Van Halen - Dance the Night Away
Current mood: naughty
Category: Music

Don't tell me this is not great rock 'n' roll. And don't tell me you're resistant to the spirit and energy in this song. My favorite song from a great band. Dig the "Gloria" quote at the end!

Me? I’ve been up since the late ’70s....
Current mood: exhausted
Category: Life

Sleep? I know not the word, at the mo'. We're closing in on 24 hours with that word not being in my vocabulary, and (to get quite Robin Leach about it) I don't know why. Perhaps it's because I'm once again Judyless.

Yup, the bank account has gotten so arid, I had to once again take a loan against Judy to pay rent and all that. I, at the precise moment of seriously starting a new band, have not a stick of equipment. It is now quite apparent that being an eBay merchant shall bring nothing more than Ye Olde Supplemental Income. Looks like I'm back to being a full-time working stiff, until I've paid off these loans and saved my equipment. Then I can invest in that theoretical t-shirt biz.

Am I sad, bitter, disappointed, depressed? No, that was several nights ago, when it first hit me this would happen, after discovering Mom's intended used book store stock I'd planned to be the cornerstone of my online empire was *ahem* crap. A load of paperback romances and westerns and some weaktoast mysteries, none of which were in particularly sound shape. That is, until I figured out I could unload them for a penny apiece on Amazon Marketplace, and then some. (Look for Judy's Used Books on Amazon. That's me.) Plus there will be another estate sale, soon as I can find someone who'd let me use their yard/garage for said purpose. But I'm not blue, as I now see what's necessary. See? Told you I didn't need meds....

"So, Tim: What do you think about the Republican convention? Or Pete Doherty OD'ing?" Who gives a wet shit, really? I need sleep. And for some of these damned annoying poster collectors to pony up on their purchases, so I can bail out a guitar and amp or two. Maybe then, I can sleep soundly and actually show up for work, now that I need to. Oh, man. And now it's all starting to hit me in the middle of this paragraph. Damn, I bet I'll regret this blog when I wake up. Here's Dave Bowie and his gearfab Spiders, knocking out "Queen Bitch" on The Old Grey Whistle Test from back when I was in 1st grade. See you when I'm alive again....

The Psychedelic Furs - Pretty In Pink (original version)
Current mood: happy
Category: Music

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c08vQ-vUhWI

Accept no substitutes: This is the original video, for the darker, more snarling original recording from the second Furs album, TALK TALK TALK. It was re-recorded for the soundtrack of the John Hughes film of the same name, and was castrated in the process. Enjoy!

A little reminder
Current mood: contemplative
Category: Life

A few days ago, The Damned's wonderful guitarist Captain Sensible saw fit to post a blog reprinting an anti-McCain screed. While I felt the tone was a little too doomsday apocalyptic and not terribly factual, I felt it was great that the good Captain voiced the concerns of non-Americans over a potential McCain presidency. For his trouble, Sensible got an earful from a load of Jr. Birchers in punk rock clothing.

I have noticed a growing number of supposed "punks" around that are so right-wing and jingoistic, it makes me wonder if they ever actually read their Clash lyric sheets. And their belligerence and seemingly proud ignorance, even denial, of how things are is astonishing. They seem to be proud of being such ugly Americans! The general tone they took with Captain is one of , "You're a foreigner! Why are you butting in our affairs? Obama is a closet Muslim who's gonna raise MY TAXES, etc., etc."

You know, it's hard to reason with such thinking. I am a genuine Obama supporter, but I have some problems with the guy, too. I loved his acceptance speech the other night, but the spectacle surrounding it put me off. Don't get me started as to what I really think about what I saw, his speech aside; I might lose a whole lot of friends. I also am worried about a potential McCain presidency, but I don't think he's Darth Vader. I think he's no longer the "plain talking maverick" he presented  in 2000, and has capitulated to Republican orthodoxy to actually have a shot at the White House this time. And this is unhealthy. And women falling in line because Hillary didn't win, and are so easily cowed at Sarah Palin making the VP cut? Are you guys really that easily manipulated?

Look,  I can now see Jello Biafra is wrong: You CANNOT change the minds of the sorts that are loudmouthing across Sensible's blog. They don't listen. They seem to enjoy their ignorance. But I will suggest a quick reminder of what eight years of Republican rule has gotten us:

* Astronomical gas prices.

* A decimated economy.

* The state of our healthcare system steadily declining, getting more expensive by the minute, and in the control of greedmongering insurance companies.

* Social security virtually in collapse.

* Tax cuts for the wealthy and big business, with a heavier burden being placed on a middle-class that is seeing their dollar shrinking dramatically.

* Complete contempt for an endangered environment and ecosystem.

* Complete contempt for foreign relations, to the point where our nation is now HATED by the rest of the world. A world we still live in, by the way.

* A war without end, predicated upon lies about "weapons of mass destruction," and a despot's non-existent role in 9/11, and continuing to be run the same way even when all evidence suggests the plan is failing. Oh, and by the way, we let the cats ACTUALLY responsible for those attacks SLIP RIGHT THROUGH OUR FINGERS. They are STILL AT LARGE.

* Continual evidence that the supposedly highly moral and Christian Republican members of Congress may get up to more debauchery and amorality than the days of Caligula and the Rolling Stones' 1972 Tour Of The Americas and any given Led Zeppelin tour combined...as they predicate policy upon these "morals" they supposedly uphold.

* Erosion of human rights and civil liberties.

* And by the way, to hell with the rights of non-causcasians, non-heterosexuals, and non-males. And let's chip away at the latter's reproductive and health issues, shall we?

Finally, let me remind you of something else: When Bill Clinton left office, our economy was strong, our budget was balanced, and America enjoyed a BUDGET SURPLUS (NOT DEFICIT) for the first time EVER in its' history. Within six months of Bush swearing in, that surplus was gone. And a new deficit had replaced it. And continues to grow unchecked.

These are the facts. Not "the liberal media conspiracy" talking. (And that so-called "liberal media" seems to be falling all over themselves to love up on McCain, these days. NOT Obama.)

Now, how do you feel about a candidate who states time and again that he will continue the policies that has created all these facts? That he SUPPORTS these policies?

Go right ahead. Vote for John McCain. And just prove how bad a job the American education system now provides. Thank you.

It’s "Pata Pata" Time!
Current mood: frisky
Category: Music

Maybe it's due to listening to this archive of Joe Strummer's "London Calling" BBC radio series (thanks, Charlie In Denver), but jams like this have become my idea of a dance party. This is Miriam Makeba, the first lady of South African song, on Brazilian TV in 1968, doing her biggest hit, "Pata Pata." If this doesn't put the itch in your hips, you're just dead.

How does it feel...?
Current mood: exhausted
Category: Life

Right now, it feels like I was hit by a Mack truck. Oh, these first two rehearsals have depleted me! I hurt everywhere. My hair feels like it hurts. The two Advil I took aren't helping. Damn, I don't recall it being this hard before. I'm crawling back to bed. I'm useless today....
