The Diva Next Door
The Diva Next Door
Sitting here in the middle
of the night, I cannot think
nor write about such things
as life or even death
because of the neighbors
fucking. I say fucking
because the bed springs
are squealing like loose
alternator belts and the headboard
is banging bass drum beats
through my thin apartment wall
like a typical B grade movie scene
where the neighbor can't get any sleep.
I think the sheetrock might burst
and then the entertainers show
their faces through the curtains
while still going at it. I've never been
so lonely as I compliment her,
"what a lovely voice you have."
At least, that's the way I imagine it
with my ear pressed against
the middle of the night.

Wavering Silk Sheets
Wavering Silk Sheets
the caressing winds rippling this wheat field we laze in tide us over while your breath on the back of my neck makes me shiver.

Cellular Divide
Cellular Divide
we were talking
about you
and the future
of our relationship
for hours
and then you
said something
about breaking up,
and the idea spread
through my brain
like a cancer.

A Short Outline
A Short Outline
I have noticed it is hard
not to mention time
within lines of poetry
outside the window
a sun or moon
shines or falls
in spring or fall
like a watch in sky,
and always I grow older
as my pen empties
thoughts of wisdom
I revise what I can,
never worrying for body
but the overall meaning
maybe something simple
trying so hard to get it right
but always there must be
that last line, solid
as an epitaph.

No More Cigarettes In The Bar
No More Cigarettes In The Bar
no more white ladies
curves dancing around me
in dim light.
no fading cherries
fiddled with fingers
in the shadows.
"I'm packing baby,
give me a light?"
no, none of that.
nothing to tell her
where I was
last night.

The Smoke Still Dancing
The Smoke Still Dancing
sifting through her ashes he thought about one last taste of her cherry lipstick.

On The Shoulder
On The Shoulder
flying ninety down
the highway
drifting over a bridge
i take a deep breath
smell the flowing
river below
and watch one more
sunset in the rearview mirror
love in the passenger seat
with my youth
fuel vapors exhausted

Breakfast in Bed
Breakfast in Bed
our night shed skin
peels slow from slumber
sensation, risen fruit
awakens your blue irises
through an open window
a warm breeze from the west
with my hand through your hair
and the sweet aftertaste
of orange juice from my lips
to yours

Able God at War
Able God at War
If my child were a bomb
I'd drop little adam
before evening
sunset, a wildfire
cancer, destroying
everything known.
A burning flesh releasing
shards of shrapnel
through thick skulls,
like ink
