always senseless, violence POEM
Current mood: numb
Category: Writing and Poetry

Notes on text

The piece below is a work of fiction, however the statistics of teenagers dying on the streets of London are very real.

'always senseless, violence'

(i)

The rise in knife crime

Is bathing the news in blood

'Our children need to be protected,

that's why, they carry knives –

because we, the grown-ups have failed.

In doing our job.' The expert's words fall

On deaf ears

Gemma, Mikey and James

Don't watch the news, but

They know. Anger - through

Scars on arms, cuts and bruises

From fists and knuckles on belts

(ii)

The city has a different kind of darkness,

It falls in layers of coal-black confusion

Swallowing the youth whole, eating into

The street's unwritten codes

'Another teenager was stabbed last night,

dying from a single stab wound to the chest.'

Gemma, Mikey and James

Are just messing about this Friday night,

Joking and laughing. As young people do

Best, they are just enjoying themselves.

Friends, that belong. To the same gang.

(iii)

The crime scene, is witnessed by the random

Street-light. The blood stains are small, but

Fatal.

'There are two types of children: the leader

who comes from a broken home, and

the follower, who feels the pressure to impress,

or just keep up the pace.' The expert continues.

As panic rises in guilty echoes,

A dog's desperate bark matches

The sound of footsteps, running.

Gemma is the leader, Mikey and James

Follow. And I am the one standing,

In their way. The dog is mine, I hope

He finds his own way home.

it takes courage AFFIRMATION
Current mood: adventurous
Category: Writing and Poetry

'it takes courage'

(i)

Worthy, to be

Alive

In moments

Seized, before

Falling

Into obscurity

Reminded, I

Feel

No fear

Invigorated, I let

Life

Show me

(ii)

Meditate and think

About the purpose

Within

Unlock to elevate

Those potent thoughts

Intent

To create real

Change in this

World

(iii)

There is a way

And that way is,

Forward

as we grow, into POEM
Current mood: adventurous
Category: Writing and Poetry

'as we grow, into'

The best things in life

Are free. It is true,

If we stay true, to life.

Waiting for our soul's

Coming of age,

We embrace

Change

Mantras repeated

Listening to the rain's

Gently caressing serenade

At the core of

Becoming our selves,

We breathe

Peace

Seeking acceptance

In the soothing rhythm

To which hearts beat

In the realisation of

Being, that which

We always

Were

Poets and

Lovers, sisters and mothers

We already know

The best things in life

Are free. It is true,

If we stay true, to life.

thoughts on life POEMS (warning contains material that may disturb some readers)
Current mood: indescribable
Category: Writing and Poetry

Notes: this collection of thoughts are responses to individual news stories, the first one reflecting on the recent debate about how far into pegnancy abortion should be legal.

'thoughts on life ONE'

The unborn

Has no rights

Before twenty-four

Weeks old, yet

At eight weeks

The baby is

A fetus, moving

Arms and legs

And four months

Later, survival

Outside the womb

Is possible

 'thoughts on life, TWO'

'I'd like to stay

With my aunt

And uncle, if

They want me'

The boy says

Without tears

Hoping his fourteen

Years are worth

Something more

Than being just

Another orphan

Left, with nothing

In this world

But pain

'thoughts on life, THREE'

A mother's

Love, lives on

Even when

Death comes

To snatch a

Young body

Dying, close

To her heart

She knows she

Will never recover

to belong POEM
Current mood: tired
Category: Writing and Poetry

'to belong'

The loneliness

I inherited

Dug up

My roots –

Now scattered

In broken

Dreams,

Pacing restlessly

Through

The doorways

I stay

Hidden in –

Feelings lost

In rejection's

Wound,

Aching ruefully

Internalising

The echoes

I hear

Spoken in –

Dull nightmares

Belonging nowhere

Tears,

Take me

Home

a glimpse POEM
Current mood: bouncy
Category: Writing and Poetry

'a glimpse'

The sun's

Eye, watches

Joy unfold

In the floral

Creases of

Fluttering summer

Dresses, caressing

Bare legs

Arousing smiles

That curve

Lips pleasantly

Upwards, hoping

child is POEM
Current mood: artistic
Category: Writing and Poetry

'child is'

(i)

Always missed,

Travelling back

To lost time

Barefoot,

And vulnerable

Searching

For sand castles,

Burying hope

In swept away

Promises,

Selling souls

Cheaply

(ii)

Spirit untamed,

Finally free

Of the world's

Chains,

Beaming with

Potential

Courage ignites,

With intention

Born out of

Love,

Longing to

Current mood: adventurous

'and I am, yours'

Make me feel

            Like myself

            A fire, ready

Once more

Stroke my flames

            A master, willing

Me whole

Stay with me

            In spirit

            A union, able

All pain

untitled (colour me in) POEM
Current mood: amorous
Category: Writing and Poetry

’untitled (colour me in)’

Senses alive

I thrive

On your touch

Finding waters

Storming

Secrets seduced

I converse

With your soul

Seeking depth

Desired

Enigmas undone

I stay

In your thoughts

Freeing tingles

Unbuttoned
