Teatro Vision, House on Mango Street and LM3
Current mood: enthralled
Noticias de ultima hora! LM3 will be working with Teatro Visión! San JO here we come!! -m
La Casa en Mango Street / The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros adapted by Amy Ludwig from Translations by Elena Poniatowska, Directed by Wilma Bonet, October 16 - November 2, 2008
* Teatro Familias Unidas at Domingo De Teatro, October 19- Our first Sunday performance of La Casa en Mango Street, our free Domingo de Teatro, will feature a post- show performance from Teatro Familias Unidas, a local Teatro group of mujeres and madres from east San José. The piece, Somos Mujeres, Somos Vida, is a collectively-developed play that tells their personal and ancestral stories, highlighting both their struggles and strengths as immigrant women.
Las Manas Tres at Teatro Visión- Our second weekend will feature a writing and performance workshop for young women inspired by the texts of Sandra Cisneros and presented by the fierce hybrid performance troupe Las Manas Tres. This trio of east bay mujeres (Maya Chinchilla, Milta Ortiz and Cruz Grimaldo) will engage participants in creative writing and theater exercises as they address issues of gender, identity, and social justice. Open to women aged 11-25, no experience necessary and the only requirement is desire. More details soon, please contact Carlos Velázquez if you are interested in participating!
Other events and guests will be announced soon, including information on Dia De Los Muertos Events and Halloween festivities. We hope you can take advantage of these special events that are a perfect complement to La Casa en Mango Street.
The Woman Who Fell From the Sky / La Mujer Que Cayó del Cielo by Victor Hugo Rascón Banda- January 22 - February 8, 2009
* Elisa Marina Alvarado Directing- We are happy to announce that Teatro Visión Artistic Director Elisa Marina Alvarado will be directing this bold look at cultural insensitivity on both sides of the border. Elisa returns to the stage as director, having just directed our last play, Hero, as well as the 2006 production of La Víctima and the World Premiere of Boxcar/El Vagon (2004).
More news will be announced soon, including the cast and partnerships and discussions with local social service and indigenous groups to add to the experience.
Water & Power by Richard Montoya of Culture Clash March 12-29, 2009
* Herbert Siguenza Directing- Although Culture Clash will not be starring in this production, their presence will be prominent with Clashero Herbert Siguenza signed on to direct. Herbert is a founding member of the critically acclaimed performance trio, and along with members Richard Montoya and Ric Salinas, Culture Clash has written more than a dozen hit plays including A Bowl of Beings, Radio Mambo, Bordertown, Mission Magic Mystery Tour, Nuyorican Stories, Anthems and most recently Zorro in Hell. * Opening Weekend with Culture Clash- If Herbert is not enough for your Culture Clash fix, then be sure to attend our opening weekend, March 12-15, 2009, which will feature a talkback with Water & Power playwright Richard Montoya as well as all three members of Culture Clash as our special guests for Opening Night on March 14. Culture Clash is also celebrating their 25th anniversary this year, and the Opening will be an opportunity for Teatro Visión audiences to congratulate them for their work as we prepare for our own 25-year celebration in May.
As with The Woman Who Fell From the Sky, there are some special news on the cast of Water & Power that we hope to announce in the next Mitote. The play, which won the L.A Drama Critics' award for outstanding new play, will soon become a feature film that is expected to premiere at the 2009 Sundance Festival in January.

BART Interspersed: From Bart Trains to La Peña Terrains. For the past two months, La Peña's theater troupe has been commandeering BART trains and performing skits about love, compassion and balance to unsuspecting BART passengers. If you are one of those fortunate commuters caught by surprise by these fearless performers, this is your chance to enjoy them full-blown on their other habitat, La Peña stage.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Celebrating its 33rd Anniversary La Peña's Hybrid & Experimental Performance Ensemble presents PARADOX Directed by Marc David Pinate June 17, 18, 19, 2008; 8pm At La Peña, 3105 Shattuck Ave. Berkeley. 510-849-2568
Combining movement, video, text, live music & guerrilla theatre, PARADOX presents a journey into the collective unconscious. An original work of metaphysical musings that explores the power of performance to heal the spirit. PARADOX is both story and non-story, theatre and non-theatre, teaching and non-teaching, being and non-being. It is the space beyond the logical or rational where opposites coexist and simultaneous truths converge. All is (n)One.
Directed by La Peña resident artist, Marc David Pinate PARADOX represents the culmination of a year and a half of experiments with movement, guerrilla theatre and innovative ways of presenting text. June's workshop presentation of PARADOX will feature hybrid performance pieces which incorporate movement, spoken word, video and live music. This type of hybrid performance is inspired by the previous work Pinate has done with well known Bay Area choreographers Ericka Chong Schuck and Sara Shelton Mann. Interspersed within the live performances are video segments which show highlights of the troupe's guerrilla theatre actions on BART trains. For the past two months, La Peña's Hybrid and Experimental Performance Ensemble has been boarding BART trains and performing short skits about love, compassion and balance to unsuspecting BART passengers.
"I have to give a lot of credit to La Peña Cultural Center for having the courage and foresight to fund and present this kind of experimental work," said Pinate. "We have a very talented group of fearless performers with significant previous experience before coming on board with this project. I am excited to unveil this new work to Bay Area audiences." The three performances of PARADOX, June 17-19, are part of an open creation process that lets audience members give feed back and ask questions at the end of each show. Audience feedback will be taken into account as the show continues to evolve towards its final version.
