October 9, 2008 - Thursday

last night i dreamed....
Current mood: awake

This is a post compiling five links (four articles and one video, made by a friend of mine, Franklin Lopez, --top friend:  Submedia-- and his media activist friends)...

Last night I read all these articles before I went to sleep.  One dream:  I was in house with some friends.  We were meeting about what to do about the issues named below.  Suddenly the door was busted in, and the place was swarmed with riot police.  We were told we were being detained, and couldn't leave.  They started shutting us in with the sliding doors, and just as I was thinking to myself that I could use my cell phone to get help if they locked us in here, and they were about to close the doors completely, they said, "wait a sec.." and they took my cell phone.

I thought, "Well, at least without my phone, they can't find me by GPS..."

Then I thought to myself, "There is no fucking way I am staying here..."

But all my friends I was there with were passively waiting.  I couldn't wait to see what was next.

Then I realized:  They had locked us into the center of the house...  THEY were in front.  That left the back rooms vacant, if they hadn't surrounded the house.  While my friends were chatting with each other like this was a tolerable condition, I slipped away.  I didn't want to tell anyone I was leaving, because I didn't know who to trust anymore...

I found a room in which there was no one, went to the window, and saw that the tree was too far away to climb down.  But I looked to the ground and saw it wasn't as far as I thought...  I tore the screen off, climbed over the sill, put my foot on the top of an awning, and shimmied down the corner of the house a bit before I leaped to the ground.

I wasn't far from where I live, so I headed in the direction of home.  There were obstacles everywhere.  There were fences, bushes, places I could hide while I staked out my route.   But there were also weird things like huge piles of shit everywhere that I had to find a way around, thinking, "If I step in that, I'd smell, and they'd see the track, and find me..."  It took an extraordinary amount of time and energy to get around to what normally would be a direct route...  And when I finally found my way to a street I normally would have driven down to get to my one way street, I saw it was blocked off by cops.

I slipped away again, trying to figure out how to get home.  I thought, "I have the key to my car, but I don't think I should drive--There were no cars on the roads, and I'd be spotted."  And I didn't have my house keys...

I woke up before I made it home, with my heart racing, out of breath, and feeling nauseous...

Below are the articles, excerpted, with links.  This isn't a joke.  It's not a dream.  It's a very bad sign, as Amy Goodman says...

Invasion of the Sea-Smurfs

"...The political and financial establishments seem completely galled that people would actually oppose their massive bailout, which rewards financiers for gambling. Normal people worry about paying their bills, buying groceries and gas, and paying rent or a mortgage in increasingly uncertain times. No one ever offers to bail them out. Wall Street's house of cards has collapsed, and the rich bankers are getting little sympathy from working people.

That's where the sea-smurfs come in....."

Thousands of Troops Are Deployed on U. S. Streets Ready to Carry Out "Crowd Control"

By Naomi Wolf, AlterNet. Posted October 8, 2008.

Members of Congress were told they could face martial law if they didn't pass the bailout bill. This will not be the last time....

Background: the First Brigade of the Third Infantry Division, three to four thousand soldiers, has been deployed in the United States as of October 1. Their stated mission is the form of crowd control they practiced in Iraq, subduing "unruly individuals," and the management of a national emergency.

I interviewed Vietnam veteran, retired U. S. Air Force Colonel and patriot David Antoon for clarification.....

America ! Be Truly Afraid...   By Rand Clifford...  06 October, 2008  Countercurrents.org

"...So what if instead of subjugating, dividing and stupefying the the people, corporate media actually lived up to its noblest reason for being and served the peoples' best interests? What might be some of the headlines we'd see, and the essence driving them?

Perhaps...."

"Continuity of Government" (COG) Provisions activated in 2001....  Ten months before the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld approved an updated version of the U. EMAIL LIST NEWS : Last Update : Rocktober 7, 2008 10:01 Good morning slaves,

I just got back from Seattle where I joined forces with the motherfuckin video ninjas at Pepperspray Productions. You might remember that not too long ago, we teamed up to provide you street level coverage of the Republicrat Spectacle. Well, on whim we decided to team up again and create a video manifesto of sorts about the success of the mass dissent that took place in Denver and Saint Paul. Big upz to all who supported this project in one way or another.

So I'll try to keep this short. The film is 30 minutes long and viewable online. You can also download it as an MP4 or as a DVD image via Bit Torrent.

Screenings are popping up all over the place. Next week in Bellingham, Atlanta and Montreal. We are working on screenings in Toronto, New York City and San Francisco. Check the film's page for more upcoming screenings.

If you want to screen it in your community, simply download the film or order a DVD from subMedia. TV. The cost is $15 including shipping.

all for now.

Derrick Jensen & RadioRoxanne-Premise One
Current mood: thankful

Here is the audio link, (which Lo at Dandelion Salad posted below, too--Thanks, Lo! :)  http://www.spiritmorphstudio.com/radioroxanne10-7-2008.html --Sorry for the confusion about this--The link should be more obvious in the beginning of my postings, and not buried in the text.  I do hope the text gets read, too, but just in case, I thought I'd edit this.  Thank you!!!

***

Just got word from my Masterful Webmaster that this is posted...

To my many friends who've generously given me permission to use their music with these audio segments, THANK YOU!!!  I did not yet get to the point of mixing in any music YET, but I will...  It's just too urgent a matter to put off posting this NOW, and get the music in later, and as this project develops....

**

This post is a link to a 27 min. 59 sec. Radio Roxanne audio interview with writer and environmental activist Derrick Jensen  .  This is the 1st in a series of 20 interviews based on his 20 premises  from his 2 volume book, __Endgame__.

At a time when the whole world is reeling from a collapsing economy, it's a good idea to ask what is the relationship between the economy and the planet, when every eco-system is also in collapse ....  And to ask:  What is worthy of saving from collapse, "the markets", or the planet we call our home?  (And to recognize we can have one, or the other, but not both...)  Yesterday I posted a Naomi Wolf video calling for direct action regarding the criminals in the white house...  It's a place to start, but it doesn't end there...

As the economy continues to collapse, and further social and political collapse follows (including the collapse of infrastructures that were already collapsing, and now will be less of a priority by collapsing state govt's), it's imperative to make sure the planet can support life beyond our current crisis, despite the collapse of any form of government we've been taught to believe is what we need to save so that gov't will save us (even though we should have learned at least from Katrina --and Ike  --and Gustav--that this is nonsense!!)

In this first interview in the series, we talk about:

What is "civilization"?
What is "sustainable"?  ---One in four mammals is at risk of disappearing forever, according to the latest assessment by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.  Is that "sustainable"?
What is "industrial"?
What is meant by "resources"?
We also discuss peak oil, the proper predator prey relationship and how that is related to sustainability, and...

Vandana Shiva points out in her book __Earth Democracy__, the root word of Ecology and Economy are the same:  Eco.  Meaning: HOME.  Now think about this:  If what you were taught to believe is that your home depends upon a cultural construct (the economy ), (and yes, that's what we were taught to believe in the dominant culture) and that construct is under threat of collapse....

...AND:  If you also know that your REAL, unconstructed, physical world--Your REAL HOME--Is also under threat... ( ~In part from too many constructs~)

...Which would you try to save?  Which would you protect from collapse?

Derrick Jensen is the author of at least 12 books , most recently:

--__How Shall I Live My Life?__--A series of interviews with others about liberating the earth from civilization...

--And, co-authored with artist-activist Stephanie MacMillan, the graphic novel, __As the World Burns__(__50 Simple Things You Can Do To Stay In Denial__)
-This is a hilarious and biting social commentary critiqueing the environmental movement, especially lifestyle activism.  It's a wonderful, heartwrenching story of passionate resistance personified in the lead characters of Franti and Bunnista the activist rabbit who escaped from a vivisection lab.  A book I personally love!

Jensen wrote his Two Volume book, __Endgame__ in 2004.  Since then, he has travelled to hundreds of cities to give his Endgame talk--A bold exploration of---and call to resist--and dismantle--civilization.

In this interview, from August 12th, 2008--The first in a series of 20 based on the premises in his book, we started with...

"Premise One:  Civilization is not and can never be sustainable.  This is especially true of industrial civilization."

Because it is so unusual for a book to state its author's premises up front, we began by asking why Jensen chose to do so...

Radio Roxanne is a production of Spiritmorph Studio of Earthstream Creative Projects, Inc.

Thank you for listening!  Please stay tuned for our next talk with Derrick Jensen about Premise Two...

getting our power back...sooner rather than later....

I aim for sharing my own work here--writing, audio, and visual work.  But:  My work springs from the material of the real world I love, the one under threat from a culture of consumption, which I hate.  I didn't create this despicable culture, but as an artist, it's my role to pay attention to it and its impact on the real broader world, so that I can use it as grist for the mill to shape a sane culture, with the intention of stopping the destructive culture of the real world of water, air, fire, earth, all of which compose human and nonhuman communities.

In that spirit, I'm posting these...

I know this "collapse" stuff is alarming.  And I do not want to cause suffering when I say this.  But the collapse of the "almighty economy" has to happen.  As much as we are screwed, and we are -----either way---- Here are four article excerpts with links about why:

1.  Economic Collapse And Global Ecology...  By Dr. Glen Barry...  14 January, 2008 Earth Meanders.....  "Given widespread failure to pursue policies sufficient to reverse deterioration of the biosphere and avoid ecological collapse, the best we can hope for may be that the growth-based economic system crashes sooner rather than later..."
http://www.countercurrents.org/barry140108.htm

2.  "...Counterintuitive though it may seem, furthermore, a serious depression right now may just be the best thing that could happen to the United States. I don't say this by way of passing judgment, or in the spirit of schadenfreude that seems to surround so many predictions of social catastrophe. Rather, a good many of the dysfunctions that are dragging America to ruin will be immediately unsustainable in a time of depression, and a certain amount of economic suffering now could spare the American people a far worse experience later on. Here are some examples..." FROM:  Wednesday, September 24, 2008 http://thearchdruidreport.blogspot.com/2008/09/rx-depression.html

3.  The Coming Expansion... by Ran Prieur...  July 29, 2002...  "...When we get our power back, you'll just pick an appropriate place and live there, and build or maintain shelter that fits the skills of you or your group. And in the transition to this, we'll survive by sleeping on each other's couches, by filling up our houses and learning to live in the same space with other people again instead of buying satanic isolation. We'll turn our lawns into vegetable gardens and feed ourselves with our own hands instead of depending on money and supermarkets. Our alleged poverty will lead us to rebuild community and autonomy that were destroyed by our alleged wealth.

Link by link, we will stop depending on and answering to higher powers and begin depending on and answering to the lower powers of our bodies and the Earth. The Earth is us too, and when we get our power back, monoculture farms will be set free to be grassland and forest again, in which humans will live in deep and enduring symbiosis. I'm not saying we'll all be hunter/gatherers, but some of us will, and at the very least that economy is the necessary safety net above which we will try other things.

When we get our power back, the homeless / jobless / moneyless will reach a critical mass where the police can no longer stop us and we know it. If an eagle wants more space, it fights a competitor, and typically neither bird is badly hurt, and both have the experience of engaging the world with their energy. This is not "violence" but a vigorous physical way of resolving conflict; it's not about control or extermination but balance. In all the known universe only civilized authorities do not work this way, do not tolerate physically fighting them or running from them, do not give any options but total submission or death. That's why all of us who have not been killed are full of suppressed rage. And if we channel this rage wisely, we will not exterminate the authorities so they can escape and come back in the form of us; we will hold them in the one position they cannot endure, of living as equals with other life, until they dissolve..."
MORE HERE:  http://ranprieur.com/essays/comex.html

4.  September 22, 2008... On the Social Benefits of Creative Destruction... Let It Collapse!...By CHRISTOPHER KETCHAM.......  "...the fact is that our economic system is a lunatic and suicidal system, and it deserves to go down. Why lunatic and suicidal? It is predicated on the delusion, accepted on every level in every modern society, that unlimited Mahnolo Blahniks are possible on a planet of limited resources. Growth without horizon is simply not possible, but the delusion remains in force, a mass glue-huff and consensus trance hallucination. Endless growth on planet earth is by definition entropic; it implies its own end. Its pursuit is therefore suicidal...."

on role of art, writing, journalism, activism

Sometimes it is a challenge to know, or remember, the following.  I usually don't like long articles like this, but this one caught my attention.  I like the distinction made between "the intellectuals" and "the intelligentsia"...And the long historical context for this particular moment, calling for radical change...

Thanks to Lo and her Dandelion Salad Blog / Work for bringing this article and these wonderful words, excerpted from the article linked below, to me this morning...:

"What is so bewildering is the conviction—and it is becoming more and more general—that in all the perils that confront us the direction of affairs is given over to a way of thinking that no longer has any understanding of itself. It is like being in a carriage, descending an increasingly precipitous slope, and suddenly realizing there is no coachman on the box."

(The Russian diplomat- poet Fyodor Tyuchev (1803-1873) in a letter to his wife about the dangerous road ahead toward revolution)

"...For as always and everywhere post-commitment intellectuals like Lévy find themselves in the blind alley of having to try to justify social injustice...Given his impeccable credentials as an elegant counter-revolutionary, it should come as no surprise that Henri-Lévy, thick central casting Hollywood French accent and all, is warmly received, some would say fawned upon in the most distinguished precincts of the American media establishment, from the intellectually clueless Charlie Rose to the pseudo-left gnomes at NPR....

"... For example, writers and journalists. Are they mere intellectuals as was Borges, or intelligentsia? According to the Russian Communist theorist Georgy Plekhanov, "the belief in art for art's sake arises when artists and people keenly interested in art are hopelessly out of harmony with their social environment." Art for art's sake is the attempt to instill ideal life in one who has no real life. Authoritarian systems rely on compromised writers to portray false images because they fear the truthful portrayal of reality. The compromised writer follows the victors. Conformity and opportunism go hand in hand.

"...As the great Gabriel García Márquez taught his journalism students, above all you must learn to be partial...."

"...• No honest journalist-writer can allow himself to be unbiased and objective. After all, few of us are academics.

"...• Besides, impartial to what? To lies? To rampant hypocrisy? To swindles?..."

Radio Roxanne: Where is the Water-PART 2
Current mood: restless

This is an 11min audio segment-- part 2 in a series as part of a larger project.... Link here and after the intro, below.

From what source does your life spring?

Do your dreams of the future of the world include descendants of the next 150 years--or 7 generations ?

Do your ancestors teach you your place in a world under threat?

Water:  An essential need for life, without which humans cannot live more than three days...  Human beings in different cultures have correspondingly different relationships to water.  Most traditional indigenous humans--often hunter-gatherer, tribal-based cultures--have a relationship with water based on respect for its life, and its limitations:  They don't take more water than needed;  what they take they return;  what they return is revitalized--not toxic  --to the landbase.

The culture within which most listeners to this show live--a FAR cry from what I just described--is an industrial one:  Mechanized and mass produced for maximum consumption  , regardless of the needs of watersheds and landbases.

Sometimes natural or human-made disasters, such as hurricanes or wars, devastate water supplies.  Recent examples include hurricanes Ike and Gustav.  On another scale, in a new documentary, called "FLOW"   (an acronym for "For the Love Of Water"), filmmaker Irena Salina documents the critical global water battles   both current and future.  A similar alarm is sounded in Maude Barlow's book, __The Blue Covenant__

Given that watersheds everywhere are under assault   ...  given that this industrial culture's infrastructures are collapsing  ...  I ask the question:

"If something happened to your water supplies, do you know where you'd get your daily needs?"

Here are some answers on a Summer day, 2008, in Buffalo, New York.  Note that the answers vary according to each person's culturally-based relationship to their landbase....

ONE MORE THING:

I ask YOU now:  If something happened to your water supplies, do you know where you'd get your daily needs?

I'd like to hear your answers.  Please call:  1 (800) ROX - 0715 --That's:  1 (800) 769 - 0715.  Or, Email:  radioroxanne@spiritmorphstudio.com

Special Thanks to Hal Walker  for his song "Water Cycles".

Thank you for listening!!!!

Whose Streets?

I posted this at home this morning, and I'm not including the email of my friend to whom it refers, since it's a local search...  BUT:  The RANT is GLOBAL!!!!!

Sent: Tuesday, September 02, 2008 6:03 AM
Subject: Fw: apartment?

This note (below my signature) I'm forwarding is from my friend Alan Jamieson, to whom I promised I'd do a calendar post this past weekend, so that I could include this call for an apartment for his son and his son's family.  I don't have time to do a calendar post right now, but here's Alan's note (below my signature).  Please contact him at __________ if you know of an apartment for his brother!

I'll do a calendar post ASAP...  In the meantime, check out the latest news about the Republican National Conference, and the Fascism Now Story about Amy Goodman and other journalists being arrested YESTERDAY.  One of the ironies in this to me is that lots of otherwise smart folks are calling for people to "Call the governor and the sherriff and demand they release Amy and friends"  Now, fascists are not known for listening to the people, either about how they are destroying the world, nor how they are killing the inhabitants in it.  "Pretty Please" ain't gonna cut it, folks.  The streets have to be taken.  over.  NOW.  And what makes headlines?  While we let corporate scum take over the boards and the land, what passes for news at NPR is their playing with their silly mic-technology, sloshing around in New Orleans, to "do good storylines" and "bring the listener into the context of a story" by demonstrating what a real flood sounds like, but show that this time, NOLA made it through, and, oh yeah, Sarah Palin is a liar (Oh, shocked, fucking shocked!!)...  Here's my preferred (Steven Colbert's) take on Smilie Sarah

Thank you for reading my rant, for your consideration of my friend's search for a place for his son....

Radio Roxanne: Where is the Water?

I just got home from my jobs to find that my webmaster was working behind the scenes, and posted this for me-- a 3min 16 sec clip  --A work in progress (as part of a larger and long-term project I'm working on) of some things I produced in NYCity, at the Workshop Intensive at HarvestWorks...

If that hyperlink doesn't work, here's the url:

Here's some information about it...

When I first heard of the workshop, titled, "Sound Elemental:  Water"  naturally I started running that through my mind.  Of course, I thought about the fact that water has no place in NYCity.

That might not make sense, since I know when I said that in the workshop, most seemed to think I was mistaken or weird (they think:  "NYC is surrounded by water, how can you not know that?"), so I will explain...

Water has no place in a place where it can't be what it is;  where it can't be heard;  where it can't be the life-giving force it is;  where it can't cleanse the land and our bodies;  where instead it is polluted  extracted, exploited, imported, "redirected", over-used, wasted, stolen from the nonhumans who need it to live to keep the matrix-beast of NY going, at the expense of the planet, and ultimately at the expense of all life. Like the cricket in Times Square, who had to return home "to the country" to be fully who a cricket is, the water has a place and a language foreign to ANY city, (including Buffalo, but this was in NYC) which demands and takes more than it can ever give.  And as we know, the earth's water  is telling us precisely that.

Before I left for NYC, I got some great footage of folks at the Bidwell Farmers' Market.  I intend to post that soon (In between sessions at the workshop, I edited that and a few other things I'm working on as part of a larger project...), but in the meantime, the voices in this clip include some of what each interviewee said.  More on that later.

Also:

--Many thanks to Derrick Jensen --I used some of the quotes from an interview he and I did, which I'm editing and will post soon...

--Thanks so much to Hal Walker  (for permission to use his beautiful song, "Water Cycles", excerpted here)

--Thanks to Alex Mead  who turned me on to Hal Walker's music (and who's a walking, rapping, dancing library of music he keeps turning me onto!!)

--The music of the band "The Molotov"  (Many thanks to them for their radical rock, which I'll be using a lot more of in coming work...)

--Many thanks to the AIR Folks, and HarvestWorks for the opportunity to get a close up experience, in NYC, of why this culture of hyper-exploitation of the planet will not last;  for the opportunity to attain and hone more tools and weapons for my part in the war for the water and the land to articulate their songs.

There are a lot of things I learned in NYC, and I'm still processing.  One thing I learned is I need to learn a lot about "levels" and "compression" and "equalization", and....  Ugh, all sorts of technical mumbo-jumbo I know that when I do, clips like this audio you're about to listen to will sound better in many ways you may or may not notice right now, but I do, now that I did that workshop....

Meanwhile, I hope you like this!

Thank you for listening!

KEYNOTE ADDRESS ----ENDGAME By Derrick Jensen http://www.derrickjensen.org/

Derrick Jensen's critique of civilization, expressed partly in his axiom, "Dismantle globally, renew locally," is a rally call-both visionary and instructive: To unflinchingly acknowledge the collapse of safety, security, and sovereignty with regard to food, water, and shelter infrastructures; to boldly explore historical underpinnings of these threats relative to the unsustainability of industrial agriculture; to passionately resist and dismantle these destructive systems, ensuring the planet's restoration and the survival of the greatest numbers of all species beyond the present global environmental crisis.
