My name is Maya
Current mood: funky

My name is Prince and I am funky
My name is Prince the one and only
I did not come 2 funk around
'Tll I get your daughter I won't leave this town
In the beginning God made the sea
But on the 7th day he made me
He was tryin' to rest y'all when He heard the sound
Sound like a guitar cold gettin' down
I tried to bust a high note, but I bust a string
My God was worried 'til he heard me sing

My name is Prince and I am funky
My name is Prince the one and only - hurt me

(Do that, do that, somebody)
(Do that, do that, somebody)
Hurt me (Do that, do that, somebody)
(Do that, do that, somebody)
(Do that, do that, somebody)
(Do that, do that, somebody)
(Do that, do that, somebody)
(Do that, do that, somebody)

My name is Prince and I am funky
When it come to funk I am a junky
I know from righteous I know from sin
I got 2 sides and they both friends
Don't try 2 clock 'em, they're much too fast
If u try to stop 'em they kick that ass
Without a pistol, without a gun
When u hear my music you'll be havin' fun
That's when I gottcha that's when u mine
To tell the truth, tell me what's my line?

My name is Prince and I am funky (You can't stop Prince)
My name is Prince the one and only - hurt me (You can't stop Prince)

(Do that, do that, somebody)
(Do that, do that, somebody)
(Do that, do that, somebody)
Funky fresh 4 the 90's (Do that, do that, somebody) (Prince)

My name is Prince, I don't wanna be king
Cuz I've seen the top and it's just a dream
Big cars and women and fancy clothes
Will save your face but it won't save your soul
I'm here to tell you that there's a better way
Would our Lord be happy if He came 2 day?
I ain't sayin' I'm better, no better than u
But if u want 2 play with me, u better learn the rules

My name is Prince and I am funky (You can't stop Prince)
My name is Prince the one and only (You can't stop Prince)
I did not come 2 funk around (You can't stop Prince)
'Till I get your daughter I won't leave this town
I won't leave this town
I won't leave this town
I won't leave this - leave this - leave this

My name is Prince and I am funky (You can't stop Prince)
My name is Prince the one and only (You can't stop Prince)
Funky fresh 4 the 90's (Do that, do that, somebody)
(Do that, do that, somebody)
(Do that, do that, somebody)
Hurt me (Do that, do that, some....)

The funkier I be
The funkier I get, oh shit
Lickety split on the lyric
A new jack in the pulpit
Watch it deacon, your track is leakin'
What is this u're seekin'?
The syncopated rhymes are at their peak
When you jumped on my D.I.C.K.
That's the one thing that I don't play
The jock strap was 2 big 4 u anyway
U're just a simpleton
I'll bust u like a pimple, son
My star is 2 bright
Boy, I'll sink u like the ship Poseidon Adventure
U're bumpin' dentures 2 be cocksure
There must be more coming from
your mouth than manure.
So with a flow and a spray, I say hey
U must become a prince before u're king anyway

(Do that, do that somebody)
(Do that, do that somebody)

It's time I get ig-nig-nig-nig-nig-nig-n-ignorant
Def be the beat that I'm rockin'
Yo so, come get a hit
And put your thinking cap on
U've been forewarned
I call upon the inner forces that I've got brewin'
In my cauldron. That means my nugget...
Sometimes I'm rugged
The style I posses be havin'
The other brothers buggin' and this is 4 those who oppose
And propose 2 overexpose disclose
Pose a threat 2 my brother
Like any other man makin' a stand
I'll be damned if I let u play this hand
I'm the blackjack dealer and the cards are stacked
What do u expect 2 win when u're used to playing craps?

(Do that, do that somebody)
Hell yeah, let's get this under the hmm...
(Do that, do that somebody)

"Damn." It's gettin' tricky
I mean it's a sticky situation
2 resurrect a groove with feeling
And give it this much affection
Passion flows and who knows
What lurks in the gallows of my mind
I put my foot in the ass of Jim Crow
12 inches of non-stop sole
I'm on a roll with P, and it's time for the show
So do that, do that somebody
Wave your hands in the air
This is a motherfucking party
While u're laying back I'm on the attack paddywhack
Give yourself a bone
This is my house and I'm prone
2 layin' some chrome upside some motherfuckers dome
And I'm out...

My name is Prince and I am funky
My name is Prince the one and only

My name is Prince
My name is Prince
My name is Prince
My name is Prince
My name is Prince
My name is Prince
My name is Prince
My name is Prince
My name is Prince

My name is Prince

Teatro Vision, House on Mango Street and LM3
Current mood: enthralled

Noticias de ultima hora! LM3 will be working with Teatro Visión! San JO here we come!! -m

La Casa en Mango Street / The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros adapted by Amy Ludwig from Translations by Elena Poniatowska, Directed by Wilma Bonet, October 16 - November 2, 2008

* Teatro Familias Unidas at Domingo De Teatro, October 19- Our first Sunday performance of La Casa en Mango Street, our free Domingo de Teatro, will feature a post- show performance from Teatro Familias Unidas, a local Teatro group of mujeres and madres from east San José. The piece, Somos Mujeres, Somos Vida, is a collectively-developed play that tells their personal and ancestral stories, highlighting both their struggles and strengths as immigrant women.

Las Manas Tres at Teatro Visión- Our second weekend will feature a writing and performance workshop for young women inspired by the texts of Sandra Cisneros and presented by the fierce hybrid performance troupe Las Manas Tres. This trio of east bay mujeres (Maya Chinchilla, Milta Ortiz and Cruz Grimaldo) will engage participants in creative writing and theater exercises as they address issues of gender, identity, and social justice. Open to women aged 11-25, no experience necessary and the only requirement is desire. More details soon, please contact Carlos Velázquez if you are interested in participating!

Other events and guests will be announced soon, including information on Dia De Los Muertos Events and Halloween festivities. We hope you can take advantage of these special events that are a perfect complement to La Casa en Mango Street.

The Woman Who Fell From the Sky / La Mujer Que Cayó del Cielo by Victor Hugo Rascón Banda- January 22 - February 8, 2009

* Elisa Marina Alvarado Directing- We are happy to announce that Teatro Visión Artistic Director Elisa Marina Alvarado will be directing this bold look at cultural insensitivity on both sides of the border. Elisa returns to the stage as director, having just directed our last play, Hero, as well as the 2006 production of La Víctima and the World Premiere of Boxcar/El Vagon (2004).

More news will be announced soon, including the cast and partnerships and discussions with local social service and indigenous groups to add to the experience.

Water & Power by Richard Montoya of Culture Clash March 12-29, 2009

* Herbert Siguenza Directing- Although Culture Clash will not be starring in this production, their presence will be prominent with Clashero Herbert Siguenza signed on to direct. Herbert is a founding member of the critically acclaimed performance trio, and along with members Richard Montoya and Ric Salinas, Culture Clash has written more than a dozen hit plays including A Bowl of Beings, Radio Mambo, Bordertown, Mission Magic Mystery Tour, Nuyorican Stories, Anthems and most recently Zorro in Hell.
* Opening Weekend with Culture Clash- If Herbert is not enough for your Culture Clash fix, then be sure to attend our opening weekend, March 12-15, 2009, which will feature a talkback with Water & Power playwright Richard Montoya as well as all three members of Culture Clash as our special guests for Opening Night on March 14. Culture Clash is also celebrating their 25th anniversary this year, and the Opening will be an opportunity for Teatro Visión audiences to congratulate them for their work as we prepare for our own 25-year celebration in May.

As with The Woman Who Fell From the Sky, there are some special news on the cast of Water & Power that we hope to announce in the next Mitote. The play, which won the L.A Drama Critics' award for outstanding new play, will soon become a feature film that is expected to premiere at the 2009 Sundance Festival in January.

Paradox
Current mood: electric

Last night was electric! even though I was hunched over the porcelain throne most of the day (food poisoning? nerves? flu?) I was able to pull it together and the cast was just at their best! And can I just tell you now how much I love you, dear audience? Thank you thank you for such honest and fearless feedback! What would I do without you? except put on shows for my family at the holidays and I'm not sure they're ready for this hybrid-ness...but you are. I know you are! so come on down tonight and tomorrow and tell a friend. Hell tell a frenemy. Don't miss it. Can't wait for tonight! So excited to see this paradox come all together. M

BART Interspersed: From Bart Trains to La Peña Terrains. For the past
two months, La Peña's theater troupe has been commandeering BART
trains
and performing skits about love, compassion and balance to unsuspecting
BART passengers. If you are one of those fortunate commuters caught by
surprise by these fearless performers, this is your chance to enjoy
them
full-blown on their other habitat, La Peña stage.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Celebrating its 33rd Anniversary La Peña's Hybrid
& Experimental Performance Ensemble presents
PARADOX
Directed by Marc David Pinate
June 17, 18, 19, 2008; 8pm
At La Peña, 3105 Shattuck Ave. Berkeley. 510-849-2568

Combining movement, video, text, live music & guerrilla theatre,
PARADOX
presents a journey into the collective unconscious. An original work of
metaphysical musings that explores the power of performance to heal the
spirit. PARADOX is both story and non-story, theatre and non-theatre,
teaching and non-teaching, being and non-being. It is the space beyond
the logical or rational where opposites coexist and simultaneous truths
converge. All is (n)One.

Directed by La Peña resident artist, Marc David Pinate PARADOX
represents the culmination of a year and a half of experiments with
movement, guerrilla theatre and innovative ways of presenting text.
June's workshop presentation of PARADOX will feature hybrid performance
pieces which incorporate movement, spoken word, video and live music.
This type of hybrid performance is inspired by the previous work Pinate
has done with well known Bay Area choreographers Ericka Chong Schuck
and
Sara Shelton Mann. Interspersed within the live performances are video
segments which show highlights of the troupe's guerrilla theatre
actions
on BART trains. For the past two months, La Peña's Hybrid and
Experimental Performance Ensemble has been boarding BART trains and
performing short skits about love, compassion and balance to
unsuspecting BART passengers.

"I have to give a lot of credit to La Peña Cultural Center for having
the courage and foresight to fund and present this kind of experimental
work," said Pinate. "We have a very talented group of fearless
performers with significant previous experience before coming on board
with this project. I am excited to unveil this new work to Bay Area
audiences." The three performances of PARADOX, June 17-19, are part of
an open creation process that lets audience members give feed back and
ask questions at the end of each show. Audience feedback will be taken
into account as the show continues to evolve towards its final version.
