Beer and Panties

Red Molly Tour Diary 75:

Wow, our first time at the New Bedford Summerfest was a blast! We played 4 sets over 2 days and so many exciting things happened... the first was being pulled up on stage by Eilleen Ivers to sing a crazy fun version of "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" with her awesome celtic rock band that got all of us dancing up a storm. The next day we split a set with Beaucoup Blue, our favorite father and son duo. The boys let us play and sing with them and joined on our songs too. What a way to start the day! Then we did an unplugged "meet the performers" set, where we got to answer tons of questions from the audience and scrapped a set list in favor of honoring requests. Our final set was with Women in Docs, an Australian trio who are tons of fun. Get 6 women on stage together and things get out of control. Abbie liked the way the girls pronounced "beeah" so it inspired her to do her one and only impression... Hermione telling Harry Potter to get his hands off her panties. When we form our sextet supergroup, we'll call it Beer and Panties.

We have to tell you about Passim on Thursday night, too. It was our first headliner there and so much fun. Mini volcanos, banjo jokes, and even our favorite sea-faring pirate Marc Douglas Berardo to open the show. We can't wait to go back!

Coming up: Open Air Summer Family Concerts in Norwich, VT on Thursday 7/10, The New Jersey Botanical Garden in Ringwood, NJ on Friday 7/11.

Girl Band

Red Molly Tour Diary 74:
We started the weekend at a hometown show at Hoboken's beautiful Sinatra Park, over looking the hudson river with a clear view of NYC. Then headed down to Arlington, Virginia to play at IOTA Cafe, which is actually a bar. Heh, Red Molly in a bar, who knew? We celebrated the release of our CD down there along with the fabulous Molly Venter, who also released a new CD in May. The woman can SING! I think we're going to keep her.

Sunday we did very girly things. Including pedicures and shopping. We even ventured out after sound check to get some dinner in Frederick, MD and got distracted by a store called "Lipstick and Spurs." Luckily we're a very resourceful band and managed to find quick sustenance at a 7-11 before the show. We tap our feet through all gigs, but it was especially nice to look down and see our bandmates new sparkly sandals and pretty painted toes! The gig itself was quite fun, with lots of young girls that we can only hope to inspire in a positive way.

Coming up: Club Passim in Cambridge, MA on Thursday 7/3, The New Bedford Folk Festival in New Bedford, MA on Friday and Saturday 7/4 and 7/5.

Sunday 7/6, Abbie celebrates the release of her duo CD with Anthony da Costa in Merrick, NY.

Splish Splash Lockhaven

Red Molly Tour Diary 73:
Ah, we returned to the infamous Lockhaven Summer Concert Series this past Sunday, otherwise known as the "floating stage" gig. Yup, the stage is actually floating in the river and we get to play for the "land people" who sit in the outdoor amphitheater and the "boat people" who line up behind the stage and tie their boats together for the show. What fun! Abbie decided to be a rock star and jump off the stage into the water at the end of the first set. She swam over to the boats and hung out there until the second set. The third set was cut a little short by huge bolts of lightning shooting across the sky and people running for their lives... but all in all it was a fantastic day! We really hope to come back again next year!

Coming up: Hoboken Summer Concerts in the Park in Hoboken, NJ on Thursday 6/26, IOTA Club and Cafe in Arlington, VA on Saturday 6/28 and Frederick Summer Concerts in Frederick, MD on Sunday 6/29.

Red Molly Charting!!

Wahoo!  We've broken the top 40 of the Americana Charts this week!  Happy to say we're 37.  There are only 3 artists out of the 40 on the list who are independent (without a label behind them) so we feel pretty lucky and excited!!

Songwriter’s Roundtable

Red Molly Tour Diary 72:

We headed way out to Potter County, PA this weekend for a couple of gigs and a workshop as part of the Songwriter's Roundtable. Wow, what a trip. When we got to town Friday night we found the only gas pump (with a real dial that flips) and filled up for the weekend ahead. We visited the Germania Hotel and local bar, which was a surreal experience much akin to some Patrick Swayze movie. The gig and stargazing went on despite the rain, clouds, and lack of electricity or light. These are some tough people out in Northern PA! Cornpone Sally opened for us both nights with a great mix of jazzy, bluesy, folky songs and we all got to stay at the beautiful Susquehannock Lodge. On the long drive there and back we entertained ourselves by singing TV theme songs really really loudly.

Tuesday was our triumphant return to the Watercolor Cafe and we were so happy to have such an enthusiastic sold-out crowd!

Coming up: Summer Concert Series in Lockhaven, PA on Sunday 6/22. This is the infamous "floating stage" gig. We can't wait!

Wine and Appels

Red Molly Tour Diary 71:
Wine, Women & Song made up our Friday night at Sellersville Theater in PA. Our buddy Amy Speace played a rockin, beautiful, stunning opening set in a gorgeous blue dress and got the crowd going. What a thrill for us to split the show with Tracy Grammer too! Holy cow. The Sellersville crowd has always been a little on the wild side, so we had some fun up there during our set. Even got to debut a new a cappella song, Foreignlander.

The Appel Farm Music & Arts Festival was Saturday, where we played on the same stage as Lucy Kaplansky, Matt Duke, Suzanne Vega and They Might Be Giants! It was incredibly hot, but there were enough fans crazy enough to stick it out for us. Thanks a ton to the Fruhead-Redhead crew for supporting us right up front and taking pictures too!

Coming up: Watercolor Cafe in Larchmont, NY on TUESDAY 6/10 and Songwriters Round Table in Potter County, PA and Coudersport, PA on Friday 6/13 & Saturday 6/14 (second show is a songwriting & arranging workshop).

Massachusetts and Maine

Red Molly Tour Diary 70:
Chocolate moose, real live moose and the sound of a lot of cows in a field...(moo's)! We headed up as far North as we've ever been this weekend. Thursday was our Massachusetts area CD release show at the Iron Horse. We were so honored to have the uber-talented Jim Henry open the show. His version of Vincent Black Lightning is such a treat. Abbie and Jim did the double Dobro thing on our closing number and we even got Tracy Grammer up to do a song with us on fiddle. Wow!

Friday afternoon we stopped by WUMB in Boston for a live performance. That night we played to a nice full house at The Center for the Arts in Natick (TCAN) with our buddy Steve Kirkman opening the show and sitting in with us. We're hoping to post some video from this one, since it was such a killer night.

Saturday was the big trip to Maine and the Unity Centre for the Performing Arts, a lovely little theater with vintage seats and even a balcony! We were surprised to see a few NJ friends in the audience and made a whole slew of new friends, including the stuffed moose in the lobby.

Coming up: Sellersville Theater in Sellersville, PA on Friday 6/6 and Appel Farm Music & Arts Festival in Elmer, NJ on Saturday 6/7 at 1 pm. ALSO APPEARING: Lucy Kaplansky, Suzanne Vega, They Might Be Giants, Marc Cohn!
