BLOG: What happened to Earth Day?
Current mood: inspired
"Sometimes you have to act as if acting will make a difference..." -Michael Pollan, a contributing writer for the New York Times, and author of "In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto."
Where was I? What happened to Earth Day? I didn't see anything about it. It was supposed to be in the park here on Saturday. I went there; took the dog. They must have cleaned up all ready. It was weird and lonely; there was a deflated bouncy pen for children on the lawn. All saggy and depressed. No one was around.
I went home.
But then, today I saw this great article by Michael Pollan. A few friends, my mom, they were all talking about it. I thought I should check it out. I tell you, it was one of the most inspiring Earth-Day related pieces I've read. It's a bit long if one is running short on time, but as usual, I got distracted from the things I "ought to do" and opted for some "ought not to do while working".
No one was home here, and I read it aloud to myself to fill up the space and make my little birds chirp back at me.
I got quite involved at moments and startled the poor dears a few times when my voice rose to a dramatic bellow. But commanding the attention of my feathered audience, I read on - about 4 pages. And then it was done and I looked up. They, the birds, just preened and picked at seeds as if I had contributed nothing more than a little white noise in an empty house and not a beautifully recited and constructive masterpiece by an established author.
Perhaps you'll have a better audience, either way, it's a good read, especially if you're looking for some inspiration: "Why Bother" by Michael Pollan.
Cheers, megan

Blog :: So here I am in Texas with the TV on
It's buzzing in the background. Keeps it feeling cheery in here... all except for the sound of aggressive screaming, gun shots, and commercials telling me what to get for Easter... (What? what? It's not even Thanksgiving yet.)
I'm in Texas. Come and say hi!

Show :: SF Songwriting Coalition
Category: Music
...It might be the next best thing since sliced bread...
Hey yous!
Local musicians of San Francisco have come together to form a coalition: San Francisco Songwriters Coalition, to be exact...
Armed with the support of local lovers of music and two thumbs up from KFOG, the Coalition is bringing its debut show to the 12 Galaxies on Sat, September 1st.
Jeff Symonds and Jerry Becker, our good buddies (and the Coalition founders), along with nearly 30 song-writing bands from the Bay Area, have formed this amazing organization to support and promote an exciting local music scene for not only us artists, but also for our audiences.
We'll be joined September 1st by our friends the Joel Streeter Band, Ryan Auffenberg, and the SFSC All-Stars (which will be a bunch of rotating musicians from the Coalition.) At the end of the evening the All-Stars will play the Beatles' record Abby Road (each song sung by a different Coalition artist!)
Following opening night, SFSC will have a weekly Thursday residency at 12 Galaxies throughout the year. YEHAW! More details: SF Coalition.
Local music is alive!
P.S. Please add SF Coalition to your Myspace friends list!

Show :: August 9th in San Francisco w/Colin Hay
Category: Music
Hey yous!
I though I point out this show specifically to you because I am especially excited about it.
The band and I will be opening up for Colin Hay (of Men at Work). (Also you may recognise his work from the the movie, Garden State.) If you've never seen Mr. Hay live, then whoa there, stop what you're doing and get these tickets!
I actually went to see him in May at one of our favorite venues here in SF, The Red Devil Lounge. The show was incredible, and though I've always been a fan, that night was why I knew next time he came to town - I must open the show.
So here I am! I would love to see you there!

Blog :: So here I am...
Current mood: being
Category: being Music
So here I am, doing laundry in suburbia while I write about nothing... The fan swings wildly like it always does on its highest setting. Sometimes I wonder what would happen if it came loose from the ceiling. Would it grind, spinning its way down to the core of earth... Perhaps I could jump in after it for inspiration.
I work. Sometimes I think I mostly work. I love to work. Workoholism. So back to the grind stone I go. Just have to finish a verse here, an email there, make sure to send off those CDs, and oh, don't forget to record a scratch of the new song for the guys at rehearsal. This is a day for me.
But, as I'm sitting with my guitar against my leg, pushing myself back in my chair, hands on the keyboard of my trusty MacBook, I dream.
I dream about melodies and wheels turning on the roads of America, touring with my band, blasting Chris Cornell and Tenacious D as we sort through lines on a map and eat too much food from gas stations. And sometimes, just for fun, I dream of the new iPhone, which I shall never own due to the generous use of zeros on its price tag.
It's important to dream and I give myself permission to do so sometimes. And whether a dream is a look off into the future, or just a memory of imagination, it doesn't really mater to me.

Blog :: High Sierra Music Festival
Category: Music
I'm typing this poorly... My doggy is leaning on my arm, looking up into my eyes. Ah! So loving! so tolerant! of my every move around the house, following me. So forgiving when I croon loudly into the air, smashing my hands down onto the fret board of my guitar, "Awwooooh!"
The reason I write (though now my arm falls asleep) is just to say that I had such an awesome time at the High Sierra Music Festival last week! It was a good sign - that on our debut mini-tour as a band - we all got along swimmingly. Do I love this band, or do I love them!
Thanks to those who came out to Quincy, CA to support us, tents, outhouses, the HEAT and all.
Much love, megan

Blog :: Requiem
by Kurt Vonnegut
When the last living thing has died on account of us, how poetical it would be if Earth could say, in a voice floating up perhaps from the floor of the Grand Canyon,
"It is done."
People did not like it here.
