SLOPPY SECONDS reviewed by Nick Cato!
Current mood: amorous
Category: Writing and Poetry
Review by Nick Cato.
SLOPPY SECONDS by Wrath James White (2008 Skullvines Press / 48 pp. / cb)
After a funny introduction by Mark McLaughlin, the author gives a brief history of his involvement in the World Horror Convention's annual "Gross-Out" contests. We're then plunged head-first into five of Wrath's entries into this contest, in print here for the first time (a brutal 6th story, HURTING HIM, caps this truly demented offering off--if you're able to get that far!).
For those who don't know, the purpose of the Gross-Out contest is to (duh!) out-gross the other contestants--and the judges--for top prizes. How Wrath never won top prize (he usually came in 2nd) will blow your mind as you attempt to read these short and sick stories without gagging, losing your lunch, or having your head examined for being sucked into the author's relentless prose.
SLOPPY SECONDS isn't for everyone (myself included!). While I watched Wrath perform one of these stories, ALIVE, at the 2005 WHC in NY (about a cannibal who works in an abortion clinic), it's safe to say that if you're not a fan of the extremist of the extreme you'll probably get disgusted quite quickly. FELCHING THE WORM, despite being as extreme as any other story here, is absolutely hysterical. But don't say I didn't warn you.

Friday 6:30pm - Film Remakes: Exhuming the Past? Movies/Bloomington Room
Everything old is new again. Why can't Hollywood come up with a new idea? Do new
interpretations of classic movies have their own merit?
Michael Beitscher, Todd C. Hansen, S.D. Hintz, Stephan Stomberg, Jason D. Wittman
Sunday - 12:30pm - Material Adaptation Comics/Atrium 3
What's the writing process like for adapting material from one medium (like a movie
script) to another (like a novel). What about using licensed characters that someone else
created? Roy C. Booth, S.D. Hintz, Vincent Truitner, Greg Weisman, Marv Wolfman
Sunday 2:00pm - Panel: Specters, Shades an..oplasm
The ghost story is a classic tale that never seems to die out. What's the nature
of the appeal of a good spooky tale about the restless dead? What do hauntings
say about us? Let's talk about the good, the bad and the ugly portrayals of
ghosts in genre fiction.
Jerrod Balzer, S.D. Hintz, Kenneth Hite, Catherine Lundoff

Garry Charles reviews INTO THE CRUEL SEA
Current mood: focused
Category: Writing and Poetry
INTO THE CRUEL SEA Rich Ristow Skullvines Press 52 Pages
Before I review this I have an urge to shout at the author, RICH RISTOW. I want to grab him by the lapels and scream, the veins in my neck standing proud as my spittle sprays his face.
"Why so mad?" you query.
Because INTO THE CRUEL SEA should be a full sized novel. It is screaming out to be extended, filled out and made real. Rich, you must go back to the PC and give the readers what they deserve. Make this into a novel…Go on, do it now!!!
But, joking aside, this novelette from Skullvines Press is a stunning read and one I ate up within an hour without putting it down. RICH RISTOW has penned a neat little story about love, life and murderous sea creatures that I can't recommend enough.
RICH manages to fit a hell of a lot into the short page count and (despite still wanting to see it as a novel) I do believe he has created a satisfying tale with fully fleshed out characters.
I refuse to give anything else away about this little jewel of a book. All I can say is that if you have some spare change hanging around get it together and order INTO THE CRUEL SEA
