Why Highway 61 Revisited is the Best Album Ever
Current mood: Bob Dylan.
Category: Bob Dylan. Music
Highway 61 Revisited is the best album ever. There is plenty of competition for such a prestigious title, of course. Marquee Moon by Television, Emergency & I by the Dismemberment Plan, and many others all are revolutionary and amazing in their own right. Highway 61 walks off with the title for one reason and one reason only. This Album Is Perfect. There is not a wasted note, not a single second of any song that could be improved to make it any better. This album just does every single thing right.
What I look for in albums: Incredible lyrics, and here there are an abundance; Well-written songs, songs with plenty of hooks, performances with attitude, strong vocal parts, et al., and that's what this album is. Not only is this album timeless, but it also manages to be inseparable from the time it was released. It works as both historical document and riveting listen. Had this album not come along when it did, it probably wouldn't be as good as it is. It has such an immediacy to it, and that could be what makes it timeless.
No filler, just nine of the best songs Bob Dylan ever wrote. The man was and still is a visionary, and this album can never be topped.
But Manitobe Hooper will still try.
