Hi Misty
Finally got it together. My apologies for the delay.
Here goes nuthin...!
Full Name:
Robert Lee
Position on Mythbusters:
Narrator
Are you married, and do you have any kids?
Yes, with two girls, 17 and 14.
What is your favorite myth and why?
Gee, this is a toughie. I loved the small car compactor between two big trucks, favorite explosion has to be Cement Truck, and I loved Beat the Breathalyser - "the nice police officer wants you to drink more", but really, I really believe each myth has its own special moment, even though some myths are more spectacular than others. For example, the Leave the Lights on to Save Energy myth (the name of the myth may not be correct, here) was wonderfully practical and probably settled many a family bet. Confederate Rocket was a classic in my book, as it was a voyage of discovery for the guys, it demonstrated an incredible amount of ingenuity and taught us a bit of Civil War history. Oh, and there was controlled explosion of sorts (lol). However, there’s been over 100 episodes, some 140-odd hours of programs made, so I’m probably forgetting much. Hell, all of ’em are great!
What drew you to the Mythbusters, and what keeps you there?
There’s a saying ... a gig’s a gig. I recall Peter Rees speaking to me while I was in Beyond Productions doing some other docco, and asking me if I want to have a go at a new show - three episodes only - and I’d have to deliver it a bit different to the usual documentary reads. Well, I said, I’ll give it a shot. It got up, and we went from there.
Have you done any other projects we might know about?
I’ve been doing documentaries I’d guess for the past ten years. Some readers may know about include Medical Incredible, many one-offs such as Human Prey, When Anasthesia Fails, and a couple more I love include "When Surgical Instruments Get Left Behind", and I love the name of this one: "You Swallowed What??". Over the years I’ve done work for hundreds of advertisers for the US, Canada, Asia and Australia.
What is your favorite thing about working with the Mythbusters?
Well, it’s more a case of working on Mythbusters, as I’m one of the last things in the production process. All the planning, execution and busting is done well before I get to do anything. But as far as working on MB, it’s a hoot. We have a guffaw or two when putting the narration down, but we aim to give it the right combination of wonderment, excitement, incredulity and, em, derision (mock, of course!) that you’ve come to expect, I guess.
When you’re off camera, do you hang out with the rest of the crew?
Nope. They’re only a few thousand miles away. I’m based in Sydney, the home of the production company, Beyond Productions.
Would you ever appear on Mythbusters?
I have the perfect head for narration. Some could think it’s a bit too much of an "in" joke having me poke my head in, but Dan the producer has a sense of humor, so who knows. Having said that, I did catch a bit of myself in the Airplane on a Conveyor Belt myth, as I was visiting SF for BusterCon 1 at the time.
Do you like the explosions or are you glad you’re not near the blast zone?
Absolutely pleased to be nowhere near them, really. That doesn’t mean that I don’t enjoy a good bang, but it’s often serious stuff and done with absolutely all the safety precautions possible (we can’t have the MB in a tv version of The Running Man, now can we?).
How exactly does one get a job in the voice over business?
I started in radio at 16 and when I realized I had too much of an accent to get anywhere on radio in Australia, I started bothering a guy by the name of Ron Scott at a Sydney voice-over agency for yonks. I think he took pity on me and eventually got me a job doing a post-sync to a tv commercial for Continental Airlines. This was back in the 80s and a couple of thousand voice jobs ago.
What is your favorite quote from the show?
It has to be Adam’s "I reject your reality and substitute my own" and "failure is always an option". These (and others) are part of the MB lexicon. I do have a snicker at "That was so disturbing, let’s see it again. In slow motion." (snicker!). The puns, as sad as some may be, are also a part of the show, now.
How many years have you been working in the voice over business?
Since 1982, but I did my first radio shift at 2JJ in Sydney in 1975. I had to lie about my age to get it (that is, add a couple of years - I was only 17). I subsequently worked around Australia (Albury, Bendigo, Launceston, Canberra, Newcastle) in radio and got an interest in writing and production and voice work.
What is the oddest thing a fan has ever had you sign?
I worked at this radio station where I met someone who had the autographs of all the announcers (including mine) knitted into a woolen jacket. Very strange place to see your signature.
What is one thing about you people don’t know?
Well, I could only ever tell it once. I sat beside Yahoo Serious on a telethon in Newcastle in 83 reading out pledges. He was in a gorilla suit. I had to read his out. Oh, and my sister is a writer of novels of the romance and inspirational varieties. That’s two, but it’s a 2-for-1 day!
What did you do as a job before getting involved with Mythbusters?
Other stuff... I’ve had a few jobs over the years... kitchen work early on, then radio, then marketing, then cd-roms, then website production, then content management... I’m still working "in the web space", dude.
Do you ever get tired of the crew’s corny jokes?
No, because they work really hard at them, and I don’t want to be rude. Seriously, they’re okay, and some of them are real gems.
What’s your favorite TV show?
Gee... Boston Legal is an hour of escape each week for me. And I do like the sci-fi shows.
Do your narrating voice and your real voice sound the same, or do you change it for the show?
I’m a bit more excited on the show than I am normally. I can’t go around saying "Who ARE the Mythbusters?". Having said that, there’s much delivered that’s exactly the way I would say normally.

Hope this is not too much raving, Misty, and thanks again.
Best
Robert
