Three Milagros
Category: Writing and Poetry

For my heart
For my insight
For my manhood

For the moments when I am asked to relinquish these things
For the moments when avarice and fear threaten to overwhelm
For the moments when I must walk alone

For my heart
For my insight
For my manhood

For the moments when I must make myself sturdy
For the moments when I must eschew certain reward
For the moments when I must accept danger

For my heart
For my insight
For my manhood

For the moments when three pieces of greening brass
And the faith of an old love must count above all else.

praises
Category: Writing and Poetry

you never would let me sing your praises
I would not know what to do with that
I do not understand what such things mean
a compliment does not make sense to me

I see nothing I feel nothing I'm empty
floating and it scares me to be liked
and yet I persisted in seeing you
for who you are and loving you as is

and saying a thing or two about you
with careful calibration so as not
to overload your cart with praise toxic
in its effusive and loving truth

dammed was the flow of love I felt for you
and the sluices through which I could express
narrow greened and yearning to throw open
to restore to fertile ground the flood plain

above the false scar-made restrictive banks
and quietly I let the water rise
brimming now and falling sometimes topping
and trickling across the brown soil

to seeping spots soft open and aware
able to accept having been seen in light
and the possibility of delight
in relishing now a small water song

flowing from the eyes of one who sees you
and marvels at the beauty you give this world.

If Tears Were Dollars and Others
Category: Music

Spent a bit of time late last summer writing
and recording blues tunes. Hope you
enjoy the lyrics to these four.

m

Sad and Wide

Love comes sometimes and you don't know why
Love comes sometimes and you don't know why
You can't stoke that flame, sometimes it just burn and die

I seen this girl on the corner eyes so sad and wide
I seen this girl on the corner eyes so sad and wide
Tears was strollin' and you know inside her lovin' just died

Sometimes you sit and wonder and it don't do you no good at all
Sometimes you sit and wonder and it don't do you no good at all
Too much drinkin' oh man it's worse than a chain and ball.

Open your eyes now what do you see
Open your eyes now whatever do you see
It's a breakin' heart and mounds of misery.

Marc Zegans, August 2008

Have You Ever

Have you ever wondered? Have you ever wondered who you are?
Have you ever wondered? Have you ever wondered who you are?
Are you just some damn fool? Or the guy drivin' that big black car?

Have you ever wondered, wondered where you be?
Have you ever wondered (darlin'), wondered where you be?
Are you in a sweet scented garden or rolling in a gutter in misery?

Have you ever wondered, on the day you arrive
Have you ever wondered, on the day you arrive
Will it be at the pearly gates of heaven,
or just finding out what it mean to be alive?

Now I know maybe one thing or two.
Now I know maybe one thing or two
But it took a whole lot of livin' to find out exactly what to do.

Have you ever seen a young girl cry
Have you ever seen a young girl cry
Her broken tears fallin' from her bright blue eyes

What makes her sorry, I don't think I'll ever know
What makes her sorry, I don't think I'll ever know
But a whole lotta livin' gonna happen before she'll ever let go

Have you ever wondered why some people smile through the pain
Have you ever wondered why some people smile through the pain
Oh they just keep getting stronger with shit make another man go insane.

Now I'm gonna stop wonderin' and start livin' for a while.
Now I'm gonnna stop wonderin' and start livin' for a while.
Too much thinkin', too much thinkin' baby,
Oh you know it gonna break you child.

Marc Zegans, August 2008

If Tears Were Dollars

(Moans)

Some times you sit and cry for hours at a time
Some times you sit and cry for hours at a time
If tears were dollars you'd be a millionaire by this time.

I wish I knew what was making you so blue
I wish I knew what was making you so blue
Pretty darlin' oh, oh it make me wonder
is there anything ever I could ever do

I'm gonna go walkin' maybe out in the rain
I'm gonna go walkin' baby in the rain.
Where god's tears are fallin'
he's just out there joining you again

Cloudy skies on a moonless night
Cloudy skies on a moonless night
When something's wrong with my baby
Oh my world just ain't right

So let me rock you, let me rock you till the break of dawn
Oh baby let me rock you till the break, till the break of dawn
Need a whole lot of lovin' if ever we're gonna heal that wrong.

Marc Zegans, August 2008

When It's Gone

Ba ba ba ba ba baby what you been doin' tonight
Ba ba ba ba ba baby what you been doin' tonight
I'm so lonely I ain't feelin' right

Na na na na na now darlin' what's goin' on with you
Na na na na na now darlin' what's goin' on with you
I ain't seen you for so long I don't know what to do

Oh woman why do you treat me this way
Oh woman why do you treat me this way
Aw you got evil in them eyes All you want is my pay

When I'm workin' darlin' you're always hanging round
You know when I'm workin' you're always hanging round
But when the money's gone darlin' I think you live in another town.

I said oh oh oh oh oh baby who you hangin' with tonight
I said oh oh oh oh oh oh baby who you hangin' with tonight
There's somethin' in you Aw I know you ain't gonna treat right

So oh baby Time I let you go
So oh oh oh oh oh baby Time I let you go
Don't want what you giving so you gonna hit the road

Yeah

trimming

sometimes the break of ice burdened limbs
cracks like gunshots across these stark woods
the fall of branch and twig silent until
snow muffled impact sounds an end to growth

the limbs summer and fall have been dropping
silent to the ground an unseen ice storm
weighing them beyond what can be bourn
a blockage of flow unnatural in warmer

months or perhaps a reminder that loss
imported fruit de-stems regardless
of season displacing expectation
the better to achieve its cutting shock

the limbs summer and fall have been dropping
there is nothing I can do except watch
them fall away and wonder at the speed
of the trimming that leaves nothing but core

weeping unable now to be silent

Unclasped
Category: Writing and Poetry

At Steep Ravine I took you into surf
your fear breaking faster than the hard waves
spit and sparkle, lips, teeth, lids and brown hair
bouncing as you jumped in the shore breaks

waves rising, dancing round your thighs, foaming.
I took your hand in the hollow between
two curls and led you to deeper waters.
You looked back to shore, scanning for your boy

A thin line of love tethering you to shore.
You would not go beyond the second break.
The line, a kite string too long, would be cut
if you ducked with me into the black swell.

Your arm extended, holding me, fingers
unclasping slowly, at last releasing
as I turned my young back to your kind face
diving into the cold quiet beneath.

The Day

You had taken what no mother

should lose

And came to impossible

acceptance

Treading steady on your sturdy

short legs

Crying and wailing at some turns

too much

Announcing with precision

a firm no

Stanching there a draining of heart

and breath

That would have ended you, taken

the light

From your crinkled flash blue eyes

that dance

Over memories surrendered

to winded

waves turning small on northern lake

and deeper

waters, darkening, enfolding

silent.

The day of your son's wedding

approaches

And you return to the place

of last no

Jittered and angry and fearful

with love

For the infinite you, alive

in song

And for the son you let run free

quilting

As he made a good path outside

your reach

But not, your heart.

Big Blues for Living
Category: Music

No Use

What's the use of dyin' when you ain't lived at all
What's the use of dying when you ain't lived at all
That's 'bout as foolish as trying to walk 'fore you can crawl.

What's this use in quittin 'fore you begun to fight
What's the use in quittin' 'fore you begun to fight
Turnin' tail and runnin' lord knows that ain't right

Cry yourself a river, but don't give no ground
You may cry yourself a river, but don't give no ground
Tears 'll wash away 'fore the final trumpet sounds.

I looked evil in the eye, she spat back at me
I looked evil in the eye, she spat back at me
She thought she could blind me 'cause I's in misery

Now I've been cut so many times my skin ain't growin' back
I've been cut so many times my skin ain't growin back
Ain't no railroad goin' down that cold and lonesome track

Cold hearted woman crumpled up inside
Cold hearted woman crumpled up inside
Filled with lies and hatred till her heart just died.

Don't have to go over 'count a what you already lost
Well you don't have to go over 'count a what you already lost
Cuttin' off tomorrow that's a foolish cost.

So what's the use in dyin' when you ain't lived at all
What's the use in dyin' when you ain't lived at all
That's 'bout as useless as tryin' to walk 'fore you can crawl.

Pillow Talk

"A provocative and delightful book...a marvel."

~ Kelvy Bird

A collaboration between artist Gabrielle Senza and poet Marc Zegans, Pillow Talk explores the human comedy through erotic haiku and graphite images drawn with sensitivity and light. Senza and Zegans' work unfolds as a conversation between form and text playing out across the pages of a pillow book, an intimate set of musings on eros expressed in raucous, tender, vulnerable human form. Speaking different languages, male and female, line and word, sound and shape, Zegans and Senza turn in to each other, gently, allowing life to find its balance in the shared, quiet moments of pillow talk.
