Leave a joke and win a book!
Category: Writing and Poetry

I'm looking for good bar jokes. To be a good bar joke, the joke has to be short. People in bars tend to be slightly drunk, and short jokes are easier to tell. A good bar joke has to be funny. Have a funny short joke tellable by slightly drunk people? Leave it as a comment. The funniest joke wins a free copy of SHE. Second funniest joke wins a new copy of Mary Janice Davidson's DEAD OVER HEELS.

What? You want to know how I'll judge the funniest? I'll get slightly drunk and tell all the jokes to my friends at the bar. The one that gets the most laughs wins. Easy.

Post away!

Comment and win!
Category: Writing and Poetry

Hi Everyone,

I'm giving away two advanced copies of SHE to random commenters at the Aphrodisia blog site: http://theaphrodisiaauthors.blogspot.com/

I'll pick the winner on Tuesday.

This is what they're saying about SHE at CoffeeTime Romance:
Wow! She is a page-turner galore! Ms. Betts has written her best story yet with this one. The world building is incredible and makes the story so real that you feel as though the characters could step off the pages and talk to you. I really loved the solid heart-centered characters, as well as the sizzling sex. I hope that Ms. Betts has more like this one planned in the future, because she now has a fan for life!

free books!
Category: Writing and Poetry

Kensington just shipped a box of my June release to me! I have 50 copies of SHE to give away. Want to win a copy? I'm giving them away in several ways. First, I'm giving one copy away to my June newsletter subscribees. To join, just click on the Yahoo button on my myspace page (http://www.myspace.com/lucindabetts) or on my website (www.lucindabetts.com). You could win at the end of the month.

Second, on the first Monday of every month at 9:00pm EST, the Aphrodisia authors have an on-line chat at Writerspace. You don't have to subscribe to join the chat. Just go to http://writerspace.com/chat/readers/ around 9:00 and join the fun. I give away books, and so do other Aphrodisia authors. It's a good way to ask published authors questions, hear about our new releases, wins some stuff and have fun. If you come to the chat, you get a chance to win SHE and other books.

Third, I post a blog on the 8th of every month at the Aphrodisia site. This month, I'll be giving away a copy of SHE to someone who comments. Check out the blog at http://theaphrodisiaauthors.blogspot.com/.

That's three books down, and forty seven to go!

Coffee Time Romance gave SHE a 5-cup rating. They loved it! This is what they said:
Wow! She is a page-turner galore! Ms. Betts has written her best story yet with this one. I was absolutely ecstatic that for once the man got to be the virgin, instead of the woman. So many romances have the woman being the virgin, and it was so refreshing to have it be the guy for a change. The world building is incredible and makes the story so real that you feel as though the characters could step off the pages and talk to you. The story line is very original; this is not your mother's fairytale and by the end of the book, you will find that you are very glad this is so. I really loved the solid heart-centered characters, as well as the sizzling sex. I hope that Ms. Betts has more like this one planned in the future, because she now has a fan for life!

Big Dorchester contest for unpublished writers
Category: Writing and Poetry

http://www.romantictimes.com/2008/04/american-title-v.php

Dorchester is currently accepting submissions so polish your manuscripts. To enter, send the first three chapters (no more than 50 pages), a two- to seven-page synopsis and a cover letter (aka query letter) to American Title Contest, Dorchester Publishing, 200 Madison Ave., Suite 2000, N.Y., NY 10016. ALL ENTRIES MUST BE RECEIVED BY JUNE 15, 2008.

For American Title V anything goes: historical, paranormal, time-travel, futuristic, romantic suspense, romantic urban fantasy. The only thing we're *not* looking for are straight contemporaries, young adult or women's fiction.

Your manuscript must be completed prior to entering and run between 80,000-90,000 words. Finalists must agree to participate in each of the five competition rounds and must submit copy for ALL five categories by August 15, 2008.

The winner will receive a publishing contract with Dorchester."

What does "unpublished" mean?

Any author whose work has not been printed as a book may enter the contest. For example:

• If you have been e-published, you're eligible.

• If you have had short stories or anything under 30,000 words appear in a magazine or anthology, you would still be eligible.

• If you wrote a 45,000-word story that was published in print as a stand-alone book, you are not eligible for this contest.

Samhain publishers looking for cowboy novellas!
Category: Writing and Poetry

Put on Tim McGraw's "Real Good Man", close your eyes and picture a
guy who wears jeans to work and who's real good with his hands, and
let your muse have her way. I'm looking for 3 novellas to fit into
Samhain's Cowboy Roundup Anthology. This anthology will consist of
three novellas to be released individually as eBooks in June 2009 and
combined into one print title in 2010.

I'm open to any romance genre but the stories must end with a HEA.
Submissions are open to all authors previously published with Samhain
as well as authors aspiring to publish with Samhain. Submissions must
be new material—previously published material will not be considered.
Additionally, we will not consider manuscripts previously submitted
whether individually or for past anthologies. Please be aware that
manuscripts submitted to this anthology cannot be resubmitted at a
later date unless by invitation from an editor.

To submit, please include the full manuscript of 24,000–30,000 words
with a 2–5 page synopsis. Also include a letter of introduction/query
letter if you are an author not previously contracted with Samhain.
Submissions are open until December 1, 2008, and the final decision
will be made by December 24, 2008. Submissions should be sent to
editor@samhainpublishing.com . Please put Cowboy Roundup Anthology
Submission in the subject line. If you receive an auto response, your
submission has been received. Anthologies are special projects exempt
to the general closing of submissions.

I'm happy to answer questions about this anthology either on the
Samhain Author loop, Samhain Café, or by private email at heidi at samhainpublishing dot com

Promo Opp for Published Authors
Category: Writing and Poetry

Greetings;

I am writing to you to let you know the Central Florida Romance Writers, a chapter of RWA, is in the process of planning our annual multi-author Romancing the Holidays signing to be held at the Altamonte Mall in the Orlando area. Last year, thanks to the donations of items for our goody bags, we were able to make 75 bags, which attracted several hundred people to the event. We raised more than $500 for the Adult Literacy League, which operates in the Central Florida area. The event, which boasted more than 20 authors signing their recent releases also got lots of press from the local media.

We are seeking donations of books, promo items and and raffle basket items. If you'd like to send us any of those items, please address your packages to me and if you'd drop me an email to let me know they are coming, I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks for your help,
Dara Edmondson

July 2008
Aphrodisia/Kensington Publishing Corp.
$12.95
304 Pages
Erotic Romance
Rating: 5 cups

Ivy is a beautiful young woman with long blonde hair who has magical powers and protects a sacred magical forest. She also happens to be a shape-shifting unicorn with the ability to heal, and who takes her responsibilities to the forest and her fellow magical beings very seriously.

Blaze Williams is a wizard and Ivy was his first and only true love. In addition he is a virgin, something unheard of for a man his age in the present day. However, as much as he loves Ivy, he has done his best to avoid temptation by staying away from her because he was taught that he would need all his power for a great task, and having sex with Ivy would drain some of that power.

On the eve of Blaze's father's death, he discovers the magical text, The Canticles of Al Farasakh is missing. With this book someone could create all sorts of evil. On top of it all, Blaze discovers that his father sold the land Ivy's forest stands on to an unscrupulous and dangerous man. With the book missing, and knowing that he cannot alone find it, Blaze contemplates asking Ivy to help him. In the meantime, there is an intruder to Ivy's forest, someone who has no respect for its creatures, and Ivy finds her cousin nearly dead from having her hide skinned and her horn cut off. Desperate to heal her cousin, but finding that she cannot do it alone, Ivy begins to search for a virgin with whom she can meld her power and heal her cousin. After a few tries later with less than satisfactory results she stumbles upon the man who left her, and his power is great. Will she ask him for his help despite the danger to her heart? Will Blaze risk the temptation to be with the woman he loves even though it means he may lose the very power he needs to defeat the darkness?

Wow! She is a page-turner galore! Ms. Betts has written her best story yet with this one. I was absolutely ecstatic that for once the man got to be the virgin, instead of the woman. So many romances have the woman being the virgin, and it was so refreshing to have it be the guy for a change.
