Johannemann was a part-time janitor assigned to clean rest rooms in the north tower on 9/11 and was, indeed, credited with saving a man.
His family says that day changed him, that he became withdrawn and began drinking heavily, falling in and out of work.
Twelve days before the seventh anniversary of the day he saved a life, Johannemann took his own.
The police then vouchered another letter, the suicide note the 43-year-old wrote on Sunday afternoon, shortly before the 5 p.m. deadline his landlord had set for him to vacate for nonpayment of rent.
"The reason I killed myself was 'cause I was getting evicted and I can't handle being homeless. I also am very depressed since I was in 9/11. I've been drinking way too much and it's ruined my life. I've lost friends and family over drinking and I'm very lonely. There is nothing left for me to be happy about other than my cat. Sounds weird, but it's true. I just wanted to say sorry 2 any people I ever hurt in my life. I really was a good person when I wasn't drinking. I hope people remember that!

On a separate sheet was a plea: "Please find my cat a home. His name is Papa-Boy and he's a very special cat. "
The police brought Papa-Boy to the 122nd Precinct stationhouse on Staten Island. The tabby was trembling when one of Johannemann's cousins, Gerald Maya, picked him up. Maya also collected Johannemann's cell phone. He dialed every number in it to pass on the tragic news.
"Everybody I called on his cell phone said, 'I would have given him the money. The guy was beautiful.'" Maya said Wednesday. "Nothing bad on this man. "
Maya had offered Johannemann a place to stay, as had another cousin who lived nearby. Johannemann had declined.
"I really can't tell you why," Maya said.
The other cousin, Joseph Maya, spoke of the Johannemann before 9/11; a man who seemed content in his work and who delighted in his extended family.
"He had a job and he was happy," Joseph Maya said.
Johannemann often said he might have been killed on 9/11 had he not stopped to get a cup of coffee just before the plane hit.
Otherwise, he might have been on an elevator when a jet crashed and flaming fuel poured down the shaft.
Instead, he was waiting for an elevator when he heard a huge bang and the doors burst open. A man tumbled out on fire and Johannemann helped him to an ambulance.
"He was burned up bad but he was still alive," Johannemann told People magazine.
In the aftermath, Johannemann appeared on the "Jenny Jones Show" and received the letter from the White House. Privately, the hero became a reclusive alcoholic.
"He just started backing away and not bothering with anyone," Joseph Maya recalled.
He avoided family, even on the holidays he had always loved. He seemed convinced he was friendless and alone.
"He said he had nobody, but meanwhile everybody loved him," Joseph Maya said.
In May, he moved into a single room on Rome Ave. He landed a job as a custodian at a Manhattan museum two weeks ago, but he had fallen two months behind on his rent. The landlord, Anthony Mallazzi, told him to be out by 5 p.m. Sunday.
As the deadline neared, one of Mallazzi's sons heard a sound like a popping paper bag. Mallazzi arrived home soon afterward and went to see if his tenant had moved out. The door was open.
"I said, 'Kenny? Kenny?'" Mallazzi recalled.
Mallazzi entered and saw Johannemann. Nearby lay the two letters, the one on White House stationery and the suicide note.
"He was a 9/11 hero," Mallazzi said Wednesday. "He saved a person on 9/11. "
Mallazzi paused.
"Who the hell's to blame?" Mallazzi said. "I feel a little guilty. Everybody feels a little guilty. "
On Wednesday, Johannemann was waked at a Brooklyn funeral home.
Papa-Boy was at the cousin's house, cowering in corners, but beginning to venture out.

Along with millions of others, I watched the events of 9/11 unfold with disbelief and horror. I was home with my wife when the first tower collapsed. She turned to me and asked if a collapse was an eventuality that I as a veteran firefighter would have expected. I told her it was not only unexpected, but startling. What was even more startling was to watch both towers crumble into dust, and later, tower number 7, also go down at free fall speed, collapsing basically into it's own footprint. Over the years I'd seen a number of buildings collapse due to fire, all wooden structures, but none collapsed at free fall speed. How much more resistance would a steel‑framed building provide?
I had just finished writing a novel in which a conflagration burned unchecked in Seattle's tallest skyscraper, the 78‑story Columbia Tower, and because of my research, I knew for a fact that no steel‑framed building had ever collapsed due to fire, no matter how long that fire burned. In my novel the remnants of Seattle's tallest building had ended up in a severe tilt. Nothing in my research indicated there was reason to go any further..
There was a lot going .. 9/11. The news stories continued to pile up while the country gradually pieced together what happened that day, or what we thought happened. In early 2002 Vertical Burn was published and I did a two‑week author's tour for Ballantine Books. Every day I talked to crowds who were eager for the opportunity to discuss 9/11 with a working firefighter. The most frequent comment was, "Those New York firefighters were so brave. Going into those buildings when they knew they were going to fall down." My reply: "Of course they were brave. But they weren't idiots. There was one simple reason none of them believed the buildings were going to collapse: no steel‑framed building had ever collapsed due to fire. Ever. They didn't going into those buildings thinking they were headed for certain death. They went in to evacuate people and to put the fires out.."
Listen to the radio reports from the firefighters that day. Look at the holes the planes put into the towers. Check out how much heat it takes to compromise steel compared to how much could have been generated by jet fuel fires. Observe how much smoke was coming from those buildings just prior to each collapse. There were people standing in the holes waving for help. And yet, the popular notion is that the buildings had uncontrollable fires and that those fires caused the buildings to collapse..
There were witnesses in the openings caused by the aircraft impacts and those witnesses were telling us something. They were telling us the fires were largely quelled. If fires didn't bring those three buildings down, what did?
I too, watched the NOVA special and for a while some of my questions seemed as if they had answers. Then I found the 9/11 for truth web sites run by engineers, architects and pilots and began watching videos and reading. The White House and U. S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) are urging Americans to return to the stone age for their own safety..
"After discovering that 'thermal expansion' of steel from a low-temperature fire led to the collapse of World Trade Center building 7," said NIST spokesperson Noh Wei, "we started realizing that other metal objects might also be at risk"..
So NIST scientists tested other metallic objects using state-of-the-art computer models. The models predicted that every oven and barbeque in the country could disintegrate at any time, leading to a progressive collapse of entire houses..
"We also determined that car engines, airplane engines, and boat engines could all suddenly fail due to thermal expansion," said Wei. "Indeed, we soon realized that almost all industrial processes could lead to catastrophic failure, other than, perhaps, those used in freezers.."
White House spokesman Phil Johnson agreed, saying
"Once you understand this principle of thermal expansion, you start to realize that even household showerheads and faucets are dangerous. The hot water flowing through them could wreak havoc. The President is committed to leading the way back to a safer time, and a return to proven, traditional materials - which may not be flashy like metal - but remain rock-solid even when warm.."

Sunlight can warm up metal. Therefore, no metal should be used where any sun exposure is possible..
If people choose to continue using metal, we urge them to live underground, to protect against the dangers of sunlight..
The term synchronicity defines a series of events that seem to be meaningfully connected. Carl Jung described synchronicity as the "acausal connecting principle" -- i.e. a pattern of connection that cannot be explained by traditional laws of cause and effect. Most everyone has witnessed "coincidences" ranging from the mundane to extraordinary, but the question is, are they JUST coincidences, or do they speak for something larger?
The question of synchronicity dovetails with many other intriguing hypotheses, including a holographic model of the universe, ESP, precognition, and a host of other extrasensory and "paranormal" phenomena that have yet to be recognized or understood by mainstream science. Maravich collapsed and died of a heart attack after playing exactly ten years in the NBA. He was 40 years old.
A pathologically incurious, self-described "skeptic" who hears of this might instantly react, "So what? Coincidences happen everyday." Of course, that is true. But it is simply NOT RATIONAL to blindly assert that every so-called "coincidence" that permeates our lives is without meaning. More and more human beings are exploring reality from a more holistic premise. The purely materialistic view of the Universe has lost credibility in the eyes of many, because it does not reflect the world we live in (most of us, anyway).
In a previous multimedia presentation, we discussed the research of Dr. Rupert Sheldrake, and the abundance of evidence for "interspecies telepathy" and psychic powers of animals. No narrow, materialistic, self-described "skeptic" can explain how a pet, separated from its family, can traverse hundreds or even thousands of miles over unfamiliar ground to return to its loved ones. And yet, countless well-documented accounts exist of animals doing precisely that. But HOW? It is stupid, incurious, and unforgivably lazy to not seek to know the meaning behind such mysteries. And yet most self-described "skeptics" have never really wondered if any meaning is even there.

I only ask that the viewer refrain from negative, knee-jerk reactions without a moment or two of circumspection. And since this presentation deals with "coincidences" in Hollywood movies, consider for a moment this quote from Mel Gibson's character in the M. Knight Shyamalan movie "Signs," and ask yourself -- which type of person are you?
"People break down into two groups when the experience something lucky. Group number one sees it as more than luck, more than coincidence. They see it as a sign, evidence, that there is someone up there, watching out for them. Group number two sees it as just pure luck. Just a happy turn of chance. I'm sure the people in Group number two are looking at those fourteen lights in a very suspicious way. For them, the situation isn't fifty-fifty. Could be bad, could be good. But deep down, they feel that whatever happens, they're on their own. And that fills them with fear. Yeah, there are those people. But there's a whole lot of people in the Group number one. When they see those fourteen lights, they're looking at a miracle. And deep down, they feel that whatever's going to happen, there will be someone there to help them. And that fills them with hope. See what you have to ask yourself is what kind of person are you? Are you the kind that sees signs, sees miracles? Or do you believe that people just get lucky? Or, look at the question this way: Is it possible that there are no coincidences?"

Scott Forbes reported a "power down" for approximately 36 hours in the South Tower of the World Trade Center the weekend (8th to 9th) prior to September 11th 2001. The "power down" conditions meant that for the floors his company Fiduciary Trust operated in (floors 90 and 94-97) there was no electricity - meaning CCTV cameras were out of operation and security doors were unlocked. Despite contacting the 911 Commission through their website and by mail Scott was never acknowledged or contacted.
