Shark Movies! Just when you thought it was safe...
Category: Movies, TV, Celebrities
By Amanda Reyes
Did you just miss Shark Week on Discovery Channel? That's okay, because we've got what you need. People have always been fascinated with sharks, although film audiences may not have recognized that until 1974 when Steven Spielberg's Jaws was released. The film was so popular that the term 'blockbuster' was coined to define its chartbusting success. Since then, many filmmakers have tried their hand at undersea terror. The stories generally remained the same, even if the creatures changed. Piranha 2, for example, follows the blueprint of Jaws almost verbatim but instead we get tiny but toothy flying fish. OK, so that one didn't really work out (but don't misunderstand me - I love that movie!) and truth be told, it was the shark movies people kept coming back to. Jaws itself spawned 3 sequels and countless rip-offs that continue to this day. As we are delineating ourselves to 2 on the food chain, why not sink your teeth into some of the best, and worst, shark movies ever imprinted cell-u-loid?

What’s new, Pussycat?
Category: Movies, TV, Celebrities
Many of you, I am sure, have asked yourselves, "What's new with Pretty-Scary? I see this myspace profile, but what's it all about?" Well, let me direct you to a few things. Firstly, check out the interview with Tiffany Shepis on the site (click her name). And more links, check out Grace Lee, Lori Petty, and many others! (New hint, click everything that makes your mouse turn into a "hand" or words that have a line underneath. These are links, they will take you to the actual website! WAH-LAH! Cool stuff, yeah?) Also, don't pass up seeing the Gal of the day.
The forums are a popular hang out, if I must sound like a salesperson, then so be it. I would check them out because there are classified postings, general fun chats that happen, and some really awesome people hang out there. I'm telling you, if you have the time it would be your frown-turned-upside-down kind of time.
Things to watch out for: creepy first time directors with egos bigger and more noticeable than their talents (in other words, there is not a single HUMBLE bone in their body), assholes who tell you that you smell like fish, assholes that DO smell like fish, cooties, people who censor everything and people with no tact, Pretty-Scary at future conventions, and of course, gum on your seat. That royally fuckin' sucks when you have to ice down the ass of your pants. Or rub peanut butter on the spot, only to trade a sticky spot for a grease spot...good times.
Here's to hoping that you don't miss the bus and end up sharing a seat with someone who stares at you like you have something they want...to eat.
Good night.

Heather Dixon and Joseph Trione of Buffaclare Productions
Category: Movies, TV, Celebrities
By Andrew Shearer
Quentin Tarantino was recently quoted as saying, "Trying to make a feature film yourself with no money is the best film school you can do." Nowhere is this more evident than in the internet age, where the affordability and ease of shooting, cutting and quickly distributing one's work has given way to a landscape flooded with junior filmmakers from around the globe. But there's still the matter of talent, something no amount of schooling can grant, something that has nothing to do with how many hits your clip might get on YouTube. And talent is what separates Heather Dixon and Joseph Trione from the herd...

Night Of The Demons Central creator Heather Murphy
Category: Movies, TV, Celebrities
By: Andrew Shearer
In 2008, fans of cult film and b-movies merely need to Google search any given title and they'll come up with dozens, perhaps hundreds of pages containing information on the most obscure, bizarre, rare flicks they've ever heard of. Some of us, however, remember a time not so long ago when the Inter-nerd wasn't such a vast landscape of reviews, Wikipedia pages, and IMDB trivia. It was common to come up empty when researching a particular film, especially those of the low-budget variety, a problem which eventually gave way to some of the very first genre sites on the web. Usually they were crudely designed, the layouts were confusing, and the content was spotty at best.
And then there was Night Of The Demons Central, run by Heather Murphy... READ MORE!

The Pretty-Scary Anthology
Category: Writing and Poetry
Many of you have answered the call for submissions to the fantastic endevour of Pretty Scary's Anthology of women in horror. Many of you have queried me and I have responded as best that I can to your queries. We have set dates and broken dates and for everyone involved, I apologize. I wanted to make a public note that there are a lot of things out of my personal control, and if you are still interested in having your work included in the anthology, then I ask those who have sent in stories to send me, Gabby, an email and your story titles with synopsis and I will personally tell you your acceptance status. I'll do my best to answer the emails in a timely manner.
Accepted stories: please be patient as many factors have arisen as to why there are delays in the creation of this publication. Once accepted, know that you have a story coming out in a really awesome anthology and we are proud and honored to have your tales.
At any rate, I personally apologize for the lengthy response times, the lack of information, and the excruciating wait. I know what it is like to have to wait for replies. If you have any further questions, beyond sending those requested items to end the wait, please feel free to send me an email at: gabbygoff(at)pretty.scary.net
I look forward to hearing from all of you, good or bad.
P.S. (Post Scriptum): If you wish to NOT have your story included after you find out your status, that will be completely understood and respected. Once again, my many thanks to all whom have entered. I enjoyed the reading, and I hope that we can have a collection of stories in your hands as soon as it is possible.
Sincerely,
Gabby

R.I.P. Stephan Miller
..Tonight, I was supposed to drive into Hollywood and meet with Stephan Miller, a man I have known for a while now in the horror business. Stephan publishes Girls and Corpses Magazine, which we love, and I briefly edited a website called UHMN for him last year. Stephan just hired me to cover the Fangoria Convention in Los Angeles for his new company Sharenow.com this upcoming weekend, and I was looking forward to being the new horror consultant at Sharenow. Lately, it seemed that Stephan was doing me a lot of favors, and I didn't know why. The only reason I could come up with is that he's a really genuine, nice, interested and interesting guy. Only I won't be meeting with Stephan tonight, or any other night. (READ MORE...)

"Scary Scream Queens and Sci-Fi Sirens Team up!”
April 2008:
Pretty-Scary.Net and Pinkraygun.Com Form a Network to Give a Greater Voice to Female Fans in Male-Dominated Genres!
LOS ANGELES, CA (APRIL, 2008) – Sci-fi, fantasy, and horror are no longer men's clubs. Networks are increasingly finding that genre shows, such as Heroes, Lost, and Moonlight, have more female viewers than male viewers, and the Sci Fi Channel attracted 13 % more women and only 2 % more men in 2007, according to a recent article in AdWeek. PinkRayGun.com and Pretty-Scary.net were formed specifically for this expanding audience, and the two websites are now officially joining forces to create a network.
PinkRayGun.com is a webzine focusing on the modern fan girl. It's a smart and savvy place to discuss and read about science fiction, fantasy and horror in all of their forms, be it television, movies, books or comics.
Its Starlog meets Glamour, Babylon 5meets Coupling, and Isaac Asimov meets Helen Fielding. But snarkier.
Pink Raygun is everything you'd expect from a genre site, but girly. Every day at Pink Raygun, you'll find interviews with the women (and men) who make genre film and television awesome: writers, costume designers, hair and make-up artists, and special effects crew. We'll also talk to women (and men) who are working in manga, comics and fiction. Other features of Pink Raygun include genre news, a message board forum, opinion pieces addressing issues within sci-fi, fantasy and horror and an extensive section dedicated to reviews of print and visual media, events, websites and music.
Pretty-Scary.net is a female-run website focusing on women in the horror industry. News about actresses, authors, directors, musicians, and artists who are female grace the pages of this online entertainment website from a female perspective. Horror is the main theme, while sci-fi and fantasy are also covered to a lesser extent. The site was created to give women a place on the internet where they can talk horror, promote their projects, and learn more about women in the horror industry without having to deal with 14-year-old boys (and those with their mentality) who run, and frequent, other horror and genre websites.
Pretty-Scary.net's Heidi Martinuzzi and PinkRayGun's Lisa Fary decided to join forces since both of their websites are created for women who are genre fans. They both are independently owned and operated, and therefore not subject to pressure from corporate or media interests. Their visions are similar, and by banding together their fans can meet one another and share a love of horror and sci-fi in a way that is productive (and awesome).
"I think Lisa's a smart woman, and PinkRayGun is a kick in the pants," says Heidi Martinuzzi. "I see other websites competing with each other over visitors, and it's really awful the way genre press will end up feuding. I don't want to have anything to do with that. That's why I want PinkRayGun and my site to work together. I think it will make us so much stronger and really reinforce our presence for the female fans."
Lisa Fary says, "Pretty-Scary and Pink Raygun were founded separately, but on the same principles. Neither demands that women choose between strength or sexiness either in their genre entertainment or in themselves - we embrace both."
Both websites will share news stories, feeds, forum links, fans, and advertising to start. As 2008 moves along, expect to see even more integration between the two sites, which also plan to add female-centric fantasy, action, and mystery genre sites to their new network in the next few years.

About PinkRayGun
Pink RayGun is edited by Lisa Fary and Julianna Weiss with John Dallaire. Lisa Fary is a graduate of the creative writing program at Florida State University and holds an advanced degree in Special Education. Her early exposure to classic Battlestar Galactica in 1979 is largely responsible for her lifelong interest in science fiction and her childhood ambition of being an intergalactic space cowgirl.
Juliana Weiss is an aspiring TV writer in Los Angeles. She currently works as the head of the web content department for the star of an Emmy-nominated reality series. She has her mom to thank for her interest in science-fiction and her dad to thank for her wordsmithiness. John Dallaire has over ten years of experience in commercial illustration and graphic design. He does art and illustration work for many of the casinos and resorts in Las Vegas.
