Vandals damage Stonehenge
Thu May 22, 7:33 AM ET
Vandals used a hammer and screwdriver to vandalise the Stonehenge ancient monument, the first such incident for decades, officials said Thursday.
The night-time attack by two men last week involved the central megalith in the 5,000-year-old ring of standing stones, with English Heritage saying the vandals could have been looking for a souvenir.
A chip of stone about the size of a large coin was removed, while a 2.5-inch long scratch was left on the Heel Stone, at the centre of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, near Salisbury.
"Thanks to the vigilance and quick action of the security team at Stonehenge, very minimal damage was caused," said a spokeswoman for English Heritage.
"A tiny chip was taken from the north side of the Heel Stone with a screwdriver and hammer, but as soon as the two men were spotted by security guards they escaped over the fence and drove off.
"This is now a matter for the police," she added.
A spokeswoman for Wiltshire Police said: "Two male offenders were seen disturbing the monument with a hammer and screwdriver... It is believed they could be two men seen acting suspiciously on a previous occasion."
Stonehenge is one of the world's best preserved prehistic monuments. In around 2,600 BC, 80 giant standing stones were arranged on Salisbury Plain, where there was already a 400-year-old stone circle.
Around two centuries later, even bigger stones were brought to the plain.
Today, only 40 percent of the originals remain. But around 850,000 visitors per year come to marvel at the 17 stones which are still intact.
The biggest stones came from a quarry some 18 miles away, while some of the others come from a range of hills in south-west Wales -- a 150 mile journey.

Bulldogs
Check out this video: 2008 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show - Bulldog
<
My brother and sister in law recently got a bulldog puppy (named Dooney). She has got to be one of the sweetest dogs ever. And, she grunts constantly; she's hilarious! I guess this is what she'll grow up to look like.

More stories from Costa Rica
Current mood: animated
Category: Sports
Greg managed to get online and email me last night from a place called Hacienda Guachipelin. He is having the time of his life and has fallen in love the beautiful country and gracious people of Costa Rica. His latest race report puts him in 10th place in the Expedition run category. He completed the latest leg of the race in 6:45:20, which included a mile river swim/trek that ended at a breathtaking waterfall.
There are some wonderful stories in this brief report. One that got me, naturally, was the story of the little stray dog that followed runners for two days. As a result, a couple adopted the little dog and named her Tica.
You can read all about it and see some amazing photos on the race report.
I'm so proud of Greg and really excited for him. He's worked very hard for this, physically and mentally and to hear such great news makes my day! Oh, and he said he has had the best Ceviche ever there! That's huge because he is a Ceviche snob!

Tagged By Sus!
Here's how you play. Once you've been tagged, you have to write a blog with ten weird, random things, facts, or habits about yourself. At the end, you choose ten people to be tagged, listing their names and why you chose them to be tagged. Don't forget to leave them a comment "You're It!" and to read your blog. You can't tag the person who tagged you. Since you can't tag me back, let me know when you've posted your blog so I can see your answers.
1) I spent my entire life living in California until 2004, when I moved to Massachusetts for work.
2) I used to spend nearly every weekend in a beautiful log house in the mountains. I was there for Thanksgiving 2001 and a storm blew out the pilot light while my turkey was cooking. I had to plug the oven into the emergency generator! Second best turkey I ever cooked!
3) The best I cooked was this past Thanksgiving in Silverado at a cottage in the mountains. Apparently I love them mountain men!
4) I found my dog on a golf course after a hurricane in Florida.
5) I don't like snowcones.
6) I grew up in a haunted house. Or perhaps my family was haunted. Who knows?
7) My mom put a stupid safety flag on my Huffy (with the banana seat) as a kid.
8) I lost my front baby teeth at age five when my friend Jayzelle rolled over on my head. (We were rolling down the hill in my front yard and she rolled over my head).
9) As a kid I was called "bossy". Now I am called "assertive." Is there a difference?
10) I dislike the nouveaux-riche and the pseudo-riche (wanabe rich). They are the most personally offensive people IMHO. If you have enough to be comfortable, kudos. If you have more than that, then help those who need it.

Wonderful Diabetes
Current mood: worried
Category: Pets and Animals
I think my old cat Suzi has diabetes. The symptoms came on last night, but they were not noticable to me until this afternoon when she began to walk on her hocks and visited the litter box a lot more than usual. Symptoms for feline diabetics are much like those for people: lots of pee pee time and excessive water consumption, both of which I see. She is also a chubber, weighing in at over 20 pounds. The leg issue is apparently neuropathy, which is another symptom of high glucose.
I worked with diabetics for six years during the early part of my career, so I am a pretty well-trained barometer for diabetes detection.
Soooo, we're off to see Dr. Jan tomorrow, who is reputed to be a saint in vet care and holistic treatments. I suspect we have insulin shots in our near future, but hopefully Dr. Jan can also suggest some dietary components to stabilize her and keep the insulin shots to a minimum.
I feel so bad for her. Poor thing. Old age really is for the birds, whether it be for people or pets. I'll keep you posted.
****She's got it. Insulin begins next week. Can't wait for that little slice of heaven! LOL! But she's okay; just fat and old. Or, as we women love to spin things, plump and mature.

Tell me they’re joking
Current mood: amused
Category: Life
I was looking around for some cool seasonal photos using the search term "Yule" and you'll never guess what I found? "Yule Log Hotties." Think I'm kidding? Think again. Do I even want to know what these women are doing with logs? Probably not. Let's not even think of the damage they could do with Figgy Pudding.
You know what's the most annoying about this? They're not even wearing holiday-inspired tassels. Gasp!
This would make great fodder for Sandy Stec or Tim Babb. I know I got a chuckle, sad as it is.

Terribly....
Current mood: busy
Category: Food and Restaurants
....Tasty!
I've been extremely busy--as usual--and rarely take much time to cook, even though I really enjoy it. And I love trying new things as long as they don't contain onions, pickles and other shite. In addition, I like to field test my ideas on myself (and my dog) before I serve them to someone else. If Manny hates it, you know it sucks.
Sooo....today I was craving a burger but I try to keep that at a minimum--say once or twice a month. I had some leftover couscous and lean steak. I came up with a really cool concoction and it's definitely a nice replacement for a burger. I know it's not original, but it is to me. That said, cope with it in silence you foodies and foodie wannabes.
Gwen's Burger Substitute: It consists of
--One whole wheat pita cut in half
--8 oz of lean, cooked steak strips (or "steak tips" for you New Englanders and Mid Atlanticans)
--Quarter Cup of whole wheat couscous (obviously pre-cooked); Near East makes a quick-cooking couscous (about seven minutes all told)
--A tablespoon of shaved parmesan (not the powdered stuff, but real, shaved parma)
--A teaspoon of hot pepper sesame oil
**Take the sliced pitas and layer them with couscous, parmesan and then steak. Top it with more parmesan and drizzle the pepper oil on top of each. Nuke it for about a minute until the parmesan begins to melt. Remove it an enjoy. It's so filling, you won't want or need fries. Mess with the fillings to match your personal taste. It's kind of a Middle East meets America meets China mix and, IMHO, it rocks! It's fast and cheap too! Kind of like Sascha. UH OH!
Buon appetito!

But I didn't, so I'll borrow it. Thanks Transglobal Underground.
