Recording Diary: Day 11 (Gang vocals!)

Yesterday was a quickie.  Casey and I, along with sainted volunteers Emiko, James, Jonah and Louis, recorded group vocals on "Colossal" and "Mouse on Fire," and they totally kicked ass.  We had one mic set up in the middle of the living room, and the room itself coated with blankets, curtains and sleeping bags to reduce sound reflection (sort of made it look like we were planning a different sort of group activity, but really it was good, wholesome vocal fun).  Everyone was here by 1:30, and by 2:30 or 3 we had the last verse of "Colossal" and all three choruses of "Mouse on Fire" in the bag (we tripled up on "Colossal," so it sounded like a mob of 18 - we just doubled "Mouse on Fire").

I'm really excited to get these songs mixed and in your earholes; I think they're going to sound great.  Thanks a million to my vocal volunteers!

Recording Diary: Day 10

OK, there's nothing really new or exciting to add, but I did want to be consistent and complete.  Last Sunday we came back to the vocals on "Colossal," and banged 'em out in a couple hours.  Now the only thing missing is the big ol' group vocals on "Colossal" and "Mouse on Fire," which we'll be doing soon.  Then mixing.  Then . . . the next 4 or so songs, which - as I've probably said before - I hope to finish a bit quicker.  2008 release?  Here's hopin'.

Recording Diary: Day 9

Saturday, March 20th: More vocals!

On Saturday, I got back in the closet, and Casey and I came back to "(God Is) Just Like Santa" - which I’d been practicing all week.  We started fresh, and did it up right.  We did a handful of takes, comped ’em together into one convincing whole, and then even added some sweet falsetto harmonies!  These are, I think, pretty similar to the harmonies on the original (which is on my myspace player right now); Casey said they sound like Dinosaur Jr.  I’ll take that.  Anyway, this version of the song is somewhat different from the version I recorded last February - not the least difference being that the vocals will sound much better, I promise.  Casey is not letting me be a slacker on the vocals, which I really appreciate.

After a very satisfying couple hours, we started in on "Colossal," the last of these songs to need vocals, which I thought would be a breeze, since I’ve been playing/singing this song for a few years now.  Turns out that all this time I thought I’d just been singing a song I wrote, I’ve actually been getting into some very bad, lazy vocal habits, and I seem to have a really hard time singing the chorus in tune.  Damn it!  I blame it on the fact that the first note is a weird one (a major 7th, if you must know), and I can’t seem to wrap my brain around it when it counts - I know, I wrote it, it shouldn’t be that hard, but there you have it.

So after several takes, with some good parts, but with bad parts in all the same places, we called it a day, and realized too late that we had learned an important lesson:  We should not even try to record vocals on two songs in one day, as we keep ending up bailing on the second song and starting fresh another day and doing it way better . . . only to go on from that victory and try recording another song.  Fie!

Anyway, next week we will start and finish "Colossal," and then we will be more or less done with these songs - except for maybe some gang vocals on a few songs (if you’re reading this and you live in Seattle and sing, then you should come over and help out).

And now, for your enjoyment, here are some shots of our high-tech in-closet vocal recording booth:

This is what it would have looked like if I were singing with the closet door open - which, of course, would have defeated the purpose.

It gets lonely and dark in the closet, so I brought a camera.  More like that:

Thanks for tuning in and reading these ramblings of mine.  I swear, as soon as I have a real finished mixed song to share with the world, you, my loyal blog readers, will be the first to hear it!

Quiet music for listening

Lately I’ve been thinking that - as much as there is to love about the Seattle music scene, and as glad I am that I live and play and listen to music here and not in my home town of Boston - there is something missing.  Sometimes I want to play (or attend) shows of quiet, acoustic artists at a place where people will sit and listen to them, and it can be very challenging.  House shows are great, but you can’t really promote them the way you’d like, and some people feel weird going to them.  Most of the other venues are bars that generally host loud music, so quieter acts tend to either get drowned out by drunken conversation or cranked up in order to compete with said conversation.  Some towns have venues that are knows as being "listening rooms," where people go and sit and listen.  As a performer and fan of quieter, acoustic-based music, this appeals to me.

As I said, this particular conundrum has been in my mind of late.  As it so happens, the wonderful people at McLeod Residence are opening their fabulous gallery/bar/center for intellectual and social stimulation to the public right about now, and seem to be quite open to trying out new ideas.  I bounced my ruminations off them, wondering if McLeod could be used for a series of quiet, thoughtful shows, and they said "Yes!  Let’s do it!" - and so just like that, in a couple of weeks we will be embarking on a monthly series of quiet shows meant for sitting (or standing, I suppose) and listening.  But with drinking and stuff, too.

Softly Now: quiet music for listening
First Wednesdays at McLeod Residence
Starting April 2nd, 2008, with performances by:
Moe Provencher (Pelusa)
Levi Fuller
TroubleShooting (Casey Alexander of Wesafari)
8:00 / 21+ / Free

I hope you can make it out, and if you’re interested in playing, just drop me a line.  Thanks!
