Standing on Hallowed Ground (cont’d)
I can't think of a better way to have a first time experience at the Ryman than what I just had! The Marty Stuart Late Night Jam was perfect. We played 2 songs: Sit Down Servant and I'm Gonna Get There with the Fabulous Superlatives as the backing band, along with the Roseland horn section and the always fantastic McCrary Sisters. Marty even strolled onstage with us mid way through "Get There" to get him a solo. Kenny Vaughan's one of my top 5 all-time favorite guitar players. To all our surprise the crowd dug it. Earlier in the night we all got really nervous when John Rich (Big and Rich...) went on and on about country music and rednecks...and then Getchen Wilson came out and did "Redneck Woman"...as it turned out I underestimated Marty's crowd, as they are just straight up lovers of music, just like Marty. Anytime you get the chance to see Marty and his band play, particularly when he's having an all-out shindig, don't miss it. I'm tellin' you right now Marty Stuart is a treasure in this town. The dude has entertainment down to a T and he just so happens to be a stellar musician with a stellar band. We got back home around 3am (really late for me nowadays) and couldn't sleep. Another milestone that Rose and I had talked about and scribbled on pieces of paper as many lists of "things to do". I'm so glad I get to play music! Mike

Spring, Sprang, Sprung and Record Store Day
Hiya everybody!! We had FROST this morning.....38 degrees at 7:02a.m.......It's because it's April 15th, tax day. Last year, our last frost of the year was guess.....April 15th!!! Coincidence? Not so sure bout that. I gotta stop talking to ya'll bout the weather, man, I'm weirdin' myself out. I think the last blog I wrote, I talked about the weather...old folks talk about the weather.... The reason I'm writing is to remind you that this week we celebrate Record Store Day!! This is a big deal because we like record stores. Record stores are good and we don't want to see them go away anytime soon, and they're already on the endangered species list. I have hope and I'm optimistic though! I think people are always gonna wanna get there hands on rare stuff, vinyl, posters, and such. The most important thing people are gonna want is a sonically true representation of the sounds that the artist had in mind for the listener to hear. Support your local record store this week! We'll be doin' our part by going down to Grimey's here in Nashville to play some music and buy some schwag. Now on to other news. The latest "SHOUT! The Newsletter comes out this week. If you are not on the mailing list, you'll miss out on the goings on!!! The Sunday Night Shouts down at the Station Inn are rockin'!!!!!! The place has been packed to capacity and Jimmy Hall and Danny Flowers both came in and turned the place OUT!! The shows are FREE and you never know who's gonna show up to play! Don't miss one! It's a beautiful day out now. The frost has gone away. I'm gonna go out in the yard and get some sun on my face. I suggest you do the same some time today!!! Here's hopin' these words find you all happy and well!!!!!!!!!! gratefully, Mike

SxSw, etc....
Woke up to snow this morning in Tennessee, but only a dusting, which is the common thing around here. We miss the snow in New York. REAL winters! I enjoy the seasons in all their glory, so the snow never bothered me at all. The lack of snow in winter, or these little dustings is annoying, like some elemental joke....Transplanted northerners get real impatient with southern folks this time of year too, because every time it spits snow, southerners freak out and wanna close schools, cancel rotary, shriners, yoga, AA, NA, public bathrooms, post office, and so it goes. Trees have had buds on them ALL winter here!!!!! Weather in Tennessee is crazy this time of year. The best part is most any given week you have a great chance of going out and playing a round of golf!!! Gotta love that. And before anybody starts, lemme say, golf is VERY rock and roll and unless you rock and roll yourself you have no say in what is and what ain't!! I'm going to South By Southwest this year. My first trip. I wanted and tried to get the SCW down there for many years and it never happened, so I'm pretty excited. The best parts of the trip are as follows: 1).The band. I got Audley (Freed) and Andy (Hess) playing the gigs with me and anytime we can get together it's always special because I love these 2 human beings and they happen to play their tail's off. I'm also excited to have Fred Eltringham (Wallflowers, Dixie Chicks)on drums 2). We are playing Antone's as part of the Americana Showcase. I got to play Antone's with Double Trouble a few times and I love it! Now I get to play SIL on that stage! KILLER! 3). Mexican food. 4). Texas BBQ. 5). Getting to see Tommy Shannon, Chris Layton and their families. I love these guys. They are near and dear to me and I cherish our friendship. One day I wanna play some more music with these great musicians. 6). Threadgill's. I get to play the historic venue for the first time as part of the Walter Hyatt Tribute. If you're ever in Austin on a Sunday, go check out the brunch at Threadgill's!! If you're on a diet, skip it and go to whole foods or something, I don't know, I don't diet. 7). Dolly Parton. She's scheduled to perform and I have a pass already for this through BMI, but she just canceled a bunch of dates because of (get this) back problems..........She recently was quoted as saying she was now unsure if "they'd" "been supporting her or she been supporting them!!!!" AHAHAHA!! I really hope she plays because I really wanna hear that angelic voice of hers in the same room as me!! Dolly is the real deal, don't be mistaken for a minute. 8). Roadtrippin' through hill country out around Lake Travis. 9). Stubbs. Another great venue I am glad I get to play. I've played Stubbs before and I am thrilled to go back to that stage. This will be part of the BMI mixer. I'm thinkin' of doing what I call the "Pops" set up for this one. "Pops", meaning we go with an abbreviated version of the band, consisting of the girls, Eric Holt on piano, and me and that's it. Kinda like what Pops Staples had going with the Staple Singers. A LOT of music gets made with this set up, don't be fooled!! 10). Austin, Texas. This, to me, is the best city in America, for many many reasons. If ever you have the chance, go spend some time there and see for yourself!! That's all I got for now. I do wanna thank Tony Lawson at WDVX in Knoxville for having me back on the show last week. Thanks also to Chris Irish and his family for having me in extremely pleasant Rockwood(it's always gonna be "Rockridge" to me), Tn. for a show at his little country church. Thank you both for your kindness and generosity.
regards!!!! Mike
p.s. Oh, I forgot to axt you. Has anybody gone and downloaded one of the ringtones yet??? What do they sound like? I gotta know.
