of all the "good" they do. Yes, they volunteer their time and do good things, but you question their motivations. Are they doing it for bragging rights? To convince themselves and others that they are of value and are good people? While I welcome anyone who does good, I can't help but be saddened by martyrs' motivations. Then, we have the saints. Those who work tirelessly and selflessly for no other reason than that they want to help. These are the people that could never pass an injured animal on the side of the raod and think that "someone else" will help. Those that help without being asked. The people that give of their time, money and love without ever expecting to get anything but a wet kiss and a nuzzle or opportunity to give a belly rub. I get frustrated by those who volunteer for any cause and feel the need to remind everyone just how hard they work and how selfless and righteous they are. I prefer the quiet angels that are silently walking among us, and there are so many of those.
