Well. It's been an insane week. To be honest, I can't even post half of the stuff that's happened, but my friends have been earning their stripes in spades. For that, I thank each and every one of you. Whether it's been offering a place to stay for a night, bringing me out for some brews, or just listening to me babble, you guys have been there.
Today marks my last day here. Close the chapter, move onto the next. I have a few things to take care of, in light of recent events. I might have to make a quick trip out to Winnipeg to see a relative for the last time. I have to dash to Saskatoon to clear up some passport & identification issues. Edmonton beckons to see the best people in the world and see some good bands. Vancouver later in the spring to see friends. And somewhere in my mind, I'm plotting a roadtrip to Vegas & L.A. In order for this to happen, I need to take care of a lot of shit.
Props: Mark ~ Grade A class, my man. Scott & Crystal ~ You two have become very close to me. I'm glad to see you two so happy together, and I'm also very glad to have you guys in my corner. Ally ~ For helping me open my eyes and making me want to be a better person. Eternally grateful, beyond what you could comprehend. Denelle ~ You know me better than anyone. You also know just what to say to make me feel better, no matter what. One day, we'll both reach happiness. Alicia ~ Everyone needs a psuedo-girlfriend. Sean ~ For being my antagonistic Irish friend. I'm glad things are going well for you & Crys, and only half a year away until a bitchin' bachelor party. Bogs ~ For being my antagonistic German friend. I never have a bad time with you. Jeremy ~ For being a good guy as a radio peer. I'll be coming to Vic to see you in May, if all goes to plan. Adam ~ For knowing exactly what I've gone through and saying the right words. Punk Goddess Kristin ~ For just being rad. Not too rad though, because that's bad. Hailey ~ For actually pretending you liked my kareoke. Mike ~ For support and still championing good music. Whatever happened to the M.A.P., brother? Nesta ~ For the advice you give. Linz ~ For being you. Don't change.
For now, I disappear. I'm willing to wager $500 MySpace will only be 1/8th as cool as it used to be when I get back.

Yes, the next 26 hours suck for single people. We like to go into hibernation while people race around town trying to find gifts for their loved ones. This is the first V-Day in a couple years I'll be celebrating stag-style, and I bet you'll see a lot of bitterness in blogs, bulletins, and in real life, too, because that DOES exist. I'm going to give you something rare, a positive blog about V-Day from a single person.
I didn't end up celebrating a V-Day with someone until I was 21. The relationships I had before would start a couple months after, and not last through the winter, because I'm like that. So a couple weeks before V-Day '03, I didn't even have a girlfriend. I ended up meeting someone on the first week of February, and we hit it off. I wanted to do something nice for her, like taking her out or something cliche, but I had agreed to work the night manager shift at the store so everyone else could be with their significant others weeks in advance, so that pretty much ruined any plans. She knew all of this, so we agreed that we'd just spend the night together, that'd be good enough. I still felt like I wanted to do something nice for her though. So, on V-Day, because I couldn't leave the store, I called up my grandma of all people and asked if she could do me a favour: go out to the lady's favorite chocolatier (Bernard Callebaut), grab me a box of chocolates and something stuffed, and bring it back to me at the store. My grandma was a gamer, and she stood in line for quite a while to help me out. Very cool. I got my last-minute present, and at 10:30pm, I got home and the look on her face was priceless. Packaged with the box of chocolates was a heart pendant, and she held onto that for a while, as I remember. I've been able to do some things for V-Day since then, but that ranks as the best. Small, low-key, and unexpected.
So, from the single world, you crazy kids have a good V-Day. Just try not to rub our noses in it too much, k?

The players are set into motion. Time for a tease.
The first time it happened, carnage. 3 people passed out. 2 more were led out, unable to walk or control their urge to vomit. 1 was arrested for jumping off my roof onto the neighbour's trampoline and crashing into their fence. The cops shut us down, and we kept going. 7 stayed overnight, too drunk to do anything. The legend started.
The second time it happened, 2 acts of vandalism, another visit from the cops, and I was incapacitated for 3 hours.
Friday, February 16th. Time for Round 3. The Massacre officially rolls into Edmonton.

~ Got a couple places lined up for bachelor inspection tomorrow. I'll probably have a place set up by the 15th. More on that after the weekend.
~ I had enough of the ANS coverage about 3 minutes into the CNN broadcast and seeing she's getting the dead president treatment. Ignore the fact her & her dead son are heroin addicts who now look like they both died from mixtures of methadone, and her infant was born addicted to the drug as well. Ignore the fact also that she's been running interference in the "Who's My Baby's Daddy?" drama straight out of Maury. Ignore the fact she sued an entire family for the right to inherit her dead rich husband's empire. Obviously this woman's a saint because CNN says so.

2:51 PM - 35 Months Revisited.
Current mood: mischievous
Category: Music
I was looking through an old blog posting of mine on another site, and 3 years ago, I did this one post where I listed 30 random tracks that would play and I'd post little blurbs about each song that's playing. I thought I'd revisit this 3 years later and see what comes up.
#1 - Bad Religion - A Streetkid Named Desire
This one would make Punk Goddess Kristin happy. This is one concert on my list I still need to cross off.
#2 - Depeche Mode - Precious
This song screams broken heart in the rain. Actually, I'm pretty sure that's every Depeche Mode song.
#3 - Our Lady Peace - Naveed (Live from 1995)
There's something special about hearing a band which is trying to make it, or just breaking. There's a reason why people will brag about seeing a big band when they were new; because most times that's the best time to see them. They're putting effort into every single song they perform. I've had this gem for a long time, and Mr. Anderson was gracious enough to fill me in with the rest of the CD. Good tune.
#4 - Our Lady Peace - The Birdman
A repeat? This early? Maybe I need to tweak my iTunes settings. Still, I love this song, even if you can't understand what Raine says for half of it. Dude. Open your mouth when you sing.
#5 - Motley Crue - Wild Side
Okay, I've told the story about my first CD ever being Crue's Dr. Feelgood. I need a new anecdote. My favorite member of Crue? Definitely Nikki Sixx. That fucker can live through anything, like batshit crazy. Seriously, live a day as the Sixxster circa 1985, and see if you live to tell about it.
#6 - The Waking Eyes - On A Train
Wow, I haven't heard this one in a while. Saw these guys live, and this song slays, not to mention pretty much everything else. Plus they had Wolfmother hair before it was cool.
#7 - My Chemical Romance - Helena
It's amazing how a lot of people shit on this band. I'll admit it, MCR's Black Parade was one of my preferred CD's of '06. When a band comes along and becomes as big as these guys are, it's a lot easier to rag on them than respect what they do. The music is solid, the message is good, and this song is about as personal as it's ever going to get with this band. Can't wait to see it live.
#8 - Velvet Revolver - Slither
Holy shit, I remember the hype when this was still 'The Project'. 3 members of GNR, Scott Weiland, who's been the closest thing we've had to an old school drugged out rocker until Pete Doherty stole the crown, and Slash's schmo friend make a band. The only thing this can be is great. Set Me Free gets released on the Hulk OST, and it's a blazing track. This gets released on radio; amazing song. Then Contraband gets released. And, well. I was disappointed with that album. Shame on me for the high expectations.
#9 - Gordon Lightfoot - The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald
If you shit on me for this, I'll spork you to death. This is such an amazing story, great song. Now Gordon, stop charging so much for your concerts. Please.
#10 - Metallica - Wherever I May Roam
I call this the Hobo's Anthem. No, I haven't been told I have an unhealthy obsession with hobos.
#11 - Pearl Jam - Spin The Black Circle
Oh shit, now I'm going to have this chorus in my head. Yeah, I don't have any big connection to this song, but if you get a couple courage drinks in me, I'll try to sing any Vedder song I know the words to. That's a lot. After all, some of the most untalented singers in the business can do Vedder to a T.
#12 - Our Lady Peace - Starseed (Live)
Yeah, definitely going to have to fix those settings. But fuck, kids. I know a certain person out there who loves this intro, and there's a few more out there. Listen to the version of Starseed off of the Live CD. There's a 3 minute intro which is just insane. I own the DVD they recorded at Skyreach a couple years back, and watching this is astounding. Sounds really good on a nice stereo too. Go. Listen now.
#13 - Stabbing Westward - What Do I Have To Do?
Ooooooooh, a breakup song. These guys just couldn't survive the death of the industrial rock phase that we went through in the late 90's, but some of their jams are good, like this one. I think I listened to this a LOT in 2000. Oh, and Wither, Blister, Burn & Peel is a great name for a CD.
#14 - Live - Lakini's Juice
Live's dark album. Secret Samadhi. I remember this video being on very good crack, and this is one of those songs that no one remembers unless you're a pretty big Live fan. And it's so good. This was the first single they released after Throwing Copper, people didn't like it because it was different than TC. I actually prefer Samadhi.
#15 - Sloan - Everything You've Done Wrong
Hey, there we go. A nice, happy song to lighten the mood. Seriously, never seen these guys live, I bet it's just one big party. Even if Patrick Pentland looks like he could be the biggest asshole ever. I mean, he could be rad, but have you ever seen him smile in an interview or video?
#16 - Linkin Park - Crawling (Reanimation Remix f. Aaron Lewis)
All it takes is some time away from the spotlight, and people start wanting you back. I'm actually excited for the new joint they're going to drop. If you've never heard the remixes off of Reanimation including this and the mix of One Step Closer featuring Johnathon Davis, you should. Then you might feel what I'm feeling: that these guys might drop one of the biggest CD's of '07. April 30th.
#17 - The Cult - New York City
A song talking about the crazy bitches that inhabit NYC, the fact the city is bullshit, and how he's leaving and never coming back. And singing on the track? Motherfucking Iggy Pop. Goth cock rock at its very best.
#18 - Stone Temple Pilots - All In The Suit That You Wear
STP's probably my favorite band to come out of the grunge era. Call Weiland what you will, but he's a fucking showman, a 24-car pileup waiting to happen. Core & Purple are faves of mine, and this song, the last they recorded for Thank You, was one of their strongest for me. I hope they never reform though.
#19 - The Headstones - Blowtorch
Anyone catch Hugh Dillon in the Trailer Park Boys movie? You didn't? It comes out on DVD in a couple weeks. Snoogins.
#20 - The Cure - Burn
If I could have lived my 20's in any other era, give me the 80's. So many great new wave bands, and The Cure is near and dear to my heart. I'd sell my soul for Robert Smith's hair in a heartbeat, kids. One of my favorites, this is from The Crow OST. Want me to be yours for life? Buy me a ticket to see these guys perform anywhere in the world.
#21 - Van Halen - Panama
So, which of you's coming to see these guys with me this year to scream this as loud as we can? PANAMA! PANAMA-A-A-A-A-A-A-A!
#22 - The Who - Baba O'Reilly
Note to any band out there: Please do not cover this fucking song. It's as close to perfection as one can get. You can't do it justice, and you can't do it differently. I'll still rock out to it, but I'll hate you for doing it. Do Paint It Black. Everyone else does. But leave this one alone. And yes, I just did some Pete Townshend windmill air guitar. Damn proud of it too.
#23 - The Silversun Pickups - Lazy Eye
You know, I would have gotten tickets to that damned Snow Patrol gig had I learned that these guys were going to be added to the bill. I know, I know, there's still time to get tickets. I just like to bitch.
#24 - Neil Young - Old Man
Old man, look at my life... I'm a lot like you were. I hope not.
#25 - Tool - Sober
You know, I almost thought I'd get out of this without one of my 3 favorite bands coming up. Do you really think these guys are done? I hope not. You go ahead and name me a bad Tool album. I dare you.
#26 - Audioslave - Out Of Exile
I'm going to have to work on my air drum techniques to have to get that intro down.
#27 - The Tragically Hip - Springtime In Vienna
Ok, you want to talk lyrical geniuses? Let's go with Gord for a sec.
"Instructions from the manual could no have been more plain The blues are still required , The blues are still required again Past territorial piss-posts past whispers in the closets Past screaming from the roof tops We live to survive our paradoxes We'll live to survive our paradoxes"
Ok, so does anyone want to take the challenge of deciphering that one for me?
#28 - Madonna - Like A Prayer
Shit. It's a guilty pleasure, okay? Seriously, she was fucking hot in this video. Dark hair for the first time, little dress showing off her chest. Ah, whatever. There's no way I'm going to make this one sound good. Next.
#29 - Coldplay - The Scientist
So I watched the extras on The 40-Year Old Virgin the other day, and they have this extended version of the 'You Know How I Know That You're Gay?' scene. Seriously, it's like 8 minutes long. Absolute gold.
#30 - Thornley - Come Again
I never realized how much Ian Thornley's been a prominent figure in my musical choices until I realized, it's been 10 fucking years since In Loving Memory Of... came out. Since then, I've been a Thornley junkie through and through. A seriously underrated guitarist, and I'll always remember how much I loved Under The Lighthouse.
#31 - Limblifter - Wake Up To The Sun
This came on, and I really couldn't leave it off, because it's one of my favorite songs. So I'm doing one extra.

12:03 AM - Balls To The _____.
Current mood: anxious
Category: Life
The Week That Was
Tuesday: Rolled into Edmonton with some bad intentions. Spent most of my day at WEM, including a spur-of-the-moment bungee jump. Yeah, probably the scariest thing I've done in my life, and it was definitely one of my finest hours. Then A & I went to a great concert, Papa Roach at Ed's. I've been very into their new single, and never seeing them live before, it was great to see a lot of songs that I dug growing up. That capped off a busy January, 7 shows. Rock.
Wednesday: Traveled home to Saskatoon. Got in late, and had a 3 hour chat-&-drink with my mom. Might sound lame, except anyone who's chatted with my mom for 2 seconds knows she's the coolest person on the planet. Talked about a lot of things going on in my life, and it was good for the soul. Basically, the point I got from the convo is to stop being stupid about things in my life. Point received.
Thursday: Well, sleeping in until 3pm makes the day an automatic writeoff. So I visited my grandma, relaxed and had a good reconnect. Also hung out with some friends. Nothing exciting. This was the calm before the storm, folks.
Friday: Did my Saskatoon running around, well, some of it. Most of it, actually. Then D rolled into town. My mom made this gigantic meal, D & I reminisced about better days, and went out for a flick. She had never seen Casino Royale, and I was in the mood for a good Bond flick. I missed my best friend, that's for sure. Then I went for a few drinks at the Hose. A few being quite a few. Got home, got a few texts saying I was missing the party of the century in Edmonton, but it doesn't matter. I needed my time in Saskatoon to clear my head.
Saturday: Rolled into E-town for shenanigans. But a lot of people were too sick for shenanigans, and the other peeps were working late. So I needed to waste some time. So I popped into the casino at 10:30 at night, laid $40 down on the roulette table, and put my faith in Lady Luck. Man, is that bitch a good lay. I won myself $200 when I left the casino on relatively small bets, winning 8 out of 11 plays. Hooray for the outside. So I decided to share my winnings with Shaun at Hudson's On Campus, which was a blast. Bogs, I -HAVE- to spend more time with you. Guiness, MGD & Jag were like candy. Thanks for a good night.
Sunday: Woke up on McC's couch, we got mobile grabbing essentials for the afternoon, meaning beer & Jag. Then we prepared for the Super Bowl by watching Legally Blonde. Yeah. Go me for knowing some of the movie. The game itself was insane. So was the halftime show. Now, I was going to gush all over Prince's show, but apparently a lot of people didn't like his set. Well, for my thoughts on what I thought about the show, we go back to 1:30pm on Sunday:
R: "Dude, what if Prince played Purple Rain during the Super Bowl half-time show?"
McC: "That would be the most epic half-time show ever!"
Purple Rain played & ended it. We cried man-tears.
And we got a pizza on 25 minutes. With wings. Shit, I haven't had a bad pizza from Pizza 73 yet. Mad props to those guys for being prepared on the busiest day of the year. Colts won, McC went nuts, we played Battleship, and I lost. All over McC's floor. Sorry brother.
Status Report
Lots of people have asked how I'm doing. I'm good. I love you all for asking.
And The Rest...
~ Talking to my mom made me realize how scared I am of growing old alone.
~ There's a couple prospects on places to live. I'll explore those more in-depth this weekend, while I'm in town for the BeerFest. Rawr.
~ We're invading. 3 of my Saskatoon crew are coming down in late Febtober. We're getting hotel rooms, tickets to Wolfmother (oh yes, we will), and we're going to destroy everyone. RSVP now, kids. This one's going to get ugly.

12:35 AM - Go Hard AND Go Home???
Current mood: exhausted
Category: Life
This is my Sunday night, a night to catch up on sleep, make sure I have some food in my belly, all that jazz. Wednesday, Mark came to town and we caught up over beers. Thursday, I woke up at 12pm, waddled over to the computer, and snagged 2 floor tickets to the 'Sold Out' Billy Talent gig in E-town. I love Ticketmaster and their policy for releasing tickets the day of the concert. Makes these impulse decisions so much easier...
The show was the balls. We missed Moneen, but Anti-Flag & Rise Against kicked ass. Billy Talent were excellent, but there was something... surreal about seeing BT in a venue like Rexall Place. I'm sure it's nothing like seeing them in a seedy punk club. Friday was a local show, Shattered Core/SOS/Rigveda, and it was good times at the Starlite.
Ok, so let's play catch-up: I have to travel down to Saskatoon this week. There's some unresolved issues to take care of, and it's better to do it now than wait for the problems to come up later. We'll see how long the trip is for, possibly back in E-town by Superbowl Sunday.
Just a quick thought. I'm obviously in the minority in this thought, with all the Coachella love being spread around, but I'm not as impressed with this year's lineup as I was with last year's. I mean, okay, Madonna was a weird choice for '06, and a RATM reunion with the possibility of two other bands reforming on this bill (The Police & Smashing Pumpkins) are big cases for the lovers, but I had connections with a lot of the bands for '06. The Cure. Depeche Mode. Tool, just to name a few. Maybe it's because I've written myself off for this one. Not enough cash, too bad. But I'll be hitting up Virgin Fest '07 in Vancouver, can't wait for this one. It'll be good times with Cloe, like old times, except less drugs.
Ryan wants a beer now. Ciao.

Category: Life
Just a quick observation. The past few months have been some of the happiest I've had in my life. So, you start to wonder why that is. Well, in taking a look at the people who are closest to me right now, they're all pretty happy too.
I've been hanging out with a certain group of people lately, and in coming into each other's lives, which you could say 6 months ago we never knew each other, we've all of a sudden become insanely happy with our lives, partly due to the fact we've found each other. No drama, no politics, just a good time.
Maybe instead of finding good people, I've found the right people to associate myself with. It's a good feeling, and I hope we can continue to know each other for a long time to come.
That's it for now. Cheers.

I don't know what it is, but lately there's been a rash of wrong numbers. Usually it's me getting the calls, both at work and at home. Hell, even I did it this weekend inadvertantly, when the inept Rogers Guy™ gave me the wrong number for me to dial into my voicemail. So I'm phoning this girl's cell phone voicemail instead of my own. I felt like asking her if she could help me out with my problem.
Normally I just hang up on wrong numbers, with a polite 'No problem'. But I could never actually talk to a wrong number, like I've heard some people have done. Can you imagine trying to introduce your new girlfriend to your friends, and they ask how you met, and you go 'Well, it was absolute fate. She called me up looking for Domino's, and it turns out we love the same pizza. From there, we just clicked', and all the while, your friends are thinking about how fucked up you are.
I've even heard of people who are so lonely, they call wrong numbers just to start conversations because they don't have anyone to talk to. What, you don't have $3.99 a minute to call one of those lines that advertise at 2am with the girls in the bikinis? You know, those ones where the operators probably look more like the fat guy from the immortal KITH sketch who wanted to talk if you called 555-SLUT?
I guess I'm just not that friendly to strangers. Especially ones that call at 1 in the morning asking for Jim, then call back again asking for Jim. Then they call back 3 minutes later, thinking the problem will sort itself out.
FUCKING JIM DOESN'T LIKE YOU! THAT'S WHY HE NEVER GAVE YOU HIS NEW NUMBER! NOW LEAVE ME OUT OF YOUR HOMOEROTIC LATE NIGHT HOOKUP DRAMA AND LET ME SLEEP, FUCKSTICK!
And people wonder why I don't answer numbers I don't recognize anymore...
