Thanks, Mom!
Current mood: disgusted
Category: News and Politics

The Republican National Committee's 2008 convention draft platform reads:

"We support abstinence education and oppose school-based clinics that provide referrals, counseling, and related services for abortion and contraception."

How far is too far? Do we sacrifice our children's well-being at the altar of misguided faith? Wasn't the lesson of Abraham and Isaac sufficient? (If you think ruining lives in this fashion is much different, I would argue otherwise.)

Faith, true faith, can be a wonderful and powerful force. True faith can change the world. The willful delusion borne of indoctrination is not faith. Willful ignorance is not faith. What good COMES of this?

Please realize that if you support a candidate, you support his party's platform. Voting in a system like ours can be pessimistically viewed as choosing the lesser evil, since you've got no line-item veto on your candidate's objectives.

Karaoke: My Baby Just Cares For Me
Category: Music

Little bit of noise in the background track, but eh, it's ambience.  A request, so blame the requestor! :-P

A poem: Made
Category: Writing and Poetry

This tumbled out almost fully formed, as my better poems seem to, my subconscious the better poet.

Made

Chew your boy slowly — it would NOT do
for him to stick in your throat.
Count!
You would to well to follow the prescribed count as you chew.
Do not fret if he's squeamish.  These doubts will pass,
he was bred to this purpose.

We warn that you make sure his feet are clad softly.
If a pulsing cadence is experienced, this should not cause alarm;
his training does not leave him in the gullet — he places one foot after another yet!

Our guidelines will lead you to satisfaction
or we guarantee your money back.

A Poem: Periwinkle
Category: Writing and Poetry

A tried (tired?) and true metaphor...

Periwinkle

The periwinkle reclines,
its petals, desert parched
perching delicately
upon these arid lips.

Languorously, fusion inundates poise,
whelming the bloom and its fulcrum,
vibrant blossom unfolding
succulent with dew.

A poem: Scraps
Current mood: exhausted
Category: Writing and Poetry

Scraps

The shackled wretch scrabbling beneath the barred door
clutches these scraps of dreams finger-painted in sweat and filth,
shreds them to prayers fervently whispered towards liberty.

Crossing the sill, moonlight's sudden cacophony
bears them plummeting to the cobbles, quivering trinkets,
feeble prey to the yowling cat,
tribute for his fickle, dallying lover.

Bad Poetry
Category: Writing and Poetry

Is it my vision?
Concurrent threads swim
in my mind's eye
memes weaving remes
striving for rhyme,
lyrical losses, insensate
soothsayers lacking sooth
but not saying, forsaken.

A bad joke, but just one I observed.
It gnaws at my belly like hunger.

Karaoke Blog 9: Desperado (Alice Cooper, NOT the Eagles)
Category: Music

Well, I have returned. This is one of my favorite songs probably of all time, and the FIRST karaoke blog I've posted of a song I sang more than a few days before doing a blog. I was pretty jazzed when I happened across it a few days ago, never figured I'd find a karaoke version. Backing track isn't the best, but it IS karaoke, what? Don, I hope this satisfies the 'classic rock' request? If not, there's a U2 song I was working on, but not sure it's what you had in mind....

A poem: Drip
Category: Writing and Poetry

I can stop that faucet from dripping, mostly,
gotta feel it, really, fingertips wrapped
around the shank, poised for pressure,
just a few degrees off center
where it's satisfied, racket minimal.

My sole companion in that room,
white white of economic proportions
except for the gold tracings
in the linoleum (we are of an age),
murmuring while I ponder literature,
waiting for the inevitable.

But still it drips,
disregarding my caress,
like a girl laying upstairs
in a room of economic proportions.

Questions -- Fire Away
Current mood: contemplative
Category: Quiz/Survey

Ok, seems everyone's doing it.

Ask me a question, and I'll do my best to answer in the spirit it's asked.

A caveat and a warning: unlike in any time in humanity's history, the idle thoughts, fears, musings we confess in forums such as these are prone to live virtually forever.
