Progress Day at Beckman Mill - Saturday May 3rd
Current mood: dorky
Category: Travel and Places

Progress Day at Beckman Mill (2007)

It's another year, and a new spring (finally!), and time for another season kick-off event - Progress Day - on May 3rd at the Beckman Mill, just west of Beloit, off Hwy 81.

Easy directions:

Just go out Liberty Avenue (Hwy 81), until the road curves right a little past Paddock Road.  There's a left turn there, at the curve. That's West Mill Pond Road and it will take you directly to the parking lot next to Beckman Mill.

If you're riding a bike, and don't mind the rather scary ride out on  Liberty, this is the easiest route to get the Mill on bicycle. If you want a better ride, less traffic and prettier scenery, take St. Lawrence Avenue all the way out and go right when you reach County H. (see map below).

Here's to beautiful weather and hoping we see you there!

RAW to JPG
Current mood: nauseated
Category: Art and Photography

The first frame is an example of Canon digital RAW photo (12-bit color .CR2), which was then converted using Canon Digital Photo Pro in second frame (lossless 8-bit .JPG), and then with further enhancements (3rd frame) using Google’s Picasa 3.

Initially used DPP to edit and convert. Enhancing the contrast, brightness,  saturation, sharpness and color balance, and then cropping the frame. The jpg created was lossless.

From that version, I used Picasa 3 to further enhance brightness/contrast, adding a little more saturation (probably too much), and putting a graduated tint to darken the background.

The Doctor was In
Current mood: sick
Category: Life

We had a good experience with going to NorthPointe Health Center today.

North Point Health Care Facility

We chose NorthPointe because it was impossible to get in at West Side Medical since their 2nd Doctor left. Because both facilities are part of Beloit Memorial Hospital, our records and history are easily accessible.

Nice place... I encourage everyone in the area to try it out... Esp. my Staples associate friends... they really know how to work with CIGNA benefits... making it nice and easy!

It turns out I didn't have the flu, I have strep and scarlatina, and now Suzie has early stages of strep, too. (Apparently someone at work had strep very recently, but I only became aware of it today, when I called in.) I've never had strep before, so this was a new experience for me.  (I remember Ad having it when he was young and Suzie and I ended up on antibiotics then as precaution.)

The moment the nice Doctor at NorthPointe said Strep and Scarlet, I looked at Suzie and he said, he'd put us both on antibiotic. Sharp as a tack, I tell ya!

Now... I need to talk to someone down there about promoting local pride through the use of area photos and...

Neighbor's Garage Destroyed in Fire
Category: News and Politics

Fully Engulfed

This is what I woke up to at 2:30 am.  Well, not exactly... What I really woke up to was my wife running around yelling about "Dennis' barn is burning down!" The sound of the roof collapsing probably woke her. I have a later shot that shows a propane tank exploding, but it's pretty blurred.

As seen from the window next to my computer in our dining room about 10 minutes after wife woke me up (and after I got off the phone with 911) when I woke up enough to realize I have 2 cameras sitting next to me on the desk!

Forgot to change settings though... it was set for WB=cloudy from earlier on Saturday's walk. Actually, the battery and CF card were both out of camera so I had to reload everything before I could take this shot. Camera's clock is an hour off for some reason.

It's pretty obvious the fire started in back corner (left), near the wood burner stove/heater.

A future new toy?
Current mood: geeky
Category: Web, HTML, Tech

I'm growing very fond of the Asus Eee 7" laptop:

Asus Eee PC 4G Surf Notebook - Black
- 900MHz Intel Celeron M 353  , 512MB DDR2, 4GB SSD, Linux, 7" LCD -

Description: Personal computing has never been so portable, or so affordable. The new EeePC, a joint venture between Intel and Asus, is designed to be your constant companion and your elegant yet affordable introduction to computing. Weighing in at only 2 pounds, with a compact and highly-readable seven-inch display, the EeePC is perfect little assistant. Running on a customized Linux operating system, it responds far more speedily than its Windows counterparts, but it'll run Windows XP quite happily, if you like. The EeePC offers two types of intuitive interface, to let you choose how you want to use it. Using either the "Easy" or full desktop mode, you can use the built-in WLAN connectivity to communicate on the run, share photos from your trip before you get home, or do almost anything else online. Flash storage keeps the weight low – without a hard drive, this micro-monster weighs in at 0.89 kilograms . . . that's less than two pounds!

And it's actually something I can afford!  Can you imagine that?
