Important Announcement!!! New Films showing at Village 8
Hey guys, we're now showing Young@Heart this Friday, and also doing a Sydney Pollack Retrospective, in memory of one of the greatest directors in Hollywood.
June 6th we will be opening "Tootsie" and "The Way We Were". These films are NOT part of the Louisville Exclusives, however we wanted to get the word out to everyone since this is a last-minute feature. These films will be showing every day at their respective times.
Here are the showtimes and synopsis information!
Young@Heart (PG) 12:30P 2:55P 5:15P 7:35P 9:55P
Young@Heart is a New England senior citizens chorus that has delighted audiences worldwide with their covers of songs by everyone from The Clash to Coldplay. Based in Northampton, Massachusetts, the group is made up of two dozen spirited seniors who specialize in reinterpreting rock, punk and R & B classics from a unique perspective. Their lineup includes former schoolteachers, executives, doctors and food service workers, and the chorus is guided by their longtime director Bob Cilman. With less than two months to go until a one night only concert in their hometown, the performers struggle with the new lyrics and unfamiliar melodies of seven new songs. During their thrice weekly rehearsals, they gradually take possession of music ranging from R&B classics like Allen Toussaint's "Yes We Can Can" to Coldplay's emotionally powerful ballad "Fix You," upending assumptions about old age, love, sex and death.
SHOWING ONE WEEK ONLY!
Tootsie (PG) 1982 12:35P 7:10P
Michael Dorsey (Dustin Hoffman), a brilliant but troublesome New York actor, has managed to alienate every producer on both coasts. Michael's agent George Fields (Sydney Pollack) can't even get his client a commercial since Michael complained that the tomato he was playing wasn't properly motivated. "You were a tomato!" screams George in desperation, adding that Michael is so obnoxious that he will probably never work again. Dorsey thinks otherwise; when he hears of an opening on a popular soap opera, he applies for the job--even though the job is for a woman. Posing as "Miss Dorothy Michaels," Michael wins the part and becomes a widely-known actress. Yet complications ensue when Michael falls for his co-star Julie (Jessica Lange, in an Oscar-winning performance) but, as Dorothy, is courted by Julie's widowed father (Charles Durning). Michael ultimately finds that his disguise as a woman has made him a better man. One of the classic comedies of the 1980s, Tootsie's gender-bending premise boasts a screenplay by Larry Gelbart and Murray Schisgal, and by a host of memorable supporting comic performances from Dabney Coleman, Teri Garr, George Gaynes, and Bill Murray. Future Oscar-winner Geena Davis makes her screen debut as a daytime drama queen, which indeed she had been before Tootsie came along. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
The Way We Were (PG-13) 1973 3:25P 9:35P
In 1937 spit-fire Katie Morosky briefly meets the preppy Hubbell Gardiner. Almost eight years later, the two are reunited in New York, when leftist radio worker Katie spies military officer Hubbell in a nightclub. The two opposites fall in love and head to Hollywood so that Hubbell can write a screenplay for producer pal J.J. But the House Committee on Un-American Activities' Communist witch hunt in 1947 tears the pair apart, as a pregnant Katie refuses to keep silent about the jailing of the Hollywood Ten, while a faithless Hubbell decides to save his career. When the two meet again in the 1960s, TV writer Hubbell and nuclear protestor Katie feel that old pull again, but they have to decide if they have what it takes for the long run.

Ah, the love of language! Any of you linguists out there speak Latin?
I found this by accident and thought it was funny so here you go... see if you can translate this:
Quantum materiae materietur marmota monax si marmota monax materiam possit materiari?
(no googling!) ;)

An epic drama re-creating the historic struggle surrounding the creation of the State of Israel in 1948. At the center of these events are two young, American friends--one Jewish, the other Arab. The film is told from the alternating viewpoints of the Jews, Arabs and Brits, all of whom collide in their fight for the control of Jerusalem, while bringing to the forefront themes of courage, terrorism, deprivation, politics and a strong sense of morality. Their involvement takes them from the streets of New York to The Holy Land, where they risk their lives--making incredible sacrifices along the way--to fight for what they believe in, as the city of their dreams teeters on the brink of destruction.

Friday, Feb. 22, 2008 - "Steep" (PG)
The story of big mountain skiing, a sport that barely existed 35 years ago. It started in the 1970s in the mountains above Chamonix, France, where skiers began to attempt ski descents so extreme that they appeared almost suicidal. Men like Anselme Baud and Patrick Vallencant were inspired by the challenge of skiing where no one thought to ski before. Now, two generations later, some of the world's greatest skiers pursue a sport where the prize is not winning, but simply experiencing the exhilaration of skiing and exploring big, wild, remote mountains. The man who is often described as the greatest big mountain skier of all, the late Doug Coombs who died in a skiing accident in La Grave, France, in April, 2006, is at the center of the story. His rich life and tragic death reveal the essential question at the heart of big mountain skiing: How does a skier weigh the risks versus the rewards of a sport where the possibility of dying is ever present? Also featured are many of the sport's greatest athletes including Bill Briggs, Stefano De Benedetti, Eric Pehota, Glen Plake, Shane McConkey, Seth Morrison, Chris Davenport, Ingrid Backstrom and Andrew McLean. |

Friday, Feb. 29, 2007 - "The Air I Breathe" (R)
A businessman bets his life on a horse race, a gangster sees the future, a pop star falls prey to a crime boss, and a doctor must save the love of his life. Based on an ancient Chinese proverb, these four overlapping stories dramatize the four emotional cornerstones | ..>..>

Recent goings on
Hey guys,
First off, I'm sorry for the lack of updates on movies and lack of flyers, we've had quite an interesting past few weeks.
I know we've kept on top of things for the past couple of months and that's still the plan. We just got a new film booker and still have to smooth out a few things, so please bear with us and please don't think that the lack of information is a sign of the LouEx program is going away because I promise that's not the case! That would make me sad.
Anyway, we've sent a list of films to try and get for February to the booker. Among these are Persepolis, Honeydripper, and Southland Tales, but no official word as of yet.
One film that we do have confirmed is "Steep" which is a documentary about big mountain skiing. It looks really good, so keep an eye out.
Also, for a shameless plug, I added a new music video for the song "Kerouac" by The Muckrakers to the bottom of the profile page. Thought you all might like it. This is a side-project James and I work on, and you can visit our website at pushforcheesefilms.com James directed the video and has a cameo in the scene where he buys a CD. I played the sound guy and "Nerd" character, you can't miss him... he's got glasses and a bowtie. Let me know what U think!
Hope you all had a great New Years!

Special Super-Awesome Announcement!
Hey guys, here's a pretty cool announcement for ya! James and I (Matt) talked to Stu Pollard the other day about the release of Ira & Abby on the 14th. For those of you who don't know who Stu Pollard is, he's a local independant filmmaker who's credits include "Nice Guys Sleep Alone" and "Keep Your Distance" among several others. You can see his full credits on IMDB. Anyway, Stu was the Associate Producer for Ira & Abby, and will be at the 7ish show hosting a Q & A after the film. We'd love to give him a packed house for this show, so make sure you come and see it. He will be doing some interviews on local media, so keep an eye out. I will let you know of the exact time the show starts as it may be a bit different from the normal schedule due to the Q & A session. Anyway, we thought you all would like something like this, so we hope you come and see the film and meet Stu, he's a pretty cool guy! Matt B. December Lineup Announced!!!
..> | Nov. 30, 2007 - What Would Jesus Buy No one has ever consumed as much as Americans today. And at no time do we consume more than at Christmastime. As the holiday shopping season grows longer, and the malls open earlier, we're losing something we may never get back. Performance Activist Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping are on a mission to Save Christmas from the Shopocalypse. Backed by his Gospel Choir, the Reverend travels coast to coast to address the shopping addictions which afflict us. The Church saves souls through parking lot revivals, cash register exorcisms, and more. |
| | Dec. 7, 2007 "For the Bible Tells Me So" (NR) Grounded by the stories of five conservative Christian families and explores how the religious right has used its interpretation of the Bible to support its agenda of stigmatizing the gay community and eroding the separation between church and state. |
| | Dec. 7, 2007 "Sleuth" (R) The updated story of a wealthy writer of detective stories, and an aspiring yet out-of-work actor who is having an affair with the writer''s exquisitely modernized Georgian manor, becomes the backdrop for a cat and mouse game that pits one creative mind against another. |
| | Dec. 14, 2007 - "Ira & Abby" (R) Ira Black, 33, is brilliant, neurotic, Jewish and has so many issues he can't fit them into 12 years of analysis. He can't finish his dissertation, he can't commit to his longtime girlfriend, and he's incapable of making a decision, even if it's just what to order at the diner. Abby Willoughby, 30, is a free spirit who's better at solving her friends' problems at the gym than selling memberships. When the two meet, the impossible happens: they fall in love, meet each other's parents and decide to get married, all in a few breathless hours. And life is good, until Ira finds out that Abby is a divorcee--two times over. Despite even more therapy, Ira can't help but feel that their marriage was built on a lie. They divorce quietly, while cracks grow wider in their parents' marriages. Ira's gorgeous analyst mother Arlene starts a secret liaison with Abby's charming voiceover artist father Michael, while Abby's mother Lynne wonders why she's no longer attractive to her husband and Ira's father Sy pretends not to notice. Ira soon realizes he's miserable without Abby. He asks her forgiveness and they marry again, this time making more realistic vows. But Ira's jealousy issues and Abby's free-floating tendencies lead him to reconnect with his ex-girlfriend. When Abby finds out about their parents' infidelities, the three couples converge for a group therapy with eight therapists. Ira and Abby ultimately realize that they were meant to be together. But divorced. Because marriage just isn't for them. |
| | Dec. 21, 2007 - "The Great World of Sound" (R) Martin answers an ad to train as a record producer, where he''s excited by the prospect of signing undiscovered artists. The company, called Great World of Sound, partners shy, unassuming Martin with the gregarious Clarence and sends them on the road, visiting southern towns where the company has placed newspaper ads, and turning motels into makeshift audition studios. Though an unlikely duo, they sign more acts than anyone else at the company. But when Martin takes a special interest in a young girl''s "New National Anthem," putting up his own money and following her progress, he discovers that something's miss with the enterprise. As things threaten to unravel, he''s forced to weigh his nagging conscience against both his loyalty to Clarence and his own financial ruin. |
| | Dec. 28, 2007 - "Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwritten" (NR) In the late 1970s and early 1980s the Clash revolutionized rock'n'roll and changed young people's attitudes forever. The Clash endure as icons, not just for their music but also as a band who stood for something above and beyond commercial success. The Clash front man, songwriter, human rock'n'roll dynamo and guiding spirit behind this unrivalled legacy is the late, great Joe Strummer, who with prophetic intensity is still changing people's attitudes all over the world. | ..>
