LITS vs. Nickelback?
Current mood: amused

Lions in the Street Say, "Clowns!"

According to rumours circulating for the last couple months, Chad Kroeger's* label 604 Records planned to release an album by fine local rockers Lions in the Street on October 30. Ostensibly entitled The Years, it would have been the debut full length by the fourpiece, but with one small caveat; the band wanted nothing to do with it.

Actually, that's a really big fucking caveat, isn't it?

"It's not representative," explained Lions vocalistguitarist Chris Kinnon, in a call to The Nerve in early October "It's old news."

The whole ugly scenario began when the band hooked up with 604 in 2003. The full-length was recorded in L.A. in 2005 under the band's former name, the Years (geddit?). If things had gone according to script, the album would have been released by 604 in Canada and TVT Records in the US. Instead, plans to mix the record were scuppered. Kinnon cited disagreements and complications brought on by the two labels as the cause, claiming, "The fact is, they didn't let us finish the record, or drop us. We were hung out to dry."

The band decided to move on, renaming itself Lions in the Street, and hiring lawyer Don Engel to inform TVT that the existing contract was "breached and not enforceable," according to Kinnon. An identical message was given to 604 by the band itself. Nonetheless, 604 unilaterally decided to fuck Lions over yet again by ignoring the band's legal position, and allegedly pursuing its intent to release the album with that oddly familiar and some might say outwardly provocative title.

"There's no huge buzz that they're going to capitalize on," Kinnon told The Nerve. "At every opportunity, they've gone out of their way, either through neglect or malice, to make our lives difficult."

Kinnon then speculated that the unsanctioned release was an attempt to coerce the band into working with 604 again, a move that he described as "mean and despicable," adding, "how can you go back? Never let the same dog bite you twice."

604 Records was unavailable for comment at the time.

Now, it seems that 604 has decided to not release The Years after all. As of press time, the label still refuses to comment on the situation, though a call to Kinnon provided a little clarification. "Maybe they never intended to do it, ever. It was just a ruse."

And why would 604 bother doing that?

"Because they're clowns," offers Kinnon.

So, to recap: 604 Records is like a psychotic exgirlfriend. But with a bigger lawyer than you.

Lions In The Street/The Years?
Category: Music

Hey y'all, here's what's going on with LITS:

* We posted two new downloads on the website, and we're preparing to make a great rock and roll record.

* Here's a link to a Chartattack.com article about our label situation:

http://www.chartattack.com/damn/2007/09/2105.cfm

Basically, 604 Records/Universal Canada and TVT Records (so 604 claims) are releasing a record we made over two years ago for them, as The Years, on October 30th, without our sanction or support.  They wouldn't let us finish, mix, or release the record at the time, when we wanted them to.  But now after we've built things up on our own, they plan to release the record not as The Years but as Lions In The Street, even though these songs are not representative of Lions In The Street.

For what it's worth, we've found the record online.

20 Questions: Lions In The Street

LITS interview with Dan Mummert at Rodeo Fans Only:

1.         Whats new and exciting with Lions In The Street?

Our free Cat Got Your Tongue EP was just unleashed and were happily pimping it.  Taking care of business, and working overtime.

2.         How did everyone meet/the band get together?

Two guys met in the same house, because theyre brothers. One guy later came along from a hockey game, and the Italian we found working in a kiosk at a farmers market selling home made wine and sausages.

3.         Where did you come up with the name Lions In The Street?

A friend suggested it, when we were talking about The Lions as a possible band name.  Just liked the sound of it.  Lots of people ask if we got it from the Doors, but we didnt even know about the line in their song or poem or whatever until after we had the name.  Someone else told us its an expression from Hebrew Scriptures, about fear and laziness

4.         Whos the craziest person in the group? The calmest?

Craziest = drummer; Calmest = Bass.

5.         What bands first got you interested in music and when did you know it was for you?

70s rock in the old mans collection.  Earliest memories include dad blaring rock and roll on the turntable.

6.         If you werent playing music, what do you think youd be doing?

Full-time hockey fan, working a jackhammer, marrying rich, bartender.

7.         A lot of times, joining a band and pursuing a career in music isnt always welcomed with open arms by friends and family, especially when roadblocks occur, how have your friends and family supported these decisions?

Champions each and every one of them.

9.         Do you have any favorite covers that you play on tour?

JJ Cale: Call Me The Breeze.  Chuck Berry: Sweet Little Rock and Roller.

11.       What is your favorite drink?

Boilermaker, or whiskey and water, or just beer.  Wine is good too.

12.       Youve played with a lot of big name bands, Jet, Kings of Leon and The Zutons to name a few, whos someone you would really like to play with but havent yet?

Tom Petty Neil Young Black Crowes

13.       What have you learned or taken away from bands like these that have helped with your music/careers?

Learned that as soon as you think its going to get easy, youll be faced with more challenges than you ever expectedthis aint an easy road to go down.

14.       What do you want fans to come away with from your music or from one of your shows?

A smile, ringing ears, and the desire to tell their friends theyve found a rock and roll band.

15.       Whats on your iPod right now?

5 Guys Walk Into A Bar Faces Box.

16.       If you could only listen to one CD for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Every Picture Tells a Story, or LZ I.  Oops, thats two.

17.       Are there any major differences between the music scene in Canada vs. America

It feels like you have to make it big outside of Canada before Canadians pay attention to you.  Not really much of a scene up here cause the cities are so far away from each other.

18.       You had signed on with a major US label and this ended badly before your debut was even finished, how has this experience affected the band and its direction?

Now were more determined to make it work and less willing to give control over to others.

19.       You guys recorded Cat Got Your Tongue (your debut EP) yourselves, who is a producer you would really like to work with?

Ethan Johns, George Drakoulias.

20.       In the face of adversity, L.I.T.S. has looked determined and fearless, is there anything that scares this band?

7 string guitars and 5 string basses give us nightmares!  Suge Knight is kinda scary too.
