Received last night, as I feasted on prime rib and bourbon at Big Oil's expense (because when it comes to free food and booze, I am a big old whore with all the moral integrity of a televangelist on crack. But you already knew that...)
"Did you see Eric Grandy's write up for the Music Video? show? He has to be the biggest idiot fuckbag in the history of idiot fuckbags."
My honest reply:
"Nah. I don't read that shit."
I mean, seriously. Back in the old days, we used to have a monthly newspaper called The Rocket that had interviews and articles about local and national entertainers, most of them of the rock n' roll variety. Nowadays, we're left with the eternally limp Seattle Weekly (though I certainly enjoy Hannah's column more often than not, and I thought her Gits article was very well done) and a certain Capitol Hill gossip rag (of which Mr. Grandy is, tragically, the music editor) to cover the bands and venues we frequent.
Damn both publications for making me nostalgic for City Heat and Jimmy St. Bitchen's ramen recipes.
Oy. Anyhoo, of course I had to grab a copy this morning, and here's the preview in question (courtesy of The Stranger.com...
(High Dive) There are several things wrong with the band name Music Video?. The first, obviously, is the extraneous question mark. Readers might not know this, but copy editors are a violently uptight bunch, and all the cute little commas, exclamation points, and question marks in your band names (I'm looking at you !!!, Adult., the Go! Team, etc.) make their lives downright miserable. Secondly, Googling "music video" along with various combination of "Seattle," "band," "MySpace," or what have you elicits nothing so much as WTO protest footage on YouTube, the Wikipedia page for "Grunge," and the MySpace pages of Pearl Jam and Throw Me the Statue. Finally, and this isn't the band's fault, the High Dive calendar page only links to tonight's openers, neither of whom inspire particularly high hopes for the mysterious Music Video?. (See how dumb that band name looks in a proper sentence?)ERIC GRANDY
That's nowhere near as bad as I was afraid it was going to be, though the swipe at the support acts seems pretty bitchy (I think that taking shots at New Music Monday bands is about as ungallant as Rolling Stone's occasional butchering of an unsigned group in their horrific, overly polished review section... why waste the effort crushing a fetal musical attempt when there are so many bloated, overrated acts to deflate?)
Teasing ...music video? about their name is a time-honored Tucson, Arizona tradition that goes back to the days when they were known simply as "Music Video". I thought that Music Video was just about the stupidest name for a band that I'd ever heard, right up there with a Tacoma group my ex-girlfriend used to manage, unfortunately named "The Past". In the end, of course, a band's name is largely inconsequential next to the music they produce.
Here's what the Tucson press says about ...music video? now that they're used to the name... click here.
And here's some national recognition. Click there ===> $$$.
I'm going to renege on my prior blog and encourage everyone to drop by the High Dive at 8 pm to welcome my friends Paul and Wes to Seattle on their first West Coast tour. During the time that Paul was operating ...mv? as a solo act, he was kind enough to open for Iceage Cobra with just a few hours advance notice when their scheduled support act didn't come down from Flagstaff. It would be nice if one or two of the Cobra guys (or their fans) could drop by for a bit to show some love.
In any event, I'll be hanging out at the High Dive on Monday night if you want to say hi. As NadaMucho reported earlier today, my old friend Jason Grimes is taking over as lead talent buyer at that particular Fremont venue, and it's breathtakingly feasible that I just might give him a hand selecting acts for a certain weeknight between Wednesday and Friday.

Category: Music
NadaMucho.com friend and all around great guy Jason Grimes has taken over as lead talent buyer for the High Dive. Jason has been a local music do-gooder for years, having helped notable bands like Black Nite Crash and Thee Emergency and booked/produced countless excellent shows across our fair city.

Fresh Hot Poop on NadaMucho.com
Current mood: sympathetic
I really like that song "Waiting on the Stairs" by Pela. It reminds me of the Constantines, but, you know, not so "Canadian." Augie wrote a review of it that is up now.
Meanwhile, my sister found a list of songs from the back to school dance I scored.
Swingline Festivities 8/2 (Or..What Happens When You Are Too Far Behind on E-mail)
Current mood: loved
Category: Music
…what happens when you are too far behind on e-mail is that you have to wade through all of the totally disposable ones before you can get to anything that matters.
And speking of things that matter, there is Swingline Records' 5 year anniversary and BBQ at the Funhouse tonight, Saturday, August 2, 2008.
In case you don't know anything about anything, here are some reasons to love Swingline:
Vague lists aside, this independent label has one of the best track records around. And by track record, I mean "records you endorsed that were super cool compared to records you endorsed that were not that compelling." And the Swingline's track record is outstanding (I didn't even mention Magneto or the Heavy Hearts)…
These guys are having a party tonight...you should go. While you are there, buy Dan from the Valley a shot. Speaking of shots, if you see any of these guys at the show they should also get a shot or two. After that, ask the Lights why Frank Nieto doesn't return my emails anymore. Then see if those Heavy Hearts guys can give you the recipe to local success.
Here's their words on it.
Hello,
We'll be celebrating the Swingline Records 5 year anniversary with a BBQ at the Funhouse bar this coming Saturday.
The BBQ starts at 6:30 pm and the grill will run until around 8 pm. We'll be serving dogs, brats, a veggie alternative, salads, chips, soda and free PBR.
The show will kickoff around 9:30 pm with MAN the GUNS (Dave Swingline's band), followed by the LIGHTS and then the VALLEY. It should be a great night for bbq, drinks and rock-n-roll.
The Rock n’ Roll Love Child Loves to Rock
Current mood: stoked
Category: Music
The fact the The Rock n' Roll Love Child loves to rock should be fairly obvious to old fans and new readers alike. After all, that's how she earned the name.
For the doubters among you, check out this performance of her third known song, aptly title "I Love to Rock."
Please note:
- The intensity with which she delivers her message.
- The homeade guitar comprised of a Curious George DVD case, three large rubber bands, and a wooden percussion stick for the neck. .

Self-Titled LP

Release date: 1997-05-27
According to the club's talent buyer, this whole King Cobra "for sale" thing was just a symptom of the Seattle music scene's pension for rumor-spreading (present company included.)
Says Joel: " in fact we are not for sale anymore. we've acquired a private investor and we will survive what was essentially a freak out by a silent partner. i apologize for the "scare.""
Disregard the original post.
Owning and operating a club is HARD. Darn hard, apparently.
The folks at King Cobra gave a valiant effort, but, like most small business owners, they apparently don't have time to lose money for a couple years while they figure out how to be successful.
As a result, the club is for sale. Here's hoping someone buys it and keeps building on what they've started, rather than change it in to something sucky.
----
King Cobra, Seattle's new rock & roll nightclub and venue is for sale!
King Cobra is a rock & roll club in a great location, next to the Comet Tavern, and across the street from Neumo's. It has a great sound system, a capacity of 475, and a growing reputation throughout Seattle as a great place to see a live show. We have a waiting list of bands who want to play. And our calendar is currently filling up with more quality shows every day.
King Cobra is currently a venue for live music 3 to 4 nights per week. The remaining 3 or 4 nights can be used for more interactive events that encourage audience participation. These events could include karaoke, rock band contests, game show night, and ssp wrestling. We make good use of the 4 projectors and a flat panel tv.
King Cobra is also open for DANCE CLUB nights, and comes with a complete dance floor lighting system with light jockey computer control system, plus DJ equipment, including Technics Turntables, CDJs, Mixers, and monitors.
The current owners, and some citizens of Seattle, would like to sell King Cobra with it's current format, including a great calendar of upcoming events, and an all-star cast of employees.
We regret that we are forced to sell King Cobra.
The business is for sale because of these reasons: 1. Personal financial issues 2. Management mistakes 3. Lack of experience 4. Lack of marketing
Details:
1. Lease is 12,912.46 for about 6,000 sq. ft 2. Basement "greenroom" or private party room available at 1869 for 1869 square feet. Stairs lead down directly from stage. And there is a direct entrance to greenroom from 10th Street. 3. There are 2 years on the lease, and a 2 1/2 year extension 4. Currently, drink sales are 50,000 per month, but can be more with proper marketing, and as we book concerts with bigger draw. The previous owner did sales of 80,000. 5. Sales numbers are for drinks and food only, not including ticket sales. 6. We are up to date on all taxes and bills. 7. We have a good reputation with the city, the Liquor Control Board, and the police.
8. Sprinkler system installed throughout the building, including basement
9. Fully equipped kitchen included 10. Breaking news: we are now approved for all-ages concerts (bar with I.D.)
11. Asking price is 425,000

So Mary from Waves and countless other Seattle projects has a female Black Sabbath cover band together and they are looking for a new vocalist.
In her words:
We are looking for a FEMALE singer. We do all Ozzy-era Black Sabbath songs, and some of which are not all the hits, but songs that we really like and are fun and rocking. We have gigged at most of the Seattle venues. Here is our show history:
05/12/2006 The Funhouse 07/15/2006 The Rendezvous' Jewel Box Theater 08/08/2006 The Funhouse 09/06/2006 The Sunset Tavern 09/16/2006 The Blue Moon Tavern 12/30/2006 El Corazon
12/20/2007 The Funhouse
02/16/2008 The Monkey Pub 03/24/2008 The Comet Tavern 03/28/2008 The Blue Moon Tavern 04/11/2008 Cafe Venus/Mars Bar 04/19/2008 Bop Street Records 04/23/2008 High Dive 05/23/2008 Sunset Tavern 05/30/2008 Jules Maes Saloon 06/25/2008 Nectar Lounge
We are looking for a strong voiced female singer with a good personality/attitude to front our band. We rehearse only once a week (!) during the week, but have spent many many many hours learning the songs (we have about 20 to choose from) so we want someone that will have the motivation to get up to speed quickly so we can start gigs again as soon as possible once they are ready. We have videos on myspace so you can see/hear the band:
