Interview (The Pristines: sisters by chance, bandmates by choice)

(Interview for The Talon Marks @ Cerritos College done by Norma Palacios)

Creating music among family can sometimes cause sibling rivalry. However, when The Pristines create the music that inspires them both say that sibling rivalry takes a back seat.

Daisy Salas, 19, Long Beach City College student, said that she and her sister have been playing music for seven years that the idea of starting a band was just a thought.

However, when her sister Jamie, 22, drummer, Cerritos student and psychology major, got a drum set, she was just messing around on the drum set when the elder Salas said, "'Want to start a band?'" The other said "Why not?"

The younger Salas first learned to play the guitar in the 7th grade.

Music has had an influence on the elder Salas as well. At the age of 5 she played the accordion until the age of 10. However, both said they taught themselves how to play their individual instruments.

In trying to describe the music both say that it is hard to explain because there is no way to categorize it. When it comes to the songs that they perform the younger Salas said that she doesn't write anything down.

"I memorize the lyrics even if the lyrics don't make sense," she explained, "and (sometimes when) I'm performing them I add more lyrics to the song."

When the duo performed for the first time both said that there was a question of whether or not they would make it in the music industry.

Despite the comment about them not "making it" in the music industry, the sisters decided to keep their heads up.

Within that first performance, they felt there was a negative perception about the fact that they were a "chick band" comprised of young women.

"Those in the audience called us 'chicks'," the elder Salas said, "but there was also a standard that we should have men in the band."

In addition, she explained that those who have come to see them perform were also trying to figure out which band they sounded like.

"Some people would say that we sound like a cross between Bikini Kill and No Doubt," she continued, "but it is more about how the music itself and how (it) inspires you."

One of the clubs that has supported them is the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance.

Last November the FMLA held a promotional concert for its club that featured Chronic Melancholy and The Pristines. Aside from performing at Cerritos the duo has previously performed at Cal State Fullerton and Cafe Kashmir in South Gate.

Next month they will be performing at the Il Corral on Feb. 12, the Good Hurt on Feb. 15 and Anarchy Library on Feb. 16.Currently, the group is hard at work on its yet-to-be titled album due out sometime mid-year.

Friends who have known The Pristines like Jonathan Mota, English major, and who first met them when they went to El Rancho High School said that what they do musically is terrific.

He said that both have a way of interacting with each other and that what's great about The Pristines is that they can inspire but also be who they are.

"For me it's the fact that both Salas' are sisters," he commented, "and the band's (songs) are very good."

Matthew Zabala, English major, agreed. Although some of the music could shock audiences it is the fact that the band can be open that he sees as great.

Nicole Bernal, English major, who has seen the band perform three times says that it is refreshing to see sisters perform because you don't see sisters who get along that often.

To have a club like FMLA be supportive of their music, the sisters are grateful to all the members within the club.

12 months of stupidity Pristines Style

'Tis almost the end of 2006 and we would like to take a trip down memory lane and possibly point out the highlights.

1. January- Partying with our friends from Land of Ill Earthquakes in Whittier. Shauntae was drunk and so was Skippy.

2. February- The first time Riot This shared the stage with The Pristines : )

3. March- Daisy decides to play a new song which we only played once which she totally improvised the lyrics for.

4. April- A return to the Blvd Cafe with Riot This, Bruise Violet and Shadow Monarch. Amanda joins us on stage and Yuko interviews us.

5. May- Not much during that month other than we just keep getting these sexy bitches all over our jocks. Oh yeah Daisy fractured a finger which she claims was due to a football injury, everyone else suspects masterbation.

6. June- Lesbian clubs seem to be cancelling our shows aparently Jamie's sexual ambiguity  was too much for the ladies to handle.

7. July- Warped Tour, yay! The peeps from Naked Aggression were friendly and awesome. Jamie chased Shane West because her manager, Kristin, told her to. Daisy passed out on top of a pile of trash after drinking way too many pabst. (Daisy turns 19)

8. August- Girls night out in Pomona!!! Good bands!!! Yet another lesbian club cancels...dude what the hell is up? (Jamie turns 22)

9. September- Are you queer? Yes Ma'am! Drag queens, spoken word, condoms and great bands...ahhh what a night. Daisy was thrown on the floor and freaked by a drag queen. Alas no dental dams were displayed.

10. October- We met this guy Ted who recorded Poison and Free, they are just rough mixes we swear. We love our fans.

11. November- Busy month 4 shows this time. We played to the beat of a train, lets call it the train song. Plus 5points to the singer from GBG, you know why. Plus 10 points for our friend Bubba who provided us with plenty of drinks at Cal-State Fullerton.

12. December- It's about time we played a show with Leda Atomica, we love Angela....and possibly Janel ha ha. The Il Coral is the spot, Jamie wants to marry a member of 14 Year-Old Girls and Daisy was fat off of pizza and didn't sing Poison.

What's been going on.

It's been a while since we last updated our friends and beautiful fans about what the hell we've been up to these last months. With the help of Ted we recorded two songs "Poison" and "Free" which are a rough mix of what's to come on our upcoming album. With all the feed back we've received about these songs we know that all you Pristines' whores are ready for more. Daisy and I have been working on some new tunes that we know you'll adore and if you happen to catch our latest shows we will defiantely be playing our new songs live.

September and October were crazy months due to personal and musical factors, yes believe it or not we have lives outside of the band. Ted has been recording us and is very excited with the new material that Daisy and I have come up with. We are looking at possibly sometime in February of next year for our album to be released.

From the bottom of our hearts we thank those who have consistently supported us. We'd like to especially thank our loyal fans who dance at our shows XOXO! Don't miss out on our shows for November!

New songs Now!

Previews of what's to come soon! (songs)

1. Free

2. Poison

A couple weeks ago with the help of Ted we were able to record a little something for the wife and kids. We decided to give our fans something to keep them at bay until our full length CD comes out. Daisy and I both felt that the songs "Free" and "Poison" would start to define our upcoming CD.

Warped Tour

We are all exhausted from yesterday's warped tour, but it was worth it. It was an honor sharing the stage with great bands and getting to know all the awesome people at the Shira Girl tent. We'd like to give out a giant Pristines XOXO to Shira Girl, Smigma Productions, Sugar Hooker Entertainment, Kristin + Monica, Janette and The Panda for all there support and hard work. Last but certainly not least we'd like to thank our fans for going out there and supporting.

Good bye Sleater-Kinney
Current mood: nostalgic

How to begin this oh so sad blog? We'd like to thank one of the greatest bands of the 1990's-2000's that made it possible for bands like us to be inspired. I know that many artists as well as individuals agree that it's a shame that such great talent is no longer together. Sleater-Kinney broke away from the riot-grrl stigma and transformed every fan's soul. This one goes out to Corin, Carrie and Janet for all the joy they brought us with their music, much love ladies!

Now what? I suppose it's up to the new era of like-minded girls to continue with the attitude, hopes, dreams and talent of all those before us. I just wish this were all a dream.
