So, I was coming home from the bar tonight, after watching the Cubs win (YAY!), and I saw this guy throw away something on the ground, right outside my apartment building. I said, "Litter bug!"He turned around to look at me, as if he was challenging me. I said, "You heard me! Litter Bug! You're going to throw your trash on the ground?!" His girlfriend also looked at me like I was nuts; she was on her cell phone, and said through a bit of rough English, "There's other trash on the ground!" As if that was some excuse. I said, "So?!You're going to contribute to that?! Care about the environment! Care about the future! You can't take your trash up a flight of stairs?!"I felt good that I'd said something. I felt good that I wasn't just going to see it and take it. They were probably in their late 20's/early 30's, and probably were never reprimanded before; it probably never even occurred to them. I hope they understood that littering is NOT okay. "Take it to the trash," I said. I am so baffled and livid at the way people take things for granted, world-wide! The world is not your trash can. Seriously; just because others are doing wrong, that makes you all right?! YOU have control over YOUR ACTIONS. MAKE YOUR ACTIONS RESPONSIBLE! Care. It's not just about you or me. It's about everyone else who sees what we do, including children, who mimic us, or say with a shrug, "Well, everyone else does it." Is THAT an excuse?! C'mon, REALLY. We're in this world together, like it or not. Care about it.

What do they want from me? You see only what you see. You do not know me. Since when have I become Beautiful? Is a curse A gift in disguise? Shadows seem to tell more Truth than the face I hide behind. Purple water, Draped by night, parts For fluorescent park lights. This water gurgles. I cough; eyes wide. Afraid to go outside.
c) November 1997
This was written during a time of my life when I was battling image and internal feelings. I couldn't understand why I was only accepted if I acted a certain way. That 'certain way' did me no favors, and certainly did not bring me any closer to myself. In fact, for a while, I pushed others away, just with my own discomfort of being labeled, or pursued, or judged, or used. I grew up a rare redhead, I had difficulties with my weight, and I'd been "a nerd," so when being met with attraction, I doubted it, and questioned "attraction's" validity. I wrote this when I was out on my own for a mere 3 months, no longer having to fight the previous environment, yet no longer knowing what I had in me - without that fight, and what I could trust. This is a poem included in "Loveless in a Lonesome World" quite about questioning, despair, and re-awakening. =)
Yes, they are very scary, but can also be beautiful! Amy Marx is a brilliant painter who captures storms & water in her art. Check it out if you're interested -- www.amymarx.com
Re-post. The original was disconnected, but this performance is worth re-broadcasting! Best to all performers involved, this truly is my favorite live performance ever recorded, and I hope it will always be available to see.
I'll be doing my first featured reading next Tuesday and am completing the first draft of a sci-fi screenplay I'm co-writing entitled "Carriers." My producer friend, Jonathan, is hoping to land a distribution deal in December, which of course, will make it easier to finance this indie production. Please send good vibes our way. =)
I hope all is well with all of you & drop me a note to let me know how you're doing!! Will be in touch!
