Short on cash? There's no need to sacrifice fashion. The economy may be slowing while prices for food and gas are rising. In times like these, Melrose Vintage in Uptown Whittier can be someone's best friend. This little boutique, established in 1992, offers a variety of new and vintage styles at ultra-appealing prices.
There are high schools and colleges nearby, so the store is a perfect location for its target demographic: teens and juniors with limited funds.
Store manager Tatiana Pedroza has been displaying flowy, lightweight blouses and tunics in floral and bohemian prints for spring. Pair them with jeans or leggings, slip-on shoes or ballerina flats, and you have a chic and unique outfit.
Blouses and dresses range from $12.99 to $19.99. Men-style suit vests have become a staple in junior- size wardrobes. Worn simply over a T-shirt and jeans, vests add a touch of class to a casual outfit. Vests typically cost as much as $50 at department stores such as Nordstrom, while at Melrose Vintage, they range from $7 to $14.99. Members-only jackets in various colors, starting at $24.99, are a hot-ticket vintage item at the store for their novelty and comfort. The classic jacket is light enough for summer nights. Slip-on and tie-up canvas shoes, flats and heels start at $7, while vintage heels average $12.99.
The store carries an assortment of sunglasses, which are must-haves in Southern California, no matter what the season. Vintage replicas, wayfarer styles (a la Ferris Bueller), and big frames come in lots of colors and styles for $7.99. The store also carries accessories like blown-glass rings and long wooden necklaces starting at $1.99.
Owner Robert Ruiz attributes his low prices to finding what he calls "dead stock" - items that suppliers were not able to sell or put out on the market. Ruiz, a Whittier resident,recently bought knee-high striped tube socks reminiscent of the 1970s from a supplier no longer making or selling the old style. With the popularity of movies such as Will Ferrell's "Semi-Pro,"though, I wouldn't be surprised if these sell out fast. Ruiz also says he won't mark up vintage items because he considers it the truest form of recycling.
Kalie Crossland, 17, of La Mirada, was shopping the day I was there. She said she enjoys coming to the store regularly for the rings and big sunglasses. With only $15 or $20, she usually gets a few things. "It's good for my budget," said Crossland's shopping pal, Krystine Calderon, also of La Mirada. The 17-year-old said she's into the inexpensive retro styles the store carries.
Melrose Vintage was recently featured on TV in Fox News - L.A.'s Hot List.
So don't be afraid to buy some new spring fashions. It won't hurt. At least not your wallet.
