DC/MD/PA Acting Resources
Current mood: artistic
Category: Jobs, Work, Careers

Some Basic Information.

An Agent is the person you hire to find work for you.
It is your responsibility to pay them for finding you work,
Usually a commission (from 10% to 20% of the amount you were
paid).

A Casting Director is the Production Companies Employee
(paid by them)to find the Actors they need for their Production.

A Manager is a person you Hire (and Pay a Commission) to Handle
details about your Career.

RULE 1

There are NO FEE'S in OUR INDUSTRY NONE -- NEVER -- NO MATTER
WHAT THEY CALL IT Agents, Casting Directors & Managers are paid
well doing their JOBS. If someone wants money from you up-front
(not related to a job you have finished and been paid for) RUN.

RULE 2

It is OK for an Agent, Casting Director or Manager to tell you
that you need Better Headshots, Comp Cards or Training. It is
not OK for them to tell you who to go to (They can provide a
list of options -- Even recommend someone that they know Provides
High Quality) But the Choice is yours & yours ALONE.

RULE 3

This is A FreeLance Market. Be Careful of Any Contracts that have
an EXCLUSIVE CLAUSE IN THEM. In This Market (Baltimore Md, Washington
DC & Richmond Va --- The Philadelphia Market makes Greater Use of the
Agent System) Casting Directors Seldom call Agents (All Casting
Directors Have their own files and Hire direct) and when they do it
is Seldom for ALL THE AVAILABLE ROLES. An Exclusive Contract Requires
you to pay the AGENT for work they DID NOT get you --
EVEN when you already paid the Agent that DID get you the job.

RULE 4

WEB SITES are the new "THING" in Marketing. Each month more Agents &
Casting Directors are Setting Them up and Charging us for them. We Can't Afford to be on all of them and should be careful how we spend our
marketing money.

Some guidelines
While I would rather not pay at all I understand the Thousands of Dollars
invested in Developing these sites and fee's paid Monthly to maintain them.
(I Also Know They are already paid to maintain their files) So this is Complicated.

Here is the thing -- 3 of the area's Largest Casting Directors have sites--
EACH hires over 1000 Actors (1 Actor working 1 day) a Month -- 2 of them
charge $125 per year, the other charges $40. So when someone asks for $150,
$200, $500, $1500 a year for their site Ask yourself " How many more than
1000 Actors a month does this place Hire??? -- Then RUN

I don't mind paying $25 to a small agent or even a little more to a Huge Casting Director IF THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE OF GETTING A GREAT RETURN ON
MY INVESTMENT.

NYC, LA and other Us Markets

I don't have an extensive list of websites for Casting Directors in NYC & LA
(but if you know of any I would love for you to send them to me at
bdragonuk@hotmail.com) At some point I want to do a google search on
the NYC & LA Casting Directors looking for websites but Just do not
have the time -- if a couple of you have time -- it would really help
EVERYONE out.

Should I send Directly to the Casting Director or Use an Agent??

An agent seems to be more useful in LA then NYC but if you want speaking
parts in NYC you would probably be better off finding an Agent there.
Don't rule out NYC Extra work -- MANY people from the Balto / Wash area
did an extra job in NYC put it on their Resume - Then in their cover
letter to Agents & Casting Directors in NYC - made a remark about "Doing
that job" to get some NYC Experience, Loved working there -- Want to
do more work there ETC to Open the Doors a bit --- As far as I know
it has ALWAYS worked.

I am also being told the NYC Casting Directors LOVE THE QUALITY of the
Actors From The BALTIMORE/ WASHINGTON DC / PHILADELPHIA, RICHMOND area
(ESPECIALLY OUR SAG /AFTRA ACTORS) so this is the time to get established
in NYC.

That will not Work in LA -- If you want a Speaking part there you need
to make sure only Principal roles for FINISHED projects are on your
resume -- No Extra roles, no Modeling, NO Promotional work -- Trade
Shows etc (that should not be on a resume here either but I see it all
the Time), No Print work Just Film & Video or TV Principal work.

You also have to look at What the Agent or Casting Director Does for a
living -- They are Specialized in Both markets.

Someone doing TV Shows might not do Movies, TV Commercials , PSA'S or
Industrials Or they Might -- so the Resume you give them has to
reflect the Work they do. The one Resume fits all Agents and Casting
Directors (Except the Promotional & Trade Show work) that works well
here just shows a lack of understanding for the market there.

I Keep several versions of my Resume in a computer file and print the
best one for the type of work I am applying for now, and I don't Work
the other Markets.

If you Call someone and they are obviously PISSED that you are on the
phone --HANG UP -- If they appear to want to talk still keep it short
who you are, what you are looking for, do you have an Open Call that I
can come in for?? etc

Anyway The Best Up to date source for casting Directors any place in
the country is the CASTING SOCIETY OF AMERICA website

http://www.castingsociety.com/

If you go to their search for CD page

http://www.castingsociety.com/Members

and put in California you get a list of 250 or so California Based
Casting Directors. If you are looking at the NYC market -Put in New
York and get a list of 70 or So New York based Casting Directors
Texas, Florida ETC.

Go to CSA Member Episodic Casting Assignments
http://www.castingsociety.com/episodic
and get a list of 150 or so that have TV SHOWS on the air Right now

Not all Casting Directors are CSA members but those that are have signed
a Code of Ethics on how they will Run their Business. You will also
note in California quite a few have "C/o Csa" and 606 N. Larchmont
Blvd as an address.

Some actually work out of the Casting Society of America Building --
Others have a Mail drop there so 300,000 Actors do not show up each
week.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A NATIONAL source for AGENTS
Association of Talent Agents (ATA)
http://www.agentassociation.com/frontdoor/membership_directory.cfm
This is A national List of Agents, Again ALL Agents may not be ATA
members but those that are have signed a Code of Conduct.
The list shows Exactly what type of Talent theAgency you are Looking At
is looking to Represent.
A-Actors, W-Writers, D-Directors, C-Commercials, EQ-Theatre or Legit,
ATH-Athletes, B-Broadcasters, BTL-Below-The-Line, CC-Commercial Celebrity,
CH-Choreographers, DNC-Dancers, H-Hosts, IM-Interactive Multimedia,
P-Print PUP-Puppeteers, PWD-Performers w/Disabilities, S-Singers,
ST-Stunts, VO-Voice Over ,Y-Youth
Want to Know the Difference Between an Agent ansd A Manager Read the
FQA section of this site.
Here is one thing from there
How are ATA agents different from managers?
The job of the ATA agent is to create opportunities, procure and
negotiate employment for clients and counsel them in the development
of their careers. Agents in most states must be licensed by the state,
city or appropriate governing body. Managers are not regulated nor are
they required to have a license. Under law, managers may not procure
employment for artists or negotiate without a licensed agent, and any
person who renders Agent services without a license may have their
contract invalidated and be forced to relinquish any commissions paid.
****************************************************************************
LOOKING FOR A MANAGER (Have A career First)
1 Very Important thing
A Manager can do a proper job Managing the careers of about 50 People.
If you are in an office and you know they have 2000 headshots and you
do not see 40 Employee's you are in an Agents office. It does not Matter
if the Word Manager or Managemnt is in their name or not. NO they did not
tell 1950 other people they would not manage their careers so they could
keep a spot open -- Just in Case you Called.
Again All managers are Not Members of this Group but READ the 1st Page
Carefully --It tells you What A Managers Job is AND What it is not.
ALL Managers MUST do the WORK a Manager is Required to do.
http://www.ncopm.com/
Carefully Read The Code of Conduct the Members of this Group Signed
http://www.ncopm.com/html/code_of_ethics.htm
Look Here for a List of their Members
and Karen through his (now defunct) engagement to Karen's best friend
Holly. Has been turning down invitations to Karen & Mike's house since
the breaking of the engagement. Misses hanging out with Mike and Ryan.
Holly - Mid 20's female. Karen's best friend; they grew up in the same
neighborhood, went to the same high school and youth group together.
Holly's the smart one, Karen's the ambitious one. Holly was engaged
to Wil until she caught him in a not-so-reputable establishment
exhibiting less-than-exemplary behavior.
Ryan - Early 30's male. Very enthusiastic about sports and beer.
Michael's former college roommate and now best friend. Ryan kind of
likes Holly, but overall is a little gunshy with the womenfolk.
Postproduction Update
By TyFord: The last five years have tried the patience, resources and
reserves of almost every professional video operation. Some facilities
have filed Chapter Eleven, some have moved to smaller spaces or into
their homes and others have simply gone out of business. At the risk
of being overly optimistic, the long cold winter precipitated by 9/11,
the DotCom crash and the profusion of low cost solutions for video
production and postproduction may be coming to an end. For this
report, iCOM surveyed the economic and technology terrains by speaking
with four mid-atlantic postproduction facilities. Although your
particular mileage may vary, what we learned has national
implications.
from a culinary accident. Damian is the character the audience feels
for the most. He has a true innocence about him. Very trapped in his
dry sense of humor. Strong and sensible but much wounded beneath the
Hi all, I have decided to add two additional shows to the Differences
In Show shoot, that is now taking place in March for the DC Metro
Area. Differences In White People and Differences in Music will be
shot in the DC Metro Area along with the other Differences In
Projects. Please review the Upcoming Projects section on the Twyman
Creative Site. As always, we mainly give roles to Twyman Creative
members above others. If interested send headshot and resume. Make
sure that you list the role you are interested in.
Differences In Shows will be:
Differences In Black People (ALL ROLES FILLED)
Differences In Politics
Differences In Religion
Differences In White People
Differences In Music
This is a 1/2 improv show. Because we are growing ourselves, credit
will be offered for the roles, which is not bad for 1/2 hour. Please
contact me if you are interested.
view our film and vote. Also, please ask as many
people as you can to do likewise. This is a really
good opportunity for those who have not seen the short
