Today’s Halloween Candy: Vastly Superior

Is it just me or is candy today VASTLY superior to the candy from even 20 years ago? When my friends and I went trick-or-treating, we were lucky to get one or two each among the choicest cuts like Reese's Cups or mini-Snickers bars. The rest was Tootsie Rolls, Now-and-Laters, and Mary Janes -- candy in the loosest sense of the term, merely a cheap sugar delivery device. Were those designed by dentists to rip your teeth right out of your jaw? I'm surprised I survived with my molars intact.
I just walked by a co-worker's tray of leftover Halloween candy. It had Mini-Rice Krispie treats! Are you out of your cotton-pickin' mind? We would NEVER have gotten those when I was a kid. Raisinets? Yeah. Charleston Chews? Ugh, definitely. But Rice Krispie treats? Only if they were hand-made and wrapped in re-used wax paper by the crazy old lady on the corner.

New job at National Wildlife Federation

I've started a new job as Communications Manager for State Outreach with the National Wildlife Federation! I'll be coordinating their local media efforts to make global warming a key campaign issue in 10 swing states. Hopefully it'll be a good way to combine my local news background and communications experience with my tree-hugginess.
