Winning a second Bram Stoker
Current mood: blissful
Category: Writing and Poetry

Gerard and I were in Salt Lake City, Utah, to attend WHC08 March 27 through March 30. We were on several panels. It was wonderful to see old friends and make new ones.

BEING FULL OF LIGHT, INSUBSTANTIAL won the Bram Stoker Award for superior achievement in poetry.

There was a tie in the poetry category with VECTORS: A WEEK IN THE DEATH OF A PLANET by Charlee Jacob & Marge Simon (Dark Regions Press). They are both awesome poets and I love their work so I was delighted to share the stage with them.

For the offical press release of all winners, see [http://www.horror.org/news-2007stokerwinners.htm].

I’m so joyful and happy that my book received the Stoker. This book was such a wonderful gift from God and the universe.

HUGE thanks to Brian Addison for his amazing cover and interior art/photography & Terry Bradshaw for her graceful layout design.

Also, thankful for all the Light in my life that allowed me to be open to this book:

-Circles In the Hair, my writers group

-my family and friends

-Gerard, my husband.

The Making of BEING FULL OF LIGHT, INSUBSTANTIAL
Category: Writing and Poetry

How did I end up with 100 poems, most of them new in my third collection? I woke up January 1, 2007 and felt that the new collection needed to have 100 poems in it.

That thought sounded pretty crazy in my head, but it wouldn't go away.

Step back a few months. Sept 2006 I decided to write a poem a day. That practice apparently led to the crazy plan on Jan 1 2007.

(more to come)

365 poems Sept 2006 to 2007
Category: Writing and Poetry

I'm working on my third poetry collection and felt I wasn't making enough headway so I set a BIG goal-a poem a day for a year.

I've done this kind of exercise for 30 days, but a year is another thing.

And here I am at day 45, with 45 poems.

I haven't done much reading back but I did look at a few and I'm happy with what I see. Of course, not every poem is good, but I'm feeling one out of every five is workable--with some rewriting.

I haven't thought how to share the results here. Hmmmmm.

Turning 54
Category: Life

So my birthday is coming and I'm going to be 54! I like the number because there are 9 children in my family (I'm the oldest) and 5+4=9.

On the other hand I'm a little freaked out cuz my Mom's having serious memory issues and she's not that old. Its a disease called MCI. So I'm feeling a bit vunerable. In my clearest moments I have no reason to believe I'll have the same problem, but in the moments as I wake, that time before I'm completely awake I start calculating time.

Like in 6 years I'll be 60, in 16 I'll be 70, like that.

Today I had that weird math matching through my head, but feel better after doing some exercises, walking for about an hour and some tai chi.

sigh

Maintenance. It's all about maintenance now.

In most of my better waking moments I feel pretty good. The genes in my family run strong. So I've been lucky to look and feel younger than my years on this planet.

It's funny how I remember very clearly being 18 and it doesn't seem like it was that long ago -- then again I wouldn't want to be 18 again. I've learned so much on this journey so far, going back wouldn't be as much fun as being here Now and going forward will be.

Just have to watch out for those waking moments!
