Grrrr...

Now I'm not one to get jealous of other peoples success, far from it! I love to see local talent make something of themselves and represent the youth of Portsmouth, regardless of tastes, genre or dress-sense. One thing I can't stand is the current state of affairs regarding local music scenesters.
There's two types of local scenester dominating and infecting Portsmouth at the moment, the first is your "cosmopolitan" Indie king/queen, as follows...
You've got to be an NME scenester-wannabe with your Topman jacket, H&M accesories or "One-off vintage chelsea boots from a charity shop in Camden" and a big floppy fringe, (think Emo meets early noughties Indie) and sing about clothes, charity shops in Camden, eating poo and other such irrelevant topics. How arty! Nice one, you're ten years behind London! Surely THAT should wake this generation of kids up from their apathetic slumber...

Secondly, you've got your "I'm cooler than you" Metal elitist...
Wearing black all over is essential, being a student is also a must, but these things aren't the real gripes, they're just aesthetic addages (please understand, I'm not slating people who wear black or pursue good education).
You have to listen to nothing but the hardest of hardcore Metal, all the time because anything else is just plain wrong. To smile is a sin, as is to be happy. Heaven forbid that you actually communicate in a non-sarcastic way with anyone who isn't Metal! This will get you shunned from your cliquey band of brothers and sisters. If you're from Portsmouth and in a Metal band, you have to play 80s-style cock-rock riffs and waggle your tongue around like a sex-starved Klingon otherwise you just don't cut the cheese. It is your duty to hate, slate and stamp out all that is not Metal! You are the pinnacle of society - you are right, everyone else doesn't exist!

There you have it, that pretty much sums up the local scene. These are the types of scenester "running" Portsmouth's music scene right now and it's such a shame. If you're in a band with a real message, wanting to change things for the better then forget it! If you want to have a good time with people you can trust who are all there to reach a common goal, forget that too, you'll be stabbed in the back quicker than you can say Lyle & Scott Cardigan!
What happened to truth, poetry and REAL rock & roll?

Cliquey Portsmouth...
Current mood: annoyed

What is it with Portsmouth's music scene? It seems you have to suck cock to get any kind of recognition from the so-called "promoters" on the local circuit. We like to meet new people, make friends, be ourselves but we never kiss anyones arse. We turn up, play our music, watch, ingest and appreciate the other bands on the bill, have a good time, rub shoulders with those involved, then go home, safe in the knowledge that we've entertained to the best of our ability. We don't lick arse or pretend to be something we're not. Rock & Roll isn't about pretensiousness, mainstream or conforming to standards, it's about truth, poetry and having fun. All these little "boy bands in disguise" nowadays piss me off - "let's form an Indie-rock band, chicks dig those" or - "let's be like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and be really un-conventional"...   Bollocks! Just be yourselves, keep it real and maybe you'll get somewhere without having to give verbal head to anyone!

Peace.
