always senseless, violence POEM
Current mood: numb
Category: Writing and Poetry
Notes on text
The piece below is a work of fiction, however the statistics of teenagers dying on the streets of London are very real.
'always senseless, violence'
(i)
The rise in knife crime
Is bathing the news in blood
'Our children need to be protected,
that's why, they carry knives –
because we, the grown-ups have failed.
In doing our job.' The expert's words fall
On deaf ears
Gemma, Mikey and James
Don't watch the news, but
They know. Anger - through
Scars on arms, cuts and bruises
From fists and knuckles on belts
(ii)
The city has a different kind of darkness,
It falls in layers of coal-black confusion
Swallowing the youth whole, eating into
The street's unwritten codes
'Another teenager was stabbed last night,
dying from a single stab wound to the chest.'
Gemma, Mikey and James
Are just messing about this Friday night,
Joking and laughing. As young people do
Best, they are just enjoying themselves.
Friends, that belong. To the same gang.
(iii)
The crime scene, is witnessed by the random
Street-light. The blood stains are small, but
Fatal.
'There are two types of children: the leader
who comes from a broken home, and
the follower, who feels the pressure to impress,
or just keep up the pace.' The expert continues.
As panic rises in guilty echoes,
A dog's desperate bark matches
The sound of footsteps, running.
Gemma is the leader, Mikey and James
Follow. And I am the one standing,
In their way. The dog is mine, I hope
He finds his own way home.
