Gemini (May 21 - Jun 20)

It's easy to get so caught up in your dreams that you think they are real. There's nothing wrong with the luxury of being lost in fantasy as long as you can snap back to your more mundane responsibilities as needed. It's only when you start believing your illusion that trouble starts knocking at your door.

Oh, God. I'm doomed, then.

Ode Upon Hearing henry Rollins’ Complaint About Cellulite
Current mood: Loved Gary Busey at the Oscars

I find myself at a point in life
(48)
where the word
firm
applies more to my convictions
than to my thighs.

How I wish I'd had
certainty of belief
at twenty five
instead of good legs
and a tight ass.

What mistakes
I could have avoided.

Truth and Lies

Every couple of years
I have my hair cut off very short,
cropped close around the edges of my head

This time when the stylist finished her work
it appeared I had bald patches throughout my scalp

But looking past my fear,
I discovered it was snow white hair
popping out from under old dye

Just like the stray grass
that grows up through the cracks in asphalt parking lots.

2008

I've been thinking about the year to come, which is unusual for me. Most mornings, upon wakening, I check to make certain I haven't died in my sleep. It's important for me check because I am a menopausal, anorexic, prescription pill-taking, depressed wine drinker.
However, I cannot help but have great anticipation about 2008. I'm planning two shows, one in the Dalls/Fort Worth area, and one in Los Angeles, and I'll be starting work on my new, massive show, "Cautionary Tales", I am publishing my book of portraits, entitled "Sacred Lives" in the Autumn, plus I have signed on with a new magazine to make portraits for them, I will continue to teach art and voice to young people at the Studios at UBC, and, if I am accepted, I will be returning to university to complete my Masters degree in printmaking at the ripe old age of...ooh!...49!
I probably should try live out the year,
even though my art would be worth MUCH more if I were to die.
Now, back to work.

Ode to Russell Crowe
Current mood: Thinking about new subjects

Oh, Russell Crowe.
You of the golden meaty face
and the cattle ranch and the Oscar
and the hotel phone.

I love to watch you on the screen,
all granite and lava,
teetering on bombast,
but keeping it beautifully in check.

I know you won't remember
the time I threw enormous nylon panties at you
when you performed with your band in Austin.
I'd painted them with a big period stain
in the shape of Texas.

Where have you gone?
Has a beery roar undone you?
They don't understand in America
how to settle things with a punch and a piss
and a cup of tea in the morning.
