DeGrand Arteest Show at the ChatRoom puB
Current mood: vital
Category: Art and Photography

DeGrand Arteest show..

June 17th, 2008 .. --> by paul -->

A good friend one described cartooning as "the red headed step child of art." Elitists turn their head or raise their noses while a small population of us giggle and/or get inspired. Most comic artists are kinda self deprecating and draw panels about how unappreciated they are, and usually that's true. But I've seen that in the genre, the most honest and productive artists are producing some of the most emotionally hitting material, and sometimes you just don't know exactly what that is you are feeling. The two artists that make up the new show at the Chat Room Pub blend the lines of cartooning and fine art. There is a thought out humor that makes you smile yet feel uncomfortable at the same time. The first artist R. Thies ( pronounced ar-teest, ..get it?) resides in Denton, TX and attends school at TWU just for the humor in attending an all woman university. The second artist in the show is David DeGrand of Ft. worth. David has been drawing comics since he was a wee lad of a fifth grader ( he now currently holds a BFA from UTA.) Both artists exhibiting together present work that is outside of the panel of a comic strip and outside of what you would think of fine art. It's what R. Thies would call "cartoonism."

Fans of Gary Baseman, R. Crumb and Keith Haring will definitely find something to enjoy within this show. All works are for sale and will be up til the end of august. You can explore more by these artists at www.rthies.com and www.degrandland.com

Q CINEMA & METROGNOME COLLECTIVE PRESENT BABY DEE!

Q CINEMA & METROGNOME COLLECTIVE PRESENT BABY DEE!

Friday February 22, Doors at 8pm

Join us at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22 at Arts Fifth Avenue, 1628 Fifth Ave. at Allen Street for the dark blues and tipsy sing-alongs of eccentric chanteause Baby Dee. This collaboration with our good friends at the Metrognome Collective is shaping up to be a one-of-a-kind evening and one of the first (of hopefully many more to come) of our ventures into live performance. Doors open at 8 p.m. with the ambient sounds of DJ Marcosis, followed by opening act (and local heroes) The Theater Fire. Then Baby Dee and her band will take the stage. Chicago's Transmission says of Baby Dee, "Both her appearance and music are completely unclassifiable, the former falling somewhere between masculine and feminine, the latter a mixture of tender cabaret, guttural indie chanson and non-sequitur cackling comedy routine. The result was a wildy entertaining and assertively authentic performance that ended with the audience not wanting to go home, even after midnight on a cold work night in Chicago." She'll be performing material from her sensational new Drag City album Safe Inside the Day. For more on this incredible talent, pick up the February issue of Out magazine or listen in on her interview on NPR's Day to Day.

Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door and are available now.

Day of the Dead

Sorry everybody, due to several factors, including our venue falling through, we have decided to cancel the Day of the Dead show.

We will put something together for later in November, and try to do the carnival next year. We do have a couple of exciting community projects in the works, more details to follow.

Thanks for your patience and understanding!

James

Call for Artists, musicians, wizards, cultists, weirdos, etc

Metrognome is putting together an Art Carnival and Musical Sideshow for The Day Of the Dead, Friday November 2nd. We are looking for freaks, geeks, and others to entertain, amaze, and bewilder the thronging crowds.

Artists are invited to propose tent installations, or assist in decorating the outdoor festival site (TBA) in Fort Worth.

Bands will be performing inside, and wandering musicians, magicians, entertainers, will be invited to meander the midway.

If you sew, do make-up, or want to help us erect tents, we need carnies, the creepier the better.

If you are interested in participating, message or email me at james.watkins@metrognome.org.

If you know someone who eats lightbulbs, sleeps on a bed of nails, and/or breathes fire, send them our way.

(we also need fire barrels and a generator for the night!)

thanks!
James

Metrognome vs. Gallery Night

For Fort Worth Gallery Night, the not-for-profit artists co-op Metrognome Collective is thrilled to present three shows in three different venues around Fort Worth.

The Metrognome Peep's Show, a new show of art by Fort Worth artists: Mark Penland, Adam Werner, James Lassen, Jill Foley, Delaney Allen, Jesse Barnett, Christopher Blay, Nick Prendergast, Paul Leicht, and more.

At The Chat Room Pub on Magnolia, the prints of Andrew Kendall are on display. Andrew is a talented printmaker from north Texas, and his distinctive, gritty work, inspired by collecting trash, strikes an delicate balance between the worlds of pop and urban style street art. The art perfectly suits the eclectic crowd at the Fairmount neighborhood's Chat Room, and complements their fine selection of spirits.

Finally, as part of Arts Goggle, Metrognome artists will be displaying work at the amazing Spiral Diner, Fort Worth's only vegan restaurant.

The Peeps Show will be located in our temporary gallery space on the ground floor of the Lancaster Lofts building located at 1324 East Lancaster Ave. Fort Worth, Texas 76102. The show is being sponsored by Flora Brewer ofthe Lancaster Lofts to spread the word about the future home of  The Studios at Lancaster Lofts. The Studios will be newly constructed prestige artist's studios and a gallery, aimed at developing a new arts district just east of downtown Fort Worth. Intended to be the working home for ten carefully chosen fine and commercial artists, The Studios are a badly needed resource for the Fort Worth arts community.

The art show will be accompanied by an evening of live music starting at 7pm, including: Denton's Matthew and the Arrogant Sea, Brooke Opie from Grapevine, Fort Worth's own A Childlike Fear, and closing out the night, local music maharajah Marcus Lawyer, producer of Top Secret...Shhh, will be spinning some sweet wax melodies.

Metrognome's Peep's Show is September 8th, and the gallery will be open from 12pm to 12am. Admision is free.

Andrew Kendall's show will be on display through October 1st at the Chat Room Pub, 1263 W Magnolia Ave, Fort Worth.

The Fort Worth Arts Goggle is on Friday, September 7, from 5-10pm at various locations. The Spiral Diner and Bakery is at 1314 W Magnolia Ave , Fort Worth, TX

Volunteer Meeting

Our next volunteer meeting is scheduled for this Saturday June 2nd. We will be getting together at Dylan and I's new place on 5th Ave in Fairmount. The address is 2235 5th Ave, Fort Worth, Tx 76110. The meeting will last from 6pm to 8pm, and we will be discussing both the upcoming Benefit Art Auction, and our other fundraising efforts. If you are interested in getting involved, this is an excellent, low key way to meet other volunteers and find out the stuff that needs to be done. I have actually only received a couple of confirmations so far, so it may only be a few people. I will try to have cookies or something around for snacking.

After the meeting we will be heading to 1919 Hemphill for the hobo documentary "Who Is Bozo Texino?" and then back over to the chat room for some beverages.

If you need more information, call my cell 817.366.0866, because I will be mostly offline as part of the moving process.

Looking forward to seeing you all there!

Thanks!

Upcoming Benefit: Art Auction, July 14th

You might notice on the calendar on the right side of the www.metrognome.org page, we have scheduled a benefit art auction for July 14th at The Chat Room on Magnolia. We will be having a volunteers meeting on Saturday June 2 to plan. The meeting will be from 6-8pm somewhere in the Fairmount neighborhood. We will determine a location based on the number of you who are interested in attending.

Please let me know if you coming, or are interested in volunteering, even if you can't make the first meeting, and I will follow up with more details.

We are also looking for artists who would like to donate a work of art to be entered in our silent auction. It will have a minimum price set, and if the piece doesnt sell, we will be having another auction later in the summer. The theme we have chosen is Red, White, and Blue. So if you have something you would like us to show within that theme, please let me know. This auction is not limited to painting, sculpture, and photography, and we will be accepting video works, electronic works, and more.

If you didnt receive an email invitation to join us, but are interested in getting involved, please sign up for our mailing list at www.metrognome.org/volunteers

Thanks again, and I really can't tell you guys how exciting it is to be back on our way to bringing together the Dallas, Fort Worth and Denton Arts Communities.
