Submission call: BEST NEW TALES OF THE APOCALYPSE (reprint anthology)
Category: Writing and Poetry

Best New Tales of the Apocalypse

Edited by D.L. Snell & Bobbie Metevier

Submission Guidelines

Editors D.L. Snell and Bobbie Metevier are now reading for Permuted Press' 1st volume of Best New Tales of the Apocalypse.  This is a reprint anthology exclusively for material first published in 2007.  We are interested in short stories and novellas from all genres--horror, science fiction, mystery, romance, etc.--which feature an impending apocalypse, occurrence of the apocalypse, or a post-apocalyptic setting.  If in doubt, send it.

The submission period begins immediately and will close June 1, 2008. Payment will be one contributor's copy, plus $0.01/word (USD) based on the editors' final word count from Microsoft Word (rounded to the nearest hundred words). Stories should be sent in their originally published form--do not rewrite the story before submitting.  Send as an attachment to apocalypticstories@gmail.com in either .DOC or .RTF format.  Include in the body of the email:

  • The full title of the story and a brief synopsis (we're primarily interested in what makes your tale fit this anthology)
  • The publication title, date of publication, and publisher of publication where story appeared (web link to publication and/or publisher information would also be helpful)
  • A 50- to 100-word author bio (optional)

Submissions should be no more than 25,000 words by word-processor count, and must be in standard manuscript format: one-inch margins on all sides, Courier New font, underline for italics, double-spaced, etc.

Final selections will be made no later than September 2008. Do not expect a response unless your work is accepted for publication.

Questions should be addressed to apocalypticstories@gmail.com.

Join authors D.L. Snell, Ryan C. Thomas, John Sunseri, and David Dunwoody as they fire four more rounds into the growing horde of living dead…

The dead are rising in Aruba, and Vince has just made off with a couple million in mob money. As if mob hit men and rotting corpses weren't bad enough, the big trouble is the creatures in the water—the ones who only come onto shore at night...

A man with the ability to call objects into existence awakens in a zombie-swarmed alley with no memory of his past. Aided by a duo of heroes—one incredibly strong, the other psychic—he digs to uncover his identity and the source of his gift in a nightmarish landscape infested with mysterious creatures.

Three art students on a working vacation at an isolated New England college make a terrible discovery… The rustic setting seems to be perfect inspiration, but their lives are quickly consumed by the ghastly legacy of what lives beneath the nearby cemetery.

It's not the sight of the walking dead that scares CIA agent Rhonda White. It's the fact that someone is controlling them—someone whose new bio-weapon is up for bid on the black market. And if Rhonda doesn't stop it, the world will never be the same…

Pre-order now at just $14.95 and get free shipping!

"Snell, Thomas, Sunseri, and Dunwoody lay waste to the old zombie traditions and throw one hell of a party at the end of the world!"

EVERY SIGH, THE END: A Schizophrenic Zombie Novel by Jason S. Hornsby (out now!)
Category: Writing and Poetry

Every Sigh, The End
A Schizophrenic Zombie Novel by Jason S. Hornsby

Ross Orringer is feeling a little paranoid. Watchers--some in radiation suits--take notes and discreetly videotape him on the street. His apartment is bugged. His mom has a stack of family videos that weren't filmed by the family. He's having memories of things that haven't happened yet. Ross very well may be insane.

The stage is set, the living dead are in place, and the director just yelled "Action!" Ross is playing the lead role in the apocalypse, but it's like nothing anyone has ever imagined.

Available for purchase now from many stores including:

"Jason Hornsby's Every Sigh, The End may be the best zombie novel I have read. It feels like a grand truth is peeking through the enigmatic and conspiratorial fog that suffuses the novel. It all seems to mean something…"
—Devon Kappa, None May Say

Pre-order HISTORY IS DEAD (zombie anthology) edited by Dr. Kim Paffenroth now!
Category: Writing and Poetry

This December join Bram Stoker Award-winner Dr. Kim Paffenroth on his journey to discover the secret history of the living dead... History Is Dead includes pre-20th century zombie tales from Bram Stoker Award-winner Jonathan Maberry, Scott Johnson, Joe McKinney, Derek Gunn, and many others.

Pre-order here for $14.95 (includes free shipping in the USA!).

"History Is Dead is a violent and bloody tour through the ages. Paffenroth has assembled a vicious timeline chronicling the rise of the undead that is simultaneously mindnumbingly savage and thought provoking."
—Michael McBride, author of the God's End trilogy and The Infected

About History Is Dead:
Our team of crack historians has uncovered the truth you never learned in school: the living dead have walked among us since the dawn of time. In this collection of gruesome tales from throughout the ages, the ravenous undead shamble through bloody battlefields, plague-ridden cities, genteel country estates, and dusty frontier towns. They emerge from foggy cemeteries, frozen barrows, loamy bogs, cursed mines, and gore-spattered operating rooms to prey on the living.

But these zombies don't just eat people. They help painters and writers save their faltering careers. They unwittingly push humankind on the quest for fire. They topple evil capitalists and their corporate empires. They fight crime. They fall in love.

Join us on a journey into our zombie-filled past... Neither history nor the living dead have ever been this interesting!

Includes excavated tales from:

  • Jonathan Maberry
  • Scott Johnson
  • Joe McKinney
  • Derek Gunn
  • Christine Morgan
  • David Dunwoody
  • Leila Eadie
  • Jenny Ashford
  • James Roy Daley
  • Linda Donahue

Internet sensation JOHN DIES AT THE END now available in print!
Category: Writing and Poetry

The word-of-mouth phenomenon read online by over 50,000 readers is now available in print!

Telling the story now, I'm tempted to say something like, "Who would have thought that John would help bring about the end of the world?" I won't say that, though, because most of us who grew up with John thought he would help end the world somehow.

It's a drug that promises an out-of-body experience with each hit. On the street they call it Soy Sauce, and users drift across time and dimensions. But some who come back are no longer human. Suddenly a silent otherworldly invasion is underway, and mankind needs a hero. What it gets instead is John and David, a pair of college dropouts who can barely hold down jobs. Can these two stop the oncoming horror in time to save humanity? No. No, they can't.

Read the entire novel online at JohnDiesattheEnd.com!

Available for purchase now from many stores including:

"John Dies at the End is one of the funniest books I've ever read, with a joke--or jokes--on almost every one of its 358 completely-freakin'-insane pages. The whole thing feels like author David Wong is making it up as he goes along, but yet the payoffs are satisfying and there's a hilariously crazed logic throughout. Immensely entertaining and very highly recommended."
--Jeff Strand, author of The Sinister Mr. Corpse

ROSES OF BLOOD ON BARBWIRE VINES by D.L. Snell is available now!
Category: Writing and Poetry

Hello everyone,

Permuted Press' latest zombie vs vampires novel Roses of Blood on Barbwire Vines by D.L. Snell is now officially available from many booksellers including:

Roses of Blood tells the harrowing tale of an enclave of vampires breeding human livestock in a post-apocalyptic world overrun with the living dead. But the dead are just now evolving into something far more lethal, something with tentacles--and that's just the beginning!

"Violent and visceral and yet also unexpectedly beautiful and erotic, Snell's debut novel is a non-stop tirade of horrific, nightmare images, a startling vision of the remains of the human race trapped between two of the greatest evils ever to scar the face of the planet. With hordes of deadly zombies on one side and an incredibly powerful army of vampires on the other, mankind's days are numbered."
