Some may have said she was a mistake For planning was not in the story Difficult the road may have been Full of stumbles and falls But no she was never a mistake Unplanned she became my glory For with her birth did my joy begin Captured by one so very small My love was so great it could make me ache Though we were never the conventional story She made me love life again So is life when your child calls This blessing I will not call a mistake
"Remark the cat which flattens itself in the gutter, Slips out its tongue And devours a morsel of rancid butter." Languidly she looks around the room sadly noting the clutter The book in her lap she has been furtively trying to read The cat reminds her that she has again forgotten to feed Self talk and self incriminations ringing through her mind She finally gets up and opens up the dusty wooden blind The sun shines in and suddenly she notices the shine Of the ring on her finger, remembers the taste of the wine The song that was playing when he placed it on her hand All of the years have slipped away like grains of sand She forces herself to make a pot of coffee Opens a window for the apartment smells musty Then she sees the box, on a shelf by the door Funny she had not noticed it in the days before She opens the note and sees his writing Her hands are visibly shaking "My love I must go ahead of you soon But have left you this to hold while you watch the moon" Tender words that held special meaning Lines they had used when they were dreaming She opened the box to find a small silver goblet That was on a fine silver chain Inscribed upon the goblet With you my heart will always remain
Her mirrored reflections dance In his deliberate glance The champagne flutes sparkle And her eyes twinkle Candlelight flickers between them And on the rose red as a gem The music floats around like smoke He knows now is the time to go for broke So while looking passionately in her eyes He pulls out the box containing his surprise He holds his breath as she opens the box Knowing it is not the largest of rocks But the delight shows as she gasps Her tears flow showing she did grasp The meaning of this diamond ring He feels his heart sing
