BRITAIN - THE WORLDS MOST HAUNTED COUNTRY?
Category: Dreams and the Supernatural

Forget Transylvania, according to supernatural experts Raw Fear, more than half of the world's top ten most haunted locations are in the tiny, haunted isles of Great Britain

So with just a few weeks to go until Halloween, should Brits be scared?

"For some time we have been researching every major reputedly 'haunted' location across the globe and it's true, the weirdest pattern has developed", says Raw Fear researcher James, "..being British ourselves we tried not to be biased, but the results were eerily clear – the UK has over THREE times the instances of supernatural hotspots than anywhere else!"

Our country does have one of the oldest and bloodiest histories, together with an abundance of old churches, castles, ancient burial grounds and cemeteries, so perhaps it's no surprise we are for once number one in a world cup – albeit a world cup of ghosts.

One member of their team even went so far as to spend the night in the number one haunted house! (to be precise a castle).  Leigh of the Scooby-Doo like group of ghosthunters has this advice for tourists; "if you're into the supernatural, you're in the right place - if not.. bad luck!"

Raw Fear's "Ultimate Halloween Experience" box-set is out now,  and contains the chilling results of their findings, together with creepy atmospheric horror music, party games, tricks, ghosthunting tips and spinetingling ghost stories.

You can find out more, and share your own haunted experiences on our forum at www.RawFear.net

classic movie review of the month number 2 - July
Current mood: anxious
Category: Movies, TV, Celebrities

An American Werewolf in London A werewolf attacks two Americans backpacking on the Yorkshire Moors. Jack is killed but David survives. In a London hospital he falls for nurse Alex Price, but soon suffers terrible nightmares. Then he is visited by the undead Jack, who warns that David will become a werewolf at the next full moon According to John Landis, he had had a horror movie in mind since 1969, when as a stuntman working on a Clint Eastwood picture called Kellys Heroes he witnessed a rapist being buried by locals in a Yugoslavian village. The unusual ritual that took place before his eyes made Landis wonder about the place of religion and superstition in the modern world, and whether he could make a film-going audience buy into a tale of the supernatural. He set about writing An American Werewolf in London, but had to wait until 1981 before he was able to shoot it. To call this film an oddity is something of an understatement. An American Werewolf...... has achieved cult status and it is not difficult to appreciate why lovers of irreverent cult culture hold it in such high esteem. Critics, on the other hand, gave the film a lukewarm reception when it first came out, and many still have problems with how Landis script blends explicit gore with sardonic humour. Which leaves the more nostalgic critics like myself believing Landis and his horror-comedy to be guilty of an injustice. The memorable scenes are countless, but no where is An American Werewolf more astonishing than in Rick Bakers Oscar winning special effects, which peak at the much-celebrated metamorphosis sequence in which our hero changes into a monster in full stage light. The shockingly brutal death of Jack at the beginning of the picture arguably warrants a health warning on publicity posters, such is its severity. So, too, the dream sequences, which are brilliantly bizarre and imaginative (in the final nightmare we see Davids family are together back in their American home when a band of nazi-werewolves bursts in and creates bloody carnage). The scene takes on added significance if we bear in mind that Davids family are supposed to be Jewish. (The Muppets Show playing on the television is no doubt a nod to Frank Oz, who makes a comical cameo appearance in the movie as an American ambassador). From the classy opening credits sequence (Bobby Vinton on the soundtrack, shots of the desolate Yorkshire moors on screen) to an inevitably tragic denouement, Landis direction is as assured as the films pace is unfailing. Landis invests enough time in shading his characters so that relationships are very real and in this sense very affecting. The warmth extended to the main protagonists by Landis script is one of the films successes (go through Landis back catalogue and it is filled with movies imbued with the same benevolence). Of course, benevolence is an ironic point if we consider the realistically rendered murder of Jack on the moors, and considering how others in the movie are butchered and maimed here and there by the ferocious werewolves. But that about sums up American Werewolf: where we have a movie centred on a hybrid creature, Landis aesthetic composition is itself nothing less than a hybrid of moods, of film styles and genres. That is what makes this movie such an enjoyable oddity, and is the key to unlocking its pleasures: its an Anglo-American hybrid blending US studio quality with a gritty, dirt-under-the-nails realism distinctive to British film aesthetics. Sprinkled in to the mix is Luis Bunuel (a Landis hero) -style surrealism, and visceral shocks that belong to an indie-exploitation filmmaking tradition. Cult classic status firmly affixed, An American Werewolf will continue to find a new devoted audience as long as there are devotees of subversive cinema out there. Beware the moon, lads. Terrific. Old movie classic of the month
Current mood: nostalgic
Category: Movies, TV, Celebrities

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (1984) Written and Directed by Wes Craven The film that introduced murderous villain Fred Krueger to the film-going public, A Nightmare on Elm Street was a deserved box-office hit in 1984, spawning several sequels (director Craven returned only for the seventh instalment) and a short-lived TV series. However, none of the follow-ups are close to matching the originals cinematic dexterity. In the town of Springfield Nancy Thompson dreams of a threatening figure who has knives for fingers. Realising soon after that her friends nightmares implausibly mirror her own, Nancy investigates, only to discover that the parents of Springfield harbour a dark secret: in an act of vigilantism ten years before, they burned filthy child murderer Fred Krueger alive. Now, it seems, he is back to haunt the towns teenage contingent via their dreams. Compared to the poor sequels, Elm Street 1 is in a league of its own. Under Cravens shrewd direction, aided by Charles Bernsteins eerily portentous score, the filmmakers have conceived a chilly suburbia in which dream and reality are barely discernible from one another. Craven exploits the temporal and spatial dislocation of dreams (and the cinemas unique ability to capture such dislocation) to maximum effect, so that anything, it seems, can happen at any time. The result is a genuinely unnerving experience. Accentuating this sense of disorientation and dread is the films portrayal of a disaffected youth estranged from its parentage. The script feels in this way like a correlate to the teen-alienation drama so pivotal to cult cinema in the US during the Cold War climate of Reagans era. (The script maintains some classic slasher movie motifs, too, namely the ineffectual guardian, the promiscuous victims, and the virginal heroine). Nancys mother is an alcoholic, her father an overworked cop estranged from his wife and consequently his daughter. Likewise, Tinas mother seems preoccupied not with booze or work but with a new partner, to really take a sustained interest in her daughters well being. Tina, alongside her delinquent boyfriend Rod, is obviously a sexually active figure, and this should set alarm bells ringing for the spectator initiated in slasher movie dynamics. Contrarily, Nancy refuses the advances of her man, and as the lead player, we assume that she will be the monsters main opponent at the finale. Dim the lights, lock the doors and bolt the windows, and enjoy a film in a league with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and John Carpenters Halloween as a masterpiece its genre. Prank!!!
Current mood: amused

Here's a good prank for y'all:

  • When driving with a passenger at night time, explain that you know a good short cut and turn down a narrow & secluded road / lane (ideally one with loads of trees).
  • This would be a good opportunity to tell a horror story about how people have been attacked down this very road by a devil worshiping cult. In fact any good horror or ghost story will work to build up the atmosphere.
  • At a predetermined point, cut the engine and pretend your car has died.
  • What your passenger won't realize is that your have pre-organized a couple of mates to be hiding in the lane waiting to jump out and bang on the passenger side window like deranged maniacs.

Ghost Story
Current mood: scared
Category: Writing and Poetry

How about this for a great true ghost story:
BREATHLESS

Sometimes fear can be so profound and so powerful that its effects can be felt beyond the individuals who actually experience it. Sometimes fear rips at the soul so violently that it persists long after death. Fear is not simply an emotion or physical response to danger. Fear is a force of nature that resonates through the earth. It taints the air and stifles thought. If there is no release for fear, no hope of escape then fear remains. Forever.

The tunnel was dug by hundreds of poorly paid workers using picks and shovels. Row upon row of young men hacked away at the limestone, ferrying barrows of rock back to the surface. Work was painfully slow and the conditions underground were hellish but jobs were hard to come by and the men knew that for every worker that tired or fell, there would be a dozen men willing to take their place.Accidents were frequent, and explosives were used in such a haphazard way it became a common sight to see stretchers emerging from the dark carrying workers with blooded limbs.

It was a grim life, but however unpredictable the dangers were, they were dangers that they understood. And yet the most horrific peril that awaited them in the dark had been overlooked.

Once the main body of the tunnel had been dug, a series of smaller passages needed to be cut from the rock. During the work on these utility tunnels, it became clear that along with the dark and damp, the workers were being forced to work where the air was dangerously thin. The oxygen dwindled with every flame and worker's breath. With less than a quarter of the total distance covered, the small tunnel would need to be ventilated if work was to continue...>..>

And so a solution was devised. Clean air would be pumped into the tunnel using rubber hoses attached to bellows on the surface. The new system was deemed a success and although the workers continued to suffer, the digging continued without further incidents and the tunnel progressed.

Until one day, a piece of rock in the main tunnel collapsed onto the hose, crushing it and rendering it useless. While attention was drawn to the task of moving the fallen rock, the plight of the men was overlooked. It was nearly two hours before the alarm was raised and a rescue party was sent in with a new ventilation hose. But this was all too late. Two dozen men had suffocated to death. Their bodies were found along the passage, each having tried to crawl back, gasping for air.

The bodies were brought to the surface, one by one. Their faces contorted in desperation and their bodies frozen in a crouched, crawling position in their futile scrabble for air. Those men who continued to work on the tunnel were unable to forget.

It was some months after the tunnel opened before the rumours began. A chilling story was spreading across the city. Something was in the tunnel.

One unfortunate delivery driver gave the story chilling clarity:- Early one morning he had been driving though the empty tunnel when his engine began to falter. The truck shuddered and lurched then the headlamps flickered and died. The delivery truck ground to a halt. He tried to start the engine. He tried again. There was no sign of life. He began to feel very alone.

He reached across the cabin for a flashlight. Switching it on, everything around him was immediately closer and the tunnel ahead of him, longer and darker. As he climbed out of the truck and jumped down to the road he stumbled and fell to the ground dropping the flashlight. The surrounding darkness became thick and impenetrable. He grabbed the torch and edged around to the front to inspect the engine. Strangely, there seemed to be nothing wrong with it...>..>

He began to panic and fought to compose himself. Fear was slowly taking hold of him. Every breath seemed more difficult than the last. Then he heard the noise behind him.

A faint, rasping wheeze. He turned abruptly and shone his flashlight into the vast expanse before him. In the darkness he saw a series of distant shapes at the side of the road. They were definitely moving. Coming towards him.

Frantically waving the light back and forth he counted eight or maybe a dozen of them shuffling closer and closer. He tried to shout but his lungs were empty. He could see them all now. It was a line of men, crawling slowly towards him on their hands and knees, eyes staring wide from dirt blackened faces, heads bent low like animals as they shuffled forward in his direction. They made no sound except a tortured low gasping.

The driver turned and ran. The beam of his flashlight darted erratically across the roof of the tunnel as his arms swung frantically.

When he reached the tunnel entrance, the road was bathed with the first light of sunrise. He collapsed by the side of the road, breathless.

When questioned later about what had scared him so much, he explained what he had seen. It was the tunnel workers.

They were still trapped down there and they always will be.
