MORNING SONG written by Robin Lerner & Tommy Lee James: Charles Shaughnessy writing competition
Category: Music

The writing competition on Charles Shaughnessy's Website, inspired by MORNING SONG, written by Robin Lerner and Tommy Lee James

David Habbin recently recorded a demo version of the song MORNING SONG that I wrote with Tommy Lee James. So many of you wrote such heartfelt comments in response to David's version of this song, that his friend Charles Shaughnessy, decided to hold one of his writing competitions, inspired by the song.

You know, it's funny when a song touches someone in a way you didn't expect. I wrote MORNING SONG with Tommy Lee James in Nashville two years ago, after the Natalee Holloway incident. We've written a lot of songs together over the years and he is one of my favorite collaborators.

As a mother of a then 16 year old, Natalee's disappearance resonated with me bigtime. I couldn't stop thinking about her. I watched the coverage every night on the news. What could have happened to her? How was her mother coping? I so identified with her mother, Beth, I felt I had to write something for her. Something to give her hope. To give her solace. Even if she never heard it. Because she was living through the unimaginable horror of losing a child and not knowing what happened to her and that is something no mother should ever have to experience, yet so many do.

So MORNING SONG became a kind of anthem for that theme. The theme of loss. And how to get through it. That is why this contest will be so moving. Because we will get to hear other people's stories of loss, and share it with all of you, the fans and hearing other people's stories always helps promote healing on some level, because loss is universal. But more important, hope is universal.

I am so grateful to all of you who have written in and liked David's version of the song. Music reaches across all borders. oceans. skies. from any loss, always something is learned. I look forward to hearing what you have to say, everyone, and thanks again for your kind words and continued interest in MORNING SONG.

~ Robin

Robin Lerner and Faith Hill Celebrate Million-Air 'Kiss'

BMI Pop and Country Award-winning songwriter Robin Lerner was the guest of honor at a BMI-hosted Million-Air luncheon, recognizing the five million performance milestone of "This Kiss," the #1 smash for Faith Hill from her 1998 Warner Bros. album Faith. The Grammy-, CMA- and ACM-praised song. which Lerner co-wrote with Beth Nielsen Chapman and Annie Roboff, recently entered the list of the top 100 songs in BMI's catalog of more than 4.5 million compositions.

Based on an average length of three minutes, one million broadcast performances are the equivalent of 50,000 hours or 5.7 years of continuous airplay; played consecutively, "This Kiss" would last over 28 years.
