the morning after....
Category: Music
'm sitting in the hotel lobby of a nice san francisco hotel yesterday morning and elvis costello and t bone burnett walk by me. i'll say it again since no one went WOW!!!!! elvis costello, a man who has NEVER had to sell out musically and somehow writes incredibly profound lyrics on any and every subject while managing to keep it melodic. and t bone, who has produced some of the best music of the past 20 years.
i farmed it. didn't get up and say hello. froze. didn't want to appear too much a fan. oh well.
so we gave away an iPod last night. a 120GB fully loaded iPod. not bad for a couple of guys in a band. BTW, no one "sponsored" this giveaway. we bought an iPod and gave it away cause that's how we roll.....we're going to do it again, too.
we hired a drummer. ryan scarbrough out of nashville. anyone coming out to the skipperdome show oct 10th will get to meet him.

drummer situation, part II
Current mood: accomplished
Category: Music
hey!!!! everyone who has written to us about the drummer deal. want to say thank you so much but we're fine. doing really good. played the staples center tonight for over 10,000 people or so and it was cool. our friend matt lucich filled in and will do some upcoming dates while we look for the perfect 3rd member so don't you cry for us!!!LOL
we get to play music for a living! we definitely had a good thing going and had no idea it was ending but this version of miggs is solid and we know who we are and there are some great drummers out there. if you know one that you think would fit have them email us.
they must be able to play to a click live, tour, hang and be nice to people, not be a headcase, no alcoholics or drug addicts please! we'd love someone who can sing background, doesn't need to be entertained while on the road and make the girls swoon. basically, if they aren't the best part of the band they're in or if people aren't always saying to them "man, you should be a rockstar" or "you are WAY too good for this band" or "once you find the right band you're going to be huge" then we probably don't want them!!!LOL
be good to yourself and the people around you. karma doesn't fuck around-
goodnight!

however, we're still playing shows and moving along. keep an eye on things, it should be interesting!!! at least we keep you on your toes!
when one door closes another opens....

when summer takes the fall...
Current mood: awake
and just like that the summer takes the fall....
spent the last few days in sheridan wyoming. yeah, i wasn't sure where it was either but it is and it was a fun little place to visit. people like their music. they like their drink there more but it was cool. did 2 shows and our first .. live webcast. that was an experience. who knew how it all worked, really?
i didn't. michael didn't and brian was too busy getting that mohawk up cause he didn't help!LOL thankfully, we logged in early and someone logged in early with us and she just kept making suggestions until we got it right. wound up having a lot of fun doing it and looking forward to next week.
i'm in an airport in minneapolis, waiting for a flight to tampa to get a day and a half at home. lucky me. yesterday we got into south dakota and before hitting the hotel we stopped at mount rushmore. amazing that that thing was built there. more amazing that no one has somehow finagled additional carvings. glad they haven't but we americans enjoy revising history. think new coke.... maybe we've learned about how these things can go awry. anyway, woke up at 4:50am and got ready in complete darkness. not sure my bandmates truly appreciated the effort. damn bandmates! i hope so. it wasn't easy and i've yet to check a mirror to see how this hair is standing. some things are better left unseen. brian drove into des moines for 2 days and michael and jensen (our tour manager) took the van to chicago this morning. we will all meet in chicago on whatever day we're supposed to. i sincerely have no clue at this moment.
we're doing the halftime show at the UIC Pavilion in chicago for the WNBA team. should be fun. we get a WHOLE 7 minutes. so that's 2 minutes to set up. 3 minutes to play a 3:35 song (the math just doesn't add up!!!) and 2 minutes to break down. not sure what they do if the time slips. we'll see, i guess.
people do love their mcDonalds, don't the they? it's 8:34 in the morning and everyone around me is chowing down. this stuff will kill you people. avoid, avoid...
found a new band to love and loaded them into the iPod yesterday morning and have listened to the album, oh.....75 times. it's nothing brilliantly done. the songs are basic. the recordings minimal, the voice effective but it is just killing me. inspiring, cool, perfect for me at this moment. this is why i LOVE to buy new music. that feeling when it's all just right in your ears. settles you down, makes it all a little clearer. oh, the band is the gaslight anthem.
it's also astonishes me at how people will believe what you tell them to believe. they list themselves as a punk band, roughly. this is not punnk music. not by any stretch to me. it's hyper and raw but to say punk is a stretch, unless we're talking the best punk like the clash, who weren't REALLY punk either- by the general definition. i can say it's what i aspire miggs to sound like. like we strapped on the instruments and just went for it. no glitz, no glitter. just emotion and adrenaline, sex, love, anger, passion.
this is a long way to go to say buy the CD.
so it was hot as hell during the days in wyoming. the nights cooled off but as we woke to leave yesterday the morning felt like fall dropped in all of a sudden. it reminded me of when i used to hang/work on fire island in new york in the summers and we knew school was coming right around today- this weekend was the last gasp for something exciting to happen before school pushed it's way back in. it felt like we were moving on to something (i'm back talking about yesterday and miggs, btw). it made me write a song. finished it in the first few hours of the van ride and will continue to tweak it.
while we were driving the other night i got to listen to obama's speech and it was so cool to hear driving without a visual. it made me think that this was what our parent's parents felt when they were inspired by a candidate or someone like king or kennedy- they would hear it and the visual was in their head, which makes it so much better to me.
anyway, i wanted to name check obama but it felt forced so i gave him a nod in the bridge. here's the song. i suspect we'll be playing it sooner than later:
Summer Takes The Fall
We wait for the sun to deflate itself Stock up on blankets and beer, tell the story bout The time that you took X and thought you were superfreak
Count the stars until we fall asleep Wake up and reach for the iPod, hit repeat And lie about big things we will likely forget
Yeah my memory is filling up fast, I regret
And just like that The summer hit the wall We were lying on the beach And ran into the fall I tried so hard to hold on tight But something's bound to slip And sorry to say that something's probably this
If we've got one night left to chase the dawn Before the love letters and the where-we-went-wrongs Let's just make damn sure it don't get better than here
And in the moments before it gets too cold We can run around naked and really be alone Solemnly swear to meet here again next year
But there never ever seems to be a next year
Turned on the radio cause we were sick of songs I got that feeling I bet when Kennedy came along And somehow, maybe everything will be all right Everything will be all right…
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la When the summer takes the fall
OK, go with God or something like that.....

people like you don’t like people like you
Current mood: drained
well here we are in sunny baton rogue. that's a lie. not the baton rogue part. we are here. but the sunny part. i have no clue. we got here at 10pm. it's hot. i can feel that much. an 11 hour driving day in the white mist. she is a workhorse of a 15 passenger van, i can assure you.
been a great few weeks for us in miggsland. I BELIEVE is 12 at AC radio in the country. go see for yer own self at fmqb.com, click AC (see my interview) and then click charts and there miggs sits. not too shabby.
we got to play with maroon 5 last week. that was a good time. felt good to be on stage with such a popular band and know we can stand up to them even without all the crew and cash.
the best part of the leaving for tour was preparing the iPod. i've been on a bit of a bender....i must confess. it's a terrible problem i have. i can't seem to put down the .......CDs in a CD store. i buy way too many. the iPod is up over 18,000 songs. it's insane and i made sure today to listen to almost all new music. what did i find?
i LOVE stereophonics: language sex violence other like both kooks albums not sure how i feel about new fratellis disc think i will really like elbow the new my morning jacket didn't strike me as brilliant as i've heard but worth a repeat. i can't remember anything else......
ok, off to bed.

how i won the East
well i didn't really win anything but i had to have a snappy subject, right? i'm about to hurl. literally. i'm so hungry. waiting on brian to pomp up his mohawk so we can mosey on to breakfast in this fine city of atlanta. 12 hours or windshield time yesterday. it wipes you out. who knew you could get so tired from doing so little? i did, oh yeah. we've been here before...
so the new CD is out and we keep getting cool emails and voice mails about it. makes you feel like you did something right so thanks if you were one of the congratulators.
been in a writing mood these past few days but not writing. it's like it's all simmering and not quite ready to be eaten just yet. i like this feeling. it's like waking up on your birthday, knowing there is going to be a great gift coming. that anticipation.
i think i slump too much. if you see me and i'm slumping, say something. pretty please. it's not a becoming look.
have any of you seen us at clear channels page where we are an artist of the month? it's like iheartmusic.com or something. i should know, huh? and also at alternativeaddiction.com we are the download of the month.
it's cool that we keep bumping into our old friends thriving ivory all over the place. they are kicking major ass and we should expect big things from those boys. and the video kills.
ok, seriously, where is brian?
