I'll never be one of those sleek, adrenaline-pumped people in a commercial for high-tech sneakers or sports drinks, grimacing in steely determination with a toe poised on the edge of a starting line, grabbing life by the humid balls one steep mountain-bike path at a time, sweating electrolyte-blue droplets with glorious abandon.

Impossible. Because I hate exercise.

But maybe, just maybe, I've found a wisp of hope.  What's going to save me from a sedentary early death sentence?

Ode to Home Depot

Home Depot, how madly I love you

The cool kiss of air as I enter your embrace

Fills me with bliss, and I inhale

Pausing, pulling breath in one slow, satiny ribbon

Through my nose and into my lungs, satisfied

Seduced

Rewarded with your soothing perfume of pine, ozone,

   sweet flower seedlings in damp earth

Who knew retail could center me so?

Your unconditional love buoys me

You never doubt what I can do

And you inflame my mind

I could muse with you for hours upon hours

Ideas are such romance

And when I reach out and touch you,

I feel your passion passing into my hands

And I pull those hands back and look at them, pink and unpampered

Not yet gnarled or aged, but practical hands

And I love them

For all they do and do well

And you are my partner in so many little dreams

I will withstand the splinters

And make no bones about fingernails broken and cross-hatched by

   extra-rough sandpaper, or

      speckled patches of stubborn white paint in my palm, still there

         when I return to Monday's work of paper and pixels

Because with you I am at once

Quickened with passion and slowed

   to a sure and luxuriant pace.

How'd you like to have a walk-on part in my book proposal?

I'm gathering feedback and quotes about my writing.  So if you have anything to say (helpful, that is -- that will help me get published, see...) feel free to send me an e-mail and praise away.  Seriously, don't worry about embarrassing me.  I can handle it.
