Name Dropping and More
Current mood: worried

Well, it's that time again - the time where we begin to turn our attention to the next issue we'll be doing. Trust me, I'd much rather post stuff like this than stuff about our financial troubles, but those are still an unsettling reality that needs addressing if we're to survive - so I have to waste time trying to drum up support rather than address the cooler stuff - like the reviews and things we'll be doing. Well, for now I'm going to look at that stuff - but there will be a cry for help at the end of this blog.

So, just to drop some names - these are the CD/DVD reviews we hope to have for you for next time - just by the name of the artist. Keep in mind this list may be taken away from or added to by the time we're done.

OK, now for the other issue. Support is still WEAK. That means that as it sits right now we'll be doing regular issues through the end of the year and then the February issue will be our last - with the site disappearing at some point after that. You can help to keep Music Street Journal (musicstreetjournal.com) alive. If you've been covered by the site or if you just enjoy reading our articles, please try to help us stay alive. We need money to cover rising expenses and you can help us by donating, buying a membership - check out the video on this profile for more about what you get with a membership (mind you that's outdated and there is a lot more cool stuff there now), buying a banner ad, or buying a sponsorship. You can do all of those things by going to the "click to register" link at the main site - right next to the log in box - at musicstreetjournal.com. We wouldn't be asking like this if the danger of the site disappearing forever wasn't real. We NEED your help and we need it now.

Thanks

Gary

The Future

The future of Music Street Journal is in your hands. It might seem an overused phrase, but in the case, it really is true. For over ten years Music Street Journal has been bringing CD reviews, concert reviews, interviews and more to our readers (and there are about 20,000 a day now). Until recently it was all free. The thing is, over the years we kept hearing from the readers that the site design was clumsy and stale - and it was. So, we listened and had it redesigned. The trouble is that cost money and time and required us switching to a more expensive server. We incorporated a members only area so that we could make back some of those costs and perhaps pay to have some our publicity done and maybe, just maybe, turn a bit of a profit. Well, so far it hasn't panned out that way, memberships have been slow coming in and we're losing money out of the proposition. I've run this thing out of my own pocket for the entire time and with greater operating costs and more and more time required to keep this thing going, it's just not practical anymore. So, the future of the site is in your hands. If we can make this thing work financially it will go on indefinitely. But if it is still losing money by the time our December issue goes live, the site will be in its final phases. That's the deciding point right there. If we are still deep in the red we'll do one more issue after that (February) and stop publishing. Mind you, we'll still keep adding to the members area to give the current members their money's worth, but then the site will go away after the last membership has expired.

So, what can you do to help?

You can buy a membership - prices range from $6 for a month to 25 for a full year. And this is not a charity donation, you get a lot for your money including exclusive access to material provided by over a 130 musical artists, a chance to interact with many of them, massive concert photo galleries, audio interviews and the chance to read my book The Strange Sound of Cthulhu - Music Inspired by the Writings of H. P. Lovecraft online. You also get access to our massive archives of our articles from the whole history of Music Street Journal. The current issue is a free zone, but to check out the older articles you need a membership. I think it's a bargain and should include the added bonus of a "good feeling" for helping the site survive.

You can buy a banner ad. They cost $65 for a year and get you in front of all our readers (20K per day).

You can buy a membership. Email me for more information about this option, but we have several price points and all include banner ads and memberships at special group pricing.

You can blog or otherwise publicize the site and encourage your readers to buy a membership.

If you've read Music Street Journal over the years, it's been possible because I've paid for the site out of my pocket. Now, I'm asking you to help with those costs - kind of like NPR.

If you've gotten publicity at Music Street Journal in the past, it's been at my expense - and I'm asking you to help pull your weight now.

If you've already helped us out, consider this a thank you, but if you can get others to also sign up and help is in one way or another, it would be appreciated. The future really is in your hands.

For more information check out the site at musicstreetjournal.com or email me at musicstreetjournal@musicstreetjournal.com or check out this video

Our Archives - More and More Complete Every Day

I've mentioned before that we're in the process of getting all our archives moved from the old version of the site to the new one. Well, some letters are finished and we're still plugging away. I've been posting these as separate releases, but figured I'll consolidate them all in one place. Keep in mind that while these are all the letters we have completed, every letter has some of its content moved. We've got the last several issues in. Also, remember that in order to read the full text of anything other than the current issue you'll need to get a membership, but they start at six bucks and include a ton of other stuff – see the video (underneath the log in box) for more details.

If you are a musician or in a band and the name starts with a one of these letters check the list – you might be there! Well, with no further delay, here's a look at the archive letters that are finished – first, for CD reviews, we've got these.

All Our Archives - Are You In There?

I’ve mentioned before that we’re in the process of getting all our archives moved from the old version of the site to the new one. Well, some letters are finished and we’re still plugging away. I’ve been posting these as bulletins, but figured I’ll do a blog to consolidate them all in one place. Keep in mind that while these are all the letters we have completed, every letter has some of its content moved. We’ve got the last several issues in and "C" is probably over half done. Also, remember that in order to read the full text of anything other than the current issue you’ll need to get a membership, but they start at six bucks and include a ton of other stuff – see my last blog or the video on this profile – how about both – for more details.

If you are a musician or in a band and the name starts with a  one of these letters check the list – you might be there!  Well, with no further delay, here’s a look at the archive letters that are finished – first, for CD reviews, we’ve got these.

How it All Breaks Down

I thought I’d give everyone some ideas of how the whole Music Street Journal membership breaks down in terms of what you get for your money.

A one month membership is six dollars. One of the things you get with your membership is the ability to read the book The Strange Sound of Cthulhu – Music Inspired by the Writings of H. P. Lovecraft online. That book retails for 24 dollars if you buy it. So, here you can read it for just six dollars and then all the other content in the members area could be considered "bonus!"

A three month membership is twelve bucks. Another thing you get with your membership is access to content by different bands. We’re constantly adding more acts, but in general you can sample songs, or watch videos (sometimes both) from the bands. You can also ask some of them questions and read blogs by some of the artists. We currently have these artists in there – with more being added on a daily basis lately.

With 68 bands there now that comes to less than twenty cents a band – and again that means that everything else in the members area is free if you figure it out that way – bonus once more.

A six month membership is fifteen dollars. In addition to everything else listed above, your membership also includes access to our massive photo galleries. These are generally pictures that are larger and higher quality than the ones that appear with our concert reviews. In most cases you get lots of extra pictures that never ran at the site (and often anywhere else) before. There are actually galleries of concerts that we never covered at the site. The bands included right now (once more, galleries are being added on a regular basis) are:

Alice Cooper

  • Toto (2 galleries)
  • UFO
  • Uli Jon Roth
  • Y & T
  • Yes (5 galleries)

With well over 2,000 pics in those galleries, based on the six month price they cost you less than a penny a piece – and that calculation again makes everything else in the members area "free with purchase bonuses."

A one year membership is $25 dollars and membership also includes access to our archives.  We’re still in the process of putting these in, but once we’re done that means you’ll have access to well over 2.500 articles that aren’t accessible without a membership. Since each issue gets put into the archives after the next one goes up, that number is growing every two months – and at 2,500 articles, they are yours to access for a penny each – and again, that means everything else in the members’ area comes "bonus" with that price.

I haven’t even mentioned our audio interviews, but you get those in the members area, too. Right now we have interviews with Electric Wizard, Enslaved, Exodus, Dave Brock of Hawkwind, Roine Stolt of The Flower Kings (this one won’t even be in MSJ – or anywhere besides the members area – until the next issue goes up), Neal Morse when he was in Spock’s Beard, Ray Manzarek of the Doors and The Tangent’s Andy Tillison (this is another that won’t be published in print til next issue – but you can check it out now in the members area).

In any event, the current issue of Music Street Journal is always accessible to everyone (member or not). From the main page you can also access press releases and tour dates that have been submitted without a membership. But really with a membership you get so much more.

Maybe the biggest benefit is that you’ll be helping to guarantee that Music Street Journal can stay afloat. Without financial support of membership sales and advertising (email me for info about ads and sponsorships) the site won’t be able to continue. All of the coverage we do will be no more if we can’t make the bills. So, perhaps the best thing is that, in addition to all the stuff mentioned above, you get the chance to be part of keeping a site covering music you like alive.

Check out the site at www. musicstreetjournal. com.

Have a look at the video on this profile - or the same video at the site (look under the log in box) - for a more visual picture of what Music Street Journal is all about. Then get yourself a membership (hit the "click to register" button next to the log in box) and stop missing out.

New Issue Is Up...

Well folks, here we are again with another issue of Music Street Journal. I hope by now you’ve gotten a chance to check out the new site. We’re still working on assembling the archives into the new format – it’s quite time consuming. We’ve added a lot to the members area since we launched. In fact, there is a new audio interview with Andy Tillison of The Tangent that was just done a couple days ago. We didn’t have time to get it transcribed yet for print at the site, but we’ve got the audio uploaded in the members area. So, for the next two months that’s the only place you can check it out.

That brings up another point – and this is important. We appreciate all of your support over the years, but honestly, Music Street Journal costs money to keep running. It also takes massive amounts of time and work. We really need your financial support to keep this thing going. It’s been a "money losing" project from the beginning, but it just can’t continue that way. So, if you appreciate Music Street Journal, get over there and buy a membership – without support the site won’t last into next year – and that’s not an exaggeration. For information about what you get with memberships, check out the video posted on the main page of the site – it’s right under the box where you log in and register.

Hey folks - first off, those of you popping into this blog for the announcement for music fans and musicians, check out my previous posting and the comments that go with it.

Now for the new blog posting. First if you want to check out the current issue of Music Street Journal, time is running out. At some point Friday a new issue will launch. When it does the current issue will be relegated to the archives - and you’ll need a membership to read those articles. So, hurry over to www.musicstreetjournal.com to check it out today.

Next up - have a look at the video I just added to the profile. This will give you a great look at what Music Street Journal has in store for you - both the free and members sections. It’ll take about three and a half minutes of your time, but you get to listen to some killer music from Scott Mosher in the process. Just scroll down my profile til you see the video and hit "play."

Well, that’s all for now. Get on over to musicstreetjournal.com and get yourself a membership. If you want to buy an ad, drop me an email.

The Proper Care and Feeding of Music

We here at Music Street Journal are working on the next issue, which will be up at the site in about ten days. The thing is, there has been something else on my mind lately – partly due to issues we are having with the site and partly due to recurring themes I’ve been hearing from musicians. It seems as good a time as any to expound upon this theme. Those of you reading this are, no doubt, music fans. It seems likely that the music you listen to isn’t the stuff you hear on Top 40 radio. You are the people who really need to consider the proper care and feeding of music.

As much as people talk about doing music for the love of their art (and there is something to that) no one can continue to produce quality music without financial support. The truth is, time spent making music is time that could be spent doing something else (even if that’s working in a factory) to make a living. So, by replacing that labor income with money for the musician’s time is crucial if they are to have time to continue to make music. This used to be a lot easier to do. The truth of the matter is, illegal downloading does have a major effect on music. And it’s a snowball effect. If you participate in illegal downloading you are effectively starving the artists you take the music from. You wouldn’t starve a pet if you loved it, would you? Then why do the same thing to the musicians whose work you love?

Here’s a more detailed analysis of how this whole chain works. By taking music for free you make it harder and harder for the music you like to be produced. This means that some of those musicians will simply call it quits and you will lose out on any future works from them. Others have to find other ways to make money. Some turn to selling merchandise (shirts, buttons, etc.) at a higher price than they did before to make up for that loss. Others resort to trying to make a living from live gigs.

The vicious circle with live gigs is this – it used to be that concert tours usually lost money. The labels would sponsor the tour and take the expenses in order to promote the albums – and the live shows would result in increased sales to make it a worthwhile expenditure. This also helped to keep ticket prices down. With the downfall of music sales this was no longer possible. That means that the chance to see groups in your home town is less and less common. And when they do come around you have to pay much more dearly for the tickets because in many cases it’s one of the few ways that the artist can put food on their table. Now, the end result is that due to higher ticket prices you are seeing lower attendance, which breeds higher prices, etc. It is another vicious circle. I know of one prominent progressive rock musician who recently had to cancel a big festival because they were going to lose too much money on it. Who loses out, the fans. Of course, for everyone of those fans who downloaded the latest CD by that artist, it’s their own fault. Those of you who bought the disc, though, also paid the price.

The vicious circle continues. Lack of sales means that bands and labels have no money to buy advertising. That’s where we come in. Sites like Music Street Journal provide a way for fans and artist to connect in terms of readers seeing what is out there. It allows people to read reviews and interviews and make an informed decision about what music to get. But, MSJ costs money and time to maintain, as well. Without advertising budgets for musical acts and labels that support has to come from the readers. When we redid our site and added the new members area our goal was not only to provide a better zine for everyone, but also to try to keep this thing going, by making it profitable. If one out of every 2,000 visitors to the site were to buy a membership, then it would work. Well, the everyone wants something for free approach applies there, too. We have sold more like one for every 2 million visitors. We can’t survive on that.

While I’m not sure a lot of artists would agree with me (but I’ll bet they would) checking out a couple songs (or even a whole album – too many discs have one or two good songs and a lot of garbage) is kind of like looking over a book at the store. I don’t really see a problem like that. But if you are going to keep those songs and continue to listen to them, you need to buy them. If you don’t, your pet will die. The moral of the story here is – feed your pet music. Buy CD’s or at least buy legal downloads of the music. Support the publications that support your favorite artists. Without your support the whole house of cards tumbles down and you won’t have music from your favorite musicians. You also won’t have any publications out there that focus on anything but the latest pop star. Buy a membership to Music Street Journal today and then get out a buy some music, too.

Name Dropping

It's still a little early to get into too much detail about what we're going to have for the upcoming issue of Music Street Journal - due at the end of the month, but I can give you all some names about what we're hoping to have - or should I say "planning to have?" In any event, consider this a bit of name dropping.

For progressive rock reviews we're looking at these names for this time: Abigail's Ghost, Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe, Anderson, Jon, Astral Asia, Breech, Tara Busch, Expedition, Fairport Convention, Fish, Louise Fraser, Genesis, Ghost Circus, Invisigoth, Billy Jenkins, Latent Anxiety, Craig McConnell, Mooch, Moongarden, Mothergong, Vladiswar Nadishana, Arek Religa, Rising Appalachia, RPWL, Salem, Satellite, Simon Says, Soul Secret, Chris Squire, The Tangent, Tangerine Dream, Triangle Exception, Rick Wakeman and Mark Wingfield.

In terms of new metal reviews, we're expecting to cover Anger Unlimited, Devil Dust, Iron Maiden, Lillian Axe and Primordial and should have a new interview with Electric Wizard.

In the "everything else" category we're looking at new reviews of Sylvi Alli, America, Black 47, Albert Collins, Patrick Dorobisz, Duke Ellington, Amy Farris, Flogging Molly, Quincy Jones, Marco-Fumo, Matt Martino, Naturally 7, The Smiths, Sons of Perdition, George Strait, Then There Were Two, Toto, The Ventures and Waves and we're hoping to have an interview with The Ventures and a Suzanne Vega concert review.

Remember, that means the time is running out to check out the issue that's up now. Mind you, it will always live in the archives, but you'll need a membership to read the articles there. The current issue is the free zone of the site and all the rest requires a membership. That said, with prices starting at $6 and a TON of great exclusive material, memberships are a bargain. In any event, stop by www.musicstreetjournal.com to check it all out today. In the meantime, have a look around at this profile for lots of information how you can use Music Street Journal for your promotion and if you scroll down you can see a bit of a preview of the members area.
