Unintended Results
Every day I'm reminded that context is what shapes every experience, conversation, and interaction. For those of you aware of 716's move to Racine, and the resulting Kenosha News article, you might also be aware of the backlash of a comment I made taken out of context. I truely meant no offense to anyone. Any insult that was percieved, I am whole heartedly sorry. I would like to prepare something to further explain the entire story. For now, please accept my apology.

An Interview on Experts
I came across an amazing interview in The February edition of Newtype–USA. The interview was with Tow Ubukata and Kenji Kamiyama, talking about the different roles, challenges and direction they have encountered in the their respective fields.
Earlier in the interview Kenji Kamiyama uses a good metaphor.
"Story planning is like building a container and then coming up with things to place in the container. And I think the two are fundamentally different tasks."
Keep this in mind.
Tow Ubukata: I know this sounds like it's coming out of nowhere, but do you know that show on TV where they tear down old buildings and build them back up using completely different design?
Kenji Kamiyama: Yeah, I know the one you mean.
TU: So you remember how that designer always shows up, the one they call "the Expert"? Well, I have a pet theory that there are in fact two types of experts in the world–the experts who design homes and the experts who build the homes.
KK: OK, I see where you're going with this.
TU: Right. Well, I think of myself as one of the design experts. Sure, I can think up a plan for a house, but what I really wish I could do was roll up my sleeves and build the actual house from the plans. That's the kind of expert I envy. In anime terms, that means the skills to direct a scene on a very detailed level in a way that breathes real life into the characters. I feel like I need to understand that process a whole lot better before I try drawing up more plans. But it takes both types to make a successful production; you can't have one without the other.
KK: Man, I couldn't agree more. The big advantage for me in playing the role of both story editor and director is that at any given point in the script, I can stop and immediately figure out how much of the budget one particular line is going to eat up. That's how I'm able to stand up and defend some lines with my life during script meetings. But on the other hand, playing both roles means I'm also more likely to limit the scope of production from the get-go. It's something I struggle with on every project–which is why, at this point in my career, I'd really like to develop the ability to come up with plot and setting ideas that aren't based on tallying up the costs by working back from a preconceived notion of how the final presentation should look.
TU: I have the opposite problem–I keep thinking up all this crazy stuff and the project's scope gets so out of control, it's not even hallway in the ballpark of being financially doable!
I'd like to know what othe people think of this before I go off on what I like about it. Please share.

Category: Art and Photography
The event at 716 went very well. There was an impressive turnout. I'll get the images up later today (hopefully).
Yay, for all the great things.

Work in Progress
Next Saturday, January 27, 2007 from 3:00-?, I will be at 716 Fine Art for a live art event. Stop by if you have a chance. I'll definitely like to post what is made. Also, I want to extend that if you see anything of mine that you like, but don't have the asking price, please talk to me and I'll do what I can do work with you. I want to sell my work, you might want to own it, and the gallery will benefit as well. It would be great for a commission.
In the meantime, here is something that I've been playing around with. I've been drawing, scanning and manipulating and then redrawing things. Here is an example of the first few steps. Comments welcome.
