shows coming up -- ny, dc, f-burg, philly (maybe?)

hello all...

so if you noticed they're a couple more shows up. one at the BLACK CAT OCT 16 (and i think we might need another band if anyone's interested), and one at an obama rally in FREDERICKSBURG, VA OCT 18. we have a hold on a date at the khyber in philly oct 19th, but nothing's confirmed. we also need a philly band for that date, so if you are a philly band, or know a philly band, please contact me! i need you. badly.

hopefully y'all can make it out to one of those. i love you. each and every one. also, i love caffeine.

the reason i deleted the demos...

ok so there's a reason i deleted the new demos, for those of you that were keeping up with these sort of things...  i realized that basically the songs weren't finished products, and it really wasn't the time to be putting them up for public scrutiny.  not that i wasn't getting back great feedback -- i was -- but the next time i post something, i want it to be as close to the finished song as i can make it.  for my own peace of mind, as well as for a more accurate representation of what i'm trying to accomplish musically here in the coming months.

that being said, i just got back from another couple of days in new york, and i'm happy to announce that i've so far finished (that's right, FINISHED) tracking 6 songs out of the 14 total we're gonna track for the next album, JUNE.  looks like 3 of those songs are gonna get mixed and mastered for a demo thing in the coming couple of weeks.  once those are finished, i will post them.  they'll be close enough to the real thing to assuage any concerns i might have about their done-ness.  so look forward to that.

also -- drum roll, please -- it's just been confirmed that i have a show.  a SHOW!  it'll be my first in like a half a year.  and it's gonna be in new york, at BAR MATCHLESS in greenpoint, brooklyn on OCTOBER 2ND.  for all my DC kids, i'm sorry.  there's a show in the works for the black cat, just nothing's been confirmed yet.  that'll hopefully be in mid-october.  also, for all my FREDERICKSBURG peeps -- looks like there's an FAA show in the works for OCTOBER 18th, i believe.  i'll keep you updated as soon as adam gets me the details.

alright, that's enough info for one post.  hope everyone's doing well.  take care,

paul michel

shout out to andrew black of the explosion and georgie james for doing the drums on "hanging on". i could never have actually played that...

recording schedule/that which is already recorded
Category: Music

so i'm bored in front of the computer and actually want to write something. this never happens. figured i'd write about the recording schedule and some of the songs we've been working on for the next album, "june" (used to be called "amy isn't dead", though that album is still in the works [even though the album format is as dead as cassettes])....

so last month i went up to nyc to do a weekend in the studio with my friend andrew schneider, who mixed and recorded drums and cello for the last record. andrew's this amazing dude i met through mike ushinski who used to play in this band called barbaro (yes, like the horse that won the kentucky derby last year) with him. mike's been playing drums for me for the last 3 years, and he's one of the most rad dudes you'll ever meet. so andrew, mike, and fellow co-conspirators tracy epperson and sean davenport joined forces at andrew's studio translator audio to lay down some drum and bass tracks for this next album. mike (drums) and tracy (bass) nailed 7 songs. as follows:

1. brand new car: a song about the ideal place to regroup. mine is at the beach in winter by myself.
2. hanging on: this is about the human ability to continue dreaming in the face of insurmountable odds. irrationality allows us all to continue. thank goodness. few choices that i make, make sense.
3. heart as an empty room: this title is apparently also a death cab for cutie song title. whoops. i have no pop cultural compass. nicknamed the 'cancun beach week '08' song, this has little to do with death cab in both style and lyrics. mostly because this song still has no lyrics.
4. lately: another paul michel song about insecurity. i need more song fodder. also, it's in 3. which makes it more sad than 4. and not as prog as 5. (that's music humor. it's ok if you don't laugh. it means you probably have more friends).
5. new (song): anthemic and hopeful. if you've been to any of the shows i've played with a band in the last year, it's been our first or second song in the set.
6. run/wait: about the frenetic pace of 'modern' life. mostly about me having too much shit to do all the time.
7. statues: the chorus is about people standing around at shows with their arms crossed. no one really cares any more. not sure if its 'cuz we're too cool, or no longer able. the demo for this song is posted on the myspace site, 3rd one down. the finished product is gonna be so much better...

new demos are up...

god it's been a while since i've written here. a lots been going on, even if doesn't look like it on the myspace page. been doing a ton of recording -- even got up to nyc to do the first installment of what looks to be many for the new album. so to appease anybody out there that wants to hear more of the new stuff, i've posted a couple more demos to the site. please take a listen. at least my drumming's getting better...

song 1: 'say you will'... upbeat rocker a la something that broken social scene would do if they weren't so damn arty. subject matter: what it means to grow old with friends. happy.

song 2: 'am i being lazy'... kinda pretty song in 3. check out how high my voice goes at the end. i'm pretty proud i didn't blow an o ring. subject matter: none of your damn business...

shoot me a message sometime, whoever you are...

Its a video Ryan Poe made of 'Alone All Day' at a recent Fredericksburg All Ages show. It's really pro, and Ryan did an amazing job. A huge shout out to Ryan for doing this. And another to FAA for always being such a great host. And of course, a heartfelt thanks to the kids in F-burg. You guys are absolutely amazing!

Statues Demo up...

Hello!!!

Check it out. New demo for the album coming out later this year. It's the first song on the myspace page, should start playing automatically. As always, remember this is a demo, and as such is subject to any number of things, including (but not limited to): my shitty drum playing abilities, bad recording technique, i have yet to hear it on real speakers (only my headphones), and vocal takes that need editing....

That in mind, I love this song and can't get it out of my head to save my life. I hope you like it...

Love,

Paul
