The Days That Would Never Come... Arriving Now!
Current mood: loved
Category: Blogging
My birthday was always at the very beginning of the school year if not the very first day of school (yes, it was a suckfest, thanks for asking). One good thing about having a birthday like that is that I remember many of my initial days at school with shocking clarity.
Turning double digits in 1982 truly stands out because there was a crazy lunar eclipse that summer and my science teacher couldn't wait to talk to us about it. She was so excited because not only did we get the longest lunar eclipse of the 20th century but we would have Halley's Comet in our future too.
She went on to explain Halley's Coment was due to come in 1986 and that we were very special because we would get to see it and it wasn't going to come around again for nearly 75 years.
In 1982 you may as well have taken 1986 and chucked it in the river. We couldn't see past recess but she was trying to stoke a fire of curiosity about something that would happen when I was 14 and a big kid... good luck with that. 1986 is NEVER going to come... at least not in the eyes of a precocious 10 year old. I remember going out to recess with my 10 year old friends and having a conversation that I will never forget.

We talked about things that seemed so far reaching and absolutely impossible that they were never going to happen. Halley's Comet in 1986 was deemed crazy talk. Then figuring out we would graduate from high school in 1990 (OMG)...just changing the suffix made it seem so much further away. So impossible, that 1990 was never going to come either. Another absolute never. Since 1990 seemed so far away the year 2000 was a mystery that we would never reach and this was far before the Y2K fiasco. Never. Never ever.
But, somehow, the years drift and those "nevers" that we were so adamant about kept coming along and we kept surpassing them. I did start driving, 1990 surely came by, I did have children, and the year 2000 rushed in without a hitch.
I thought of that day in September 1982, sitting on the playground talking with my friends about the "nevers" this weekend when I was helping my daughter get ready for her Homecoming Dance. Holding the tiny infant in my hands in 1994, I thought the day would never come that she would be in high school.
That day has arrived.
Just watching her get ready showed me that there's only so much I can control and time is not one of them. But more than the future or the past, I will take each moment as they are given to me and treasure them like time has stopped for just that fleeting moment for me to enjoy.
Here's a couple of those fleeting moments for you to enjoy:

I love Failblog.org! It's an endless sea of stupid. Just when you think your life is spiraling out of control you can check out Failblog and think that there are really people in the world who are WAY WORSE OFF THAN YOU!
Take the poor soul above who thinks that somehow Russia has invaded the state of Georgia and she just didn't see it or hear it!
I think we need more geography in school...
What are you favorite FAILs? Post em!

Be Careful of the Toes...
Current mood: warm
Category: Life
I experienced that quote today. I was in downtown going to the Wellness Expo and Race Registration for tomorrow's CVS Downtown 5K race. The event is HUGE and it's also the national championship race for the US Track and Field Association so there are elite runners from all over the world that attend. This year there are even some Olympic distance runners so the Expo and the traffic was insane.
With the race being tomorrow morning I decided to brave all this hubaloo because there is nothing more annoying then trying to register the day of the race. You end up with a race bag that can weigh a ton and no where to store anything and if there's anything wrong with your registration, bib number or timing chip it can really throw off your entire race.
Registration was in the Renaissance Hotel and it's a gorgeous and historical building with a lot of entryways.
I went in the wrong one.
Then the hostess told me to go in the elevator and go up to the lobby. In the lobby I had to locate the front desk who then directed me to a stairwell that took me back to the lowest level and then a small maze that actually led to the registration desk.
It was pretty smooth once I got there and the crews were beginning to wrap it up as there was only 15 minutes left in their shift. If you miss them today you do it tomorrow.. ugh.
So I left the way I came in to avoid the beautiful hotel lobby since my running gear seemed so out of place when I got there. As I pull the door open there's a little woman on the other side who hits me on my arm, steps on my toes, and says:
"Get out of my way."
I think I was too stunned to speak so I just looked at her with absolute shock. The woman she was with said "Sorry it's closing soon." I didn't utter a word.
Then the miserable little old lady says whips her little evil head around and speaks to no one in particular.
Evil Old Mean Lady: "Who knows where registration is?"
Me: I know.
EOML: Well where is it, it's closing.
Me: After you hit me and told me to get out of your way?
EOML: (Not a fucking word)
Me: Go downstairs and ask the hostess...
I'm sure she tunneled all over the world like I did and hopefully it was closed before she got there.
It's one thing to be on a schedule. It's another to be completely and totally rude to a stranger and then have the audacity to ask for help. Let's rework that phrase a bit...
"Be careful of the toes you step on today because they may be connected to the bitch that will send you 20 minutes out of your way."

My Worst Job!
Current mood: awake
Category: Blogging
What is the worst job you have ever had?
For me, it was the first 2 weeks of working for a team of Cardiologists when I was in college. I got the job at the private practice of four cardiologists because one of my friends at school was the main doctor's child care provider on weekends and she mentioned that I was in Biochemistry.
The doctor hired me after only talking to me for 2 seconds because he believed in employing students. Sadly, the office manager did not share his love of the student workers.
The office manager's job was to put me with the other trained staff to learn how to properly administer vital signs, fill out charts, and whatever else needed to be done around the office.
My first day in the office I found out that the doctor was on vacation for 2 weeks and I was left in the "care" of the office manager who would rather that I -- and all "college types" like me -- just die than work in the office with her.
Guess what job I did?
Putting THIS

To THIS

For 2 EFFEN WEEKS!
That's right! That crazy, miserable evil bitch made me the Razor Queen! I had to dry shave hairy fucking chests the entire time the doctor was away. You may be thinking: How many times could you really have done this?
I didn't work for a pediatrician or a gynecologist... I worked for FOUR CARDIOLOGISTS who had to dry shave hairy men for every single stress test, halter monitor, and EKG.
I was scarred for life!
What was your worst job?
Be there tonight @ 10pm ET and tell me something worse than this!

September 11, 2001
Just seeing the words evokes images, feelings, fears, and thoughts. It's almost hard to imagine that it was 7 years ago that the pulse of the nation stood still. It's still hard to believe.
How are we now as a nation? How are people who were directly impacted by the events feeling now?
Wayno, a very special member of our radio show family, has written a blog titled 7 Years Ago where he shares his very personal story of how September 11th affected his family.
He will join us tomorrow for our Special September 11th Broadcast. Join us and share your thoughts.

Dream House
Current mood: content
Category: Dreams and the Supernatural
The other day I went on a day cruise around Newport, Rhode Island and had a fantastic time. Although I've been around this area for 98% of my life I couldn't believe that I somehow missed my dream house. It is absolutely beautiful and only a mere 20 minutes from where I live now.
Here she is:

Post a pic of your dream house.
I would love to see it!

Football is BACK!!!
Current mood: amused
Category: Sports
As a NY Giants fan -- thanks Dad -- for as long as I could remember, last year's Super Bowl was one of the greatest in history for me and my family.
After the Super Bowl and the subsequent dethroning of America's Sweethearts of New England, we are here again at another football season.
Who will dominate this year?
Can NY prove it wasn't just luck?
Can the Pats hold their heads up and make it to the big game again?
Who do you think has what it takes to go all the way?
What's your favorite team?
On Labor Day we will be looking at the upcoming football season! J! will co-host this show and I know that FatKid6D will certainly be there talk all things football!
Hope to see you there!
p.s. The marathon week of shows was absolutely amazing. Thank you to all of you that showed up on off nights and crazy times --6am looks great on J! and Danielle-- to really make our anniversary week special!

Katt Williams Better Get His Sh*t Together!
Current mood: argumentative
Category: MySpace
With the new MySpace Stalker Tracker (aka "Friend Subscriptions") I saw that one of my friends had become friends with Katt Williams and I love me some Katt Williams. He's hysterical and tells it like it is. I have watched obscene amounts of his stand up on YouTube and can be accused of knowing a lot of it by heart.
Apparently, I put the "Stalker" in "Stalker Tracker."
Anywho, I realize that I am not friends with Katt and since we are such amazing friends (you DID notice that I called him Katt up there) I decided that I would send him a friend request too!
My new BFF I see he has new material coming out in November so I click the ADD ME button and I notice that even though he has over 650,000 friends I have to go through the MySpace equivalent of getting something duplicated in triplicate with the email/last name/captcha combination (Olympic Difficulty 7.75).
Apparently Katt only wants his closest 650,000 friends on his list but I'm game.
I start to fill it out and then I start HYSTERICALLY laughing. Check it out and please note that I started to fill it in....
At first I thought he lost his damn mind! If you don't know Katt WILLIAMS last name then you are an idiot. Then it hit me!I wonder how many people got to that part and was like "DAMN! I really wanted to be his friend!" Then they turn around and leave.
Katt, I apologize, you aren't crazy.... You're an EFFEN GENIUS!!
Add him and get a good laugh!

Thank You, China! >>>>UPDATED<<<<
Current mood: enlightened
Category: Sports

The first Olympics I can remember is one that didn't exist. It was the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow and President Jimmy Carter made the ultimatum that if the Russians didn't leave Afghanistan than the United States would lead a boycott of the Olympic Games. Moscow didn't leave and 61 countries, including the Unites States, didn't send athletes to the 1980 Olympics.
I couldn't imagine what it would be like to train like these Olympians train, to want something so badly that you sacrifice almost everything to get there... and politics takes it away.
What I think I loved the most about the Beijing Olympics is that if there was a cause for boycott the human rights record of China could have supplied it, however, they let the Olympics be about the athletes, about the sports, about what it takes to be an Olympian.
It wasn't about capitalists, communists, socialists, or any other "ists." For sixteen days they showed the world, for the first time, just how amazing they can be. We were able to set aside the difference in our politics and see China just as it should have been seen, as another country on Earth filled with people. People that love, people that have faith, people that want the same things in life we want. They showed us their humanity, their inspiration, and their pageantry.
What if we really did boycott the Beijing Games? The world would have missed out on Michael Phelps, Nastia Liukin, Shawn Johnson, and the most humble USA Men's Basketball team ever. We would have never seen the 39 year old Romanian runner who won the women's marathon by the hugest lead ever in the Olympics, and the 33 year old Bronze medalist in gymnastics women's vault event, and 41 year old mother Dara Torres who got a silver medal in the 50 meter freestyle.
Athletes from all over the world aren't just doing a sport; they are baring their souls for something they love. They are letting a lifetime of challenge be exhibited on the world stage and it should be free of politics.
China showed us that we can have 204 countries participate harmoniously for sixteen magical days.
Thank you China, it was amazing from start to finish.
_________________UPDATE______________
What I love and respect most about blogging is getting the opinions of other people, especially people that I adore and respect. As you can see from the comments below not everyone shares my love of the Beijing Olympics... with good reason. Instead of answering individually this update if for all.
Beijing and the rest of the world found out that they would host the Olympic Games back in 2001. What were the exact conditions? I know I don't know. What I do know is that the Olympic Committee which is comprised of a huge conglomeration of people voted to have Beijing be the host city. This is no small affair as usually a very large number of countries bid for the Games with multiple cities. Some, like Turkey, vow to submit at every opportunity for the games.
After the countries have submitted their bids they are subject to a vote and some are eliminated right away with low scores while the others go through an arduous process of stadium funding and many other things. Once all the math is worked out they vote again and a host city is selected.
After this process if the people of the world and the people of the International Olympic Committee are aware of the civil injustices AND they still grant them the Olympic Games then IT SHOULD NEVER AFFECT THE ATHLETES.
I completely understand all of you and I am a champion of human rights especially on the world stage so the IOC and the voting factions should immediately deem ineligible any country where the human rights record is atrocious. But remember... Chicago is on the short list for 2016 and with our superlong and really ridiculous occupation of the middle east... many would perceive us to be ineligible too.
For many the Olympics is a once in a lifetime shot and I will stand behind their ability to have that shot free of politics.
Thank you guys for a lovely debate!!

I’m a QWERTY Fool!
Current mood: fabulous
Category: Blogging

What has happened to us? I went to this little place tonight because I felt like singing and they have karaoke. Since I went alone I sat next to one of those little bar top trivia/game machines and figured I would play a bit before my turn to sing.
So I pick this game called Mystery Phraze and it's like Wheel of Fortune. You select letters and when you think you know the answer you hit the SOLVE button and you only have a small amount of time to solve the puzzle.
After just a couple of letters I get this:
L T S T W D S D R T RR
I KNOW the answer!! So I got to enter in:
CLINT EASTWOOD AS DIRTY HARRY
However, a funny thing happened on the way to my kicking the game's ass. When you click the solve button the touchscreen alphabet appears and you have less than 10 seconds to fill in the blanks to create the answer and I LOST.
Lost. Yeah, I'm serious. I know the answer and I lost!
How?
The alphabet shows up like this:
ABCDEFGHIJ KLMNOPQRS TUVWXYZ
Um, what the hell is that? ALPHABETICAL ORDER? My brain knew the answer but my hands took the answer and tried to enter it via QWERTY!
If you aren't fluent in modern language, QWERTY is what we would've called typerwriter order on my IBM Selectric in high school. I wondered why they would take the alphabet -- which was perfectly fine in my opinion -- and reworked it.
When I asked my typing teacher WHY they would ever do something like this she alleged that some scientific research went into crafting it so that the letters you hit most on average was more accessible. I thought it was all crap and I nearly failed typing.
Kids, this is an IBM Selectric... before computers... yeah, I'm not kidding!
Flash forward 20 years and I can't solve a mystery phrase utilizing that dastardly alphabetical order that I used to love so much. Then my mind begins to wander and I start thinking of China and how after 10,000 years of civilization their native calligraphy is becoming a dying art.
What if one day I pick up a pen and I forget how to write?
