Brazilian Choro
Category: Music
Hello friends, I hope everyone is well and enjoying the spring. I'm happy to announce a special afternoon concert the Sunday before Memorial Day. The Unitarian Society Sanctuary makes a very beautiful concert hall, and Santa Barbara is a great place to spend Memorial Day weekend, especially with the IMadonnari chalk festival going on down the street! Please mark your calendars for my first: Brazilian Choro Concert Sunday May 27th 3:00 pm Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara, 1535 Santa Barbara St (corner of Arrellaga) Concert in the Sanctuary, followed by a reception in the courtyard. Rebecca Kleinmann, flutes & vocals Ami Molinelli, percussion Colin Walker and Brian Moran 7-string guitars and cavaquinhos & special guest Jesse Appelman, mandolin Tickets available at the door: $15 / $10 for Students, Seniors and USSB members information: (805) 965-4583, www.rebeccakleinmann.com , www.ussb.org
I returned in March from a great trip to Brazil where I continued learning and deepened my fascination with the beautiful choro genre of Brazil. If fact, Ami, Brian and I were all in Brazil together soaking up wonderful sounds! What is choro? Choro is a Brazilian Music Style that originated in Rio de Janeiro in the 19th Century, parallel to Ragtime in the States. Evolving from a blend of the emerging samba, African rhythms, and European Art music, it is sophisticated rhythmically, melodically, and harmonically, yet what comes across is a joyful, celebratory mood that everyone can relate to.
The New York Choro Ensemble says: "It became, over the years, a form of popular chamber music, based in acoustic instruments, mostly guitar, seven string guitar, mandolin, cavaco, flute and light percussion... Choro influenced many Brazilian composers such as Heitor Villa-Lobos, Tom Jobim, and Hermeto Pascoal."
I just love the melodic and playful nature of choro. I also enjoy that the music is community based and is appropriate played in a concert hall or around a table in a club with everyone joining in. I'm excited to bring wonderful players of this style from LA and San Fransisco to join me in Santa Barbara. We'll be playing mostly choro, with some Brazilian Popular pieces mixed in, and hope you will join us for a reception afterwards in the courtyard.
Recent Press: "..Delightful...Kleinmann's flute work was breathtaking... I encourage fans of great, Brazilian music to come out and hear the group next time they perform." - Bob Comden, LA Jazz Scene, May 2007
"Flutist Kleinmann has been quietly but effectively bringing diversity to the jazz flute via her extensive world travels... Just returned from a trip to Brazil to study the sprightly choro genre, Kleinmann performs with a sterling quintet.. ." -Don Heckman, LA Times, April 2007
"Beautifully complex and unquestionably artful, [but] you don't need to be fluent in Portuguese or have a background in Jazz theory to fall in love with it ." -Greg Nichols, The Santa Barbara Independent, April 2007
"Adopt-a-Concert" This concert still needs support. By supporting this concert, your name, Business, or Ad can be included in the program. If considering sponsorship, please respond to this email.
Thanks for listening!

Australia!
Category: Travel and Places
Just a quick blog from the Southern Coast of Australia to say - this is a beautiful country. You know life is good when the national slogan of a country is "no worries." There is a light, relaxed vibe here (and I don't think this is just becuase I'm on vacation, although that adds to my own personal relaxation). Also - we've seen some phenomenal wildlife here - from snorkeling in teh Great barrier reef to seeing 5 crocidles in the wild in the rainforest, to koalas, kangaroos, wallobys (sp?), echidnas, penguins, you name it in kangaroo island. And incredible birds everywhere. I've been keeping a little recording device with me and recording all the beautiful and strange bird sounds around me here. Inspiring for a flutist!
I hope you all are well and I wish you many blessings in 2007

Happy Holidays from Down Under!
Category: Travel and Places
Hi everyone!! Happy Holidays from Sydney, Australia! This a wonderful country, with a very light, carefree feel in the air.
I hope everyone is well and I wish happiness to you for the end of this year and 2007! I posted a new song played live by our Quarteto da Luz last week - myself, Fabiano Nascimento, guitar; Ami Molinelli, percussion; and Randy Tico, bass. It's is a beautiful Hermeto Pascoal tune called Musica das Nuvens e do Chao. Enjoy!

Tonight and Please Read
Dear friends,
It's been an exciting summer so far of lots of music and travel! I'm currently at the end of one short week in California for rehearsals and want to let you know that I'll be sitting in as a guest with Ted Falcon and the LA Choro Ensemble tonight (Tuesday) at La Ve Lee Jazz Club in Studio City! I'm sure it will be a great evening! The information is below. Also please check www.rebeccakleinmann.com for some of the August gigs I have in New York, New Jersey, Pittsburgh, Colorado and Santa Barbara!! I also happy to announce that I will be performing with my quintet at the National Flute Association's annual conference in ten days!!! www.nfaonline.org I've been gearing up for this event which is being held in Pittsburgh this year and will be the home of some world class concerts and an estimated 4000 attending flute players! Wow! It is an honor and a big carreer jump for me to be chosen play at the convention. Growing up and attending these conventions in hgh school and college, I never would have guessed that I'd actually be performing at one someday! The NFA is covering the costs of sound equipment, engineer and drum rental, but I have had the task over the last months to raise all the funds for the quintet's travel, lodging and pay. I've raised most of the money I need to make the concert happen but have a little more to raise. With your help I can realize this vision for our group. If you would like to help us make this significant career move and help get the sound of our unique Brazilian/Californian/Jazz fusion out in the world, please consider contributing $10-$50. If you are interested in supporting this vision and would like more information, please feel free to contact me at rebeccakleinmann@gmail.com. My address is PO Box 91718, Santa Barbara, CA 93190. Thanks so much for all your support and love! A huge heartfelt thanks to Matt Doberteen who kickstarted my fundraising for this event with a contribution that covered all the flights (think about it) to make this thing "fly." Wow!!! Talk about support of the arts! I am incredibly grateful for this generous support and the feeling of courage I get from it to continue on this musical path!! Thanks Matt!!!

that was fun!
Current mood: creative
Category: Music
Wow - that was fun!! I just had two back to back successful shows, at La Ve Lee in Studio City and at SOhO in Santa Barbara, with some of my greatest musical friends surrounding me. Thanks to everyone who rose to the occassion and played their tails off! Jovino. Ami. Fabiano. Ted. Josh. Lorca. Randy. Zach. Brian. Katia. Miles. You guys are my family, I feel so supported by you all, and you are the joys of my life! The music was beautiful because of you guys!
Thanks to the clubs and those who helped me behind the scenes, and who keep me grounded - including Suzanne, Matthew, Daniela, Tom, Kabir, Sudama... etc. phew - I needed your help! And great appreciation to those who showed up with their ears! I was blown away by the attendance! Sorry for those who got turned away from the first show at La Ve Lee.
I learn so much from being around Jovino - he lights up the room and lifts the energy, so everyone can ride on it! So many deep things have been happening lately, it's astounding. These shows were a culmination of some of the lessons I've been learning, and also a staring point for new lessons. I was in ecstasy during the LA show, and I felt calm and centered during the Santa Barbara show. What a contrast to some past sensations of fear, dread, and worry. This is where I want to live in confidence and strength. Why not? There is nothing serious to fear - not a bad note, not a bad vibe. Anything can be overcome and lifted up into something beautiful with prescence and attention. Notes are trivial, it's what's behind them- me, this person, discovering life, dealing with pain and joy to much to handle for words. So, I'm done with words for now.
bye, R
PS - my only regret is that I didn't make an email list at the LA show - if you heard it, or if you'd like to hear the next one, please email me and I'll put you on the LA email notification list! Thanks! Rebecca
