I know you’re gone, you said you’re gone, but I can still feel you here...

All things must come to pass.

Since our immensely-unfashionable car came into our lives in 2002, Josh and I have enjoyed some truly wacky adventures.  The four-wheeled contraption has taken us to faraway lands for sun-soaked, rollicking good times that have left an indelible mark on our existence.  For this we pay our respects.

For the breaking down and thousands of dollars we have injected into keeping it alive, we offer no appreciation or gratitude.  The vehicle enjoyed a distinguished list of breakdown locations including Nambour near the Big Pineapple, the Mount Morgan ranges, Capalaba, Sunnybank, Manly Esplanade and several more I have erased from my memory.

But it has now enjoyed stranding us in the middle of nowhere for the last time.  On a recent trip to a mechanic we were informed the car is beyond salvage and the best thing we can do for everyone involved is have it towed to a wrecking yard. Dust to dust.

For those who travelled in the Mitsubishi Magna station wagon, a special place has been created for you to leave your words of remembrance... it's called the comments link below.  And I solemnly request you cast a reflective eye over the visual history of our beloved car below and share in my poignant (yet also strangely detached and apathetic) parting sorrow.

And I say, "Spinderella are you with me?"

Before you get the 411 on some of the most exciting news I have ever had to share on this blog, visit this past entry to see just how terrible my fortune-telling skills are.

How things can change in a few years.  Salt-n-Pepa are on TV screens around the world with a VH1 reality program, Pepa has an autobiography out called Let's Talk About Pep and Spin hosts a radio show called The Backspin.  These women are back in a big way and even more unbelievably, they are heading my way to play some concerts!  This is phenomenal news and there hasn't been an emoticon invented that can accurately describe my immense joy.

I saw the band play in Brisbane during 1994 and truly thought it would never happen again.  Now I have an email in my inbox stating I own 2 general admission tickets for the Sydney gig!  I can't stop looking at the tour poster or Pep's new nose in the photos below.  Deliriously happy...

So I bide my time with philosophical questions...

Cast your thoughts back. Back to the late 90s. If you were even a little bit cool, you would have been listening to the Imani Coppola pop-masterpiece Legend of a Cowgirl from her debut album, Chupacabra.

I lived and breathed this album. It formed part of the soundtrack to my life around the time I left Australia and moved to the UK. The mix tape I would listen to as I slaved away punching in data for British Gas Manchester contained Imani gems such as I'm a Tree, One of These Days and Pigeon Penelope. My grey, northern experience was considerably brightened when Imani toured the UK. On a quiet Mancunian night, I slid into an underground, inner-city venue and witnessed one of the most joyous live experiences of my life.

Imani was all crazy wigs and violin frenzy. She spent a bulk of the show strolling through the crowd as she performed. The small (but devoted) crowd lapped up every second.

During the years following this tour, Imani perfected the art of walking the well-beaten path taken by music industry outsiders. The Coppola section of my music collection is stuffed with independent releases showcasing an extraordinary artist finding her musical voice in a mostly indifferent world. Some tracks Imani even recorded in her Brooklyn bathroom.

So what now?

Imani fans rejoice. Ms Coppola is back in the form of Little Jackie, the genre-crossing duo made up of her and Adam Pallin. This project is getting some mainstream recognition and the first single, The World Should Revolve Around Me, has even been used as a theme song for a new television show. The album The Stoop is beyond dreamy... a mix of irresistible hooks and Imani's unique take on the world around her.

Watch the cool video below (note the unexpected Rosie Perez cameo) and buy the album soon. You know you can trust my tastes...

Save the mural. Save the world...

I posted a few blogs back about a documentary screening I attended that was centered around the great Keith Haring.  Keith was a pop art leader who blurred the lines between art and commerce.

Keith rose through the ranks of the East Village art and dance club crowd during the early 8os and his contemporaries included Madonna, Tony Shafrazi, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol.

During his lifetime, Keith travelled extensively to many countries to paint and helped raise awareness of issues ranging from drug abuse to child welfare.  One of his journeys even found him painting a mural on the Berlin Wall.

Over the years I have read many references to a mural Keith painted on the wall of a public school in Melbourne.  His official website lists this as the Collingwood Technical School.  On my recent trip to Melbourne I was determined to track the artwork down.

On a grey Melbourne afternoon, Josh and I made our way to the inner-city suburb of Collingwood.  We soon discovered the old Technical School has been boardered up and made to give way to the North Melbourne Institute of Technology one single block away.  We strolled around the old buildings that were gloomy and mysterious.  Each step brought me closer to what I thought would be eventual disappointment.  The old school is terribly run down and I just couldn't imagine the mural, supposedly the largest Haring mural outside the USA, would still be intact.

After 20 minutes or so, I was beat and ready to catch the train to the airport for our return to Brisbane.  Josh insisted we try one more block.  I love Josh.  Following are my photos of the 1984 Keith Haring mural in Collingwood, Melbourne, Australia.

Keith Haring mural Melbourne

For any interested parties, the mural is on the outside of a building located in Johnston Street, Collingwood.

Additional note:
I have been scouring all source to discover the eventual fate of this mural.  I have just recently heard from Heritage Victoria that the artwork has only this year been listed as historically and culturally relevant.  It is now heritage-listed.  This by no means secures its longevity and I am incredibly keen to campaign for the restoration and garanteed protection of the mural.  I'll keep you posted.

Additional note 2:
Josh was visiting his cousin in Port Melbourne when he stumbled across the van in the following pictures.  Nothing too special about the vehicle apart from the fact it has Keith Haring designs on both sides.  I would be incredibly interested to hear from anyone who knows anything about this van.

That's your art lesson for today.  Now you can skip back on over to PerezHilton.com and find out the latest on the Brangelina twins.

Writing’s on the wall...

Following on from my previous blog, here is the second installment of my Melbourne blog trilogy.

I like art.  And if it is in the form of low-brow scribblings on the rear of a toilet cubicle door, then all the better.

Here is a short collection of visuals that caught my attention during my stay in Melbourne...

Eat to the beat...

Melbourne is a strange city.  If you are able to stem the flow of hatred you might feel for being stuck in Australia, it is possible to imagine you are in a European city.

Chilly, wind-swept streets showcasing cluttered cafes and vendors roasting chestnuts.  Trams trundling past cobble-lined alleyways. A grey sky seemingly sitting only metres above the buildings.  The town has character.

I was recently in town for a week attending the Queer Collaborations conference - an annual convergence of queer university students from all over the country.  This post is one of a chain that will highlight some of the experiences I enjoyed in Melbourne.  Art, graffiti and, of course, too much vegan food.  What a fab place to begin my reflection...

This one’s for the children...

Dreams do come true.

I know I exude a super-cool, hip-to-the-latest and downright select vibe when it comes to music.  My iTunes folder on the Powerbook is bursting with fab tunes by awesome performers.

Taking all of this into consideration, the following should come as no surprise then:

This is a photo of me a short while after 3am this morning.  I set my alarm for 2:45am, fired up the Mac and frantically pressed the refresh arrow until I had secured a 12th row ticket to see New Kids on the Block perform live at the Staples Center in Los Angeles during November.

Don't bother hatin'.  I know I'm the winner.  Me and Joey Joe.  And Jordan K.

the sound of our voices made us forget everything...

Thank the non-existent lord I have talented friends.

My dear pal Mel left behind the swirling dust and bone-crushing isolation of Alice Springs for a short sabbatical as she tours the more populated locales of our sunburnt and racist land.

This trip included a whirlwind pitstop consisting of roughly 20 hours in Brisbane where she played the opening support (as Jane Woody) for Kimya Dawson, took in a drag show at the Sportsman Hotel, slept at our apartment and ate a hot vegan breakfast.  Then she boarded a plane for Melbourne.

Thanks for the fab 20 hours Mel.  We should do it again sometime.  When does the next moderately-successful, anti-folk pop singer come to town?

We don’t want any more bears...

Brisbane Pride month is in full swing in this sleepy little town I call home.

Saturday found me rallying, marching and being proud alongside a few thousand queer and queer-friendly allies.

See a collection of photos below.  The highlight must surely be the Raelian display equating the Pope with the Evil Emperor.  Now that's something to be proud of!

I don’t know much about art, but...

I like people who read my blog.  I like them so much, I am going to give them some valuable advice.

There is a new Jane Woody CD available to buy.  Jane Woody is my friend Mel.  Mel is super cool.  Mel was one half of the queer supergroup White Ice.  Mel was also in I Heart Hiroshima.  Mel is a high school teacher in Alice Springs.  Mel is opening for Kimya Dawson here in Brisbane during June.  Buy her CD.  Visit her MySpace page. Go here and listen to a song called Gwen Stefani.  It is by Josh and it is about Mel. Look at her below.

And while you are checking out my hot tips for fabulously-crafted art, watch this documentary:

I just attended a screening of this film at the Brisbane Queer Film Festival and was more than bowled over.  I have always had an immense love and respect for Keith's art and outlook and this doco cemented it.  There are some classic moments in The Universe... including an interview with Yoko Ono and rare footage of Madonna performing Dress You Up at a party for Keith in 1984.  Please see this film for a unique insight into a phenomenal and influential talent whose art has infiltrated modern life on many levels.  Also, check out Haring.com and the brilliant Haringkids.com to learn more about this incredible person.

So, get artsy in a hurry and check out the above. You can thank me later.

I wanna go to Portland...

There is something so super cool and loveable about Portland.... not that I've been there. Yet.

This city is always held up as a haven for free-thinking, progressive and compassionate individuals.  There is a mini mall that is completely vegan (tattoo, bakery, clothes, etc) and what was once a pirate-themed, vegan pub that is now a vegan strip club???!!!

Now the city just got even more desirable for me.  Portland is the largest city in the USA to elect an openly gay person as mayor.  This post is just a weak excuse to post pictures of possibly the cutest politician who has ever existed.  Please post below if you have seen a more attractive public servant.

Winter coming. Winter push on...

My largest mistake heading into this prac placement period of my degree was swearing not to drink for the four weeks I am in the school.  Two weeks in and I am gasping for a drink.  Not in a 'total lush' kind of way, but more as a tonic to calm the nerves after dealing with the shrill cries of small adults and the ineffectual mutterings of not-very-interesting-at-all big adults.

Saturday evening has rolled around and brought with it a delightful thunderstorm complete with driving rain and shimmering lightning.  Josh enjoys the drama of a good storm and delights in switching off the electricity and unplugging appliances from the wall... and yes, I would be sorry if the PC was destroyed by a lightning strike and I hadn't heeded his warnings.

As the storm trundled over the top of our dwelling along with the trucks on the bridge, I crept around the gloomily illuminated rooms documenting the posters and photos on my walls.  The half-light made me see them in a new way.

Following is a collection entitled Faces in a Storm.  I am keen for anybody who visits this page to name as many of the pictures as they can (regular visitors to my apartment should attempt to practice equity by opting out).  See what happens when you don't drink!!!  Sobriety is more frightening than a dark, ominous thunderhead anyday.

Subtropical depression...

Blogs not only require time and dedication to maintain, they require a certain level of inspiration.  My blog is more often than not an insight into my thoughts and what inspires (or more often the case, sickens) me.

Inspiration is threadbare on the ground in Brisbane.  My blog posts are frequently infrequent.

Here is a quick check list of what is happening in my world:

I am on a 4-week placement in a primary school (elementary for US friends and foes).  The school is disastrously non-diverse and insufferably middle class.  Beyond tedious.

Josh and I were forced to move from our rental apartment due to it being sold and we have relocated to a new place right under the Story Bridge in an inner-city suburb called Kangaroo Point.  Our apartment rattles whenever a large truck travels overhead.  I finally live like a troll.

My hatred for the racist breeding pool known as Brisbane has forced my hand with matters relating to my teaching degree.  I have been accepted by my university's study exchange program.  I will be studying overseas from January through May 2009 at an international school.  Where you ask?  Leeds University in the UK!  Simon, tell the New Penny I'm coming. Dee, how do I get a cheap coach to your town for drinking sessions/Morrissey worship?

And there you have it.  My first blog in too long.  Put your PJs on and grab a warm cup of something while you browse my latest collection of photos - the Brisbane River.  Bridges, paddle steamers and shipwrecks.  I am not liable for any injuries caused by viewers falling asleep at their PC/laptop/cell phone/palm device or alternative web browsing technology.

"I’m just not into politics"...

"Why does the queer space at QUT need to be so political?"

As queers, we have struggled far too long under the oppression of a hetero-normative society that uses divisive laws to keep us subjugated, demoralised, ashamed and vulnerable to emotional, political and physical attacks.

For me, to be queer and political means to resist and reshape these damaging forces and to exert control over my existence.

» I march to remember my queer comrades bashed or killed in violent attacks.

» I stand proudly shoulder-to-shoulder with other oppressed minorities to send a powerful and unwavering message to their oppressors - we all fight back together.

» I speak out in lectures and classrooms to silence queerphobic rhetoric and hate-filled speech.

» My ballot box actions demand response from elected officials  - afford to me (at the very least) the rights and privileges my straight-identifying siblings enjoy.

» And I celebrate, nurture and champion the need for the QUT Queer Space to remain a politically-charged safe space for all queer students - a space where they can (without fear or shame) socialise, politicise, organise and theorise.

Please think of the many people who fought ferociously and struggled against immense adversity for you to be able to enjoy these spaces.  Our safe queer spaces are not gifts or gestures of kindness - they are the fruits of victorious battles waged by extraordinary individuals.... individuals who banded together as queer political activists.

Always strength in solidarity.

JOHN ALLEN RUSSELL was found dead at the foot of a cliff near Tamarama in November 1989.

MICHAEL JOHN SWACZAK - Islington 1 January 1990. A report in the Sydney Morning Herald of 20 January 1990 stated that a New Year's Eve party organised by Newcastle's gay community and attended by about 500 men had become the focus of a murder investigation into the death of a local teenager, Michael Swaczak, 16. North Region Crime squad detectives have established that Michael, whose naked and badly decomposed body was found on the outskirts of Newcastle on Monday, was at the party at the Islington Bowling Club. Detective Sergeant Lance Chaffey said Michael was seen leaving with some men aged in their thirties about 3.30am on 1 January. His body, naked except for a wristwatch, was found in bushland about 300 metres off the Pacific Highway at Karuah, 50 kilometres from Islington.

RICHARD JOHNSON murdered in toilet block in Alexandria Park on 15 January 1990. A report in the Sydney Morning Herald of 5 February 1990 stated that six juveniles and two adults had been charged with the fatal bashing of a 33-year-old man in Alexandria Park last month. Police alleged that an 18-year-old man, whose name was suppressed from publication, had murdered Richard Norman Johnson, of Coogee, at the park on 24 January 1990. The prosecutor, Sergeant Brad Cropp, said a post-mortem examination and scientific tests had revealed that all regions of Mr Johnson's body had suffered severe assault. His body was found on a footpath near a public toilet block in the park, in the inner-city suburb of Waterloo. Three men were later jailed for his murder.

WAYNE TONKS, 35, a school teacher at Cleveland Street High School, was bashed and suffocated in his Artarmon home on 19 May 1990. A plastic bag had been tied over his head.

BRIAN TRAVERS, 56, bar-manager of the Latrobe RSL Club, murdered on 1 March 1992 by Damien John Roetz, 19. Roetz was found guilty of manslaughter by Chief Justice Green, who said: "I find that the accused's acts would otherwise have constituted murder, but the crime was reduced to manslaughter because the accused acted in response to provocation." But he said that while the law accepted that the provocation dismissed the murder charge, it did not excuse a homicide altogether. Roetz was sentenced to three years jail of which 18 months are suspended.

CYRIL OLSEN, 64, murdered in Rushcutters Bay Park on 22 August 1992

GORDON BRIAN TUCKEY, 22, murdered in (August?) 1993 on remote part of cycleway at East Woonona, Wollongong, by Thomas Albert Dunn, 19. You got the write stuff...

Hi all,

My queer department is putting together a magazine and we are looking for contributions from all over the world.  Please read the message below and if you would like to submit an article or piece, please contact me or email the address included below.

Love Sean xx

Querelle 08 – submission call out

'Querelle' is a French word that means 'noisy quarrel'. It's also an annual journal of queer politics, writing and art that usually embodies its name.

It comes each year to coincide with the queer student conference Queer Collaborations, and has been the work of many queer activists and student unions over the past decade. This year, the QUT Student Guild Queer Collective will be responsible for its production.

To go with the theme of this year's conference – freedoms are won, not given – we're putting the call out there for work that talks about the battles for those freedoms. Whether it's historic accounts of the fights we've already won, or the one's we're fighting, or the one's we should be fighting, or the way we should be thinking about all of it, we want to get it out there. We want arguments and theory and strategy and politics. We also want to showcase the personal battles we don't get to talk about anywhere else. We want art, photography, journalism, fiction and creative non-fic about the way we live our lives. The bad bits, the sad stories, and the good bits. And of course, the sex.

Don't feel restricted by this call out – even if you feel like your work might not be what we're looking for, at the end of the day, we're going to just publish the best stuff possible. And remember, there's no word limit, but we can't publish your novel.

We need to get the thing printed by June, so we need you to send us your submissions no later (yes really, no later) than May 1st, 2008. Send them to querelle08@gmail.com

For written submissions, please send them as a word document, double-spaced (unless it's poetry). For your art, it's most likely it'll end up black and white, so keep that in mind. We'd like it in 300DPI and in JPEG format.

Please, send us stuff.

Yours for our combined liberation,
The Querelle Editorial Team 2008
