Another man down............
Current mood: Sentimental.

So, it was just over a year ago that my good friend and Blues Sparring Partner, Mr C, was taken prematurely by Cancer. Last week another friend died at his sisters home in Dorset whilst he was down there visiting her. He was someone I'd known for about 20-25 years, he was a well known 'character' around the village. He had always been very supportive of anything I, or anyone I was involved with musically, happened to be doing at any given time. He had been a Session Drummer and had played with quite a few groups, one of which was Procol Harem. He'd been having health problems in recent years due to a Motorcycle accident years ago, a Stroke, Arthritis and complications after some recent Surgery. It still came as a bit of a shock as I'd only seen him a couple of days before he left for his sisters place!

So, as I raise my glass to Mr C,

WOMAD. The Final Episode.
Current mood: Flagellated.

Here it is.....
The final part of the WOMAD Blog!!!!

So, after having gone to bed at about 7.30am on Saturday morning I was rudely awakened by some idiot drunkenly stumbling into a Metal Fence around our compound at about 9.00am!! It was so hot that there was no chance of getting back to sleep so I decided to take a shower and get some Breakfast!
I (stupidly) decided to go to the Main Shop and help open up at 10.30am. Just after having opened the Shop I ended up helping serve behind the Counter for a while, whilst doing this I found some discrepencies in the Stock Lists. These mistakes could cost either the Suppliers or Womad a lot of money, possibly £1000's! Basically the Lists said that certain titles were not in stock yet there were hundreds in stock ready to be sold!!! I know because we supplied them in the first place!!!! I decided that I would have to go through all their Lists to make sure that there were no more mistakes!! (Remember that I wasn't supposed to be working until 3.30pm!!) I got an updated List and went to see Mick at the other Stall where we went through the list and found a few more mistakes as well as rectifying others!! I spent the next few hours going between Shop and Stall rectifying the Shops Database and Cross checking with Mick, Dave and various other Suppliers! At 2.30pm I had all Lists up-to-date and with no missing info! Now I had to decide what to do for an hour before I started work 'officially'!!!

She's worked with us for about 7 years now!!!
One year, when I got bitten on my foot by some little bastard flying thing and my foot swelled like a Balloon, she was always getting me Beer and Ice-Packs and making sure that I was OK as I was incapable of doing anything!

The Flags had changed again!!!


I wandered across to the Stall and was out the back with Carl and Sven when we heard what we thought was thunder!!!! As you can see the Sun was blazing down!!! Suddenly...The Red Arrows Display Team did a Fly-past!! I missed the first one but when they came over again I managed to capture it!!!!

They had obviously heard that I was, once again, in attendance!!!!

Well, soon enough 3.30pm rolled aroun and I had to go and do my rostered shift! I arrived at the Shop and did a bit, drank a bit, smoked a bit etc. After a while Mark turned up with some Beers for me as I hadn't had time to actually get to the Bar!!

Also there was Emilie(again!)


Over the course of the weekend we always have a few of the Bands come to the Shop and do a CD Signing session! It has become more and more popular since we started it!

For all my American Buddies!! This is a band called Dengue Fever ( I think they're from New York) who went down really well!! I didn't get to see them but I could hear them from the Shop. Their Manager Graham is a thoroughly nice Guy! Probably one of the best people I dealt with all weekend!!!!
Anyway, between then and the end of the night I really didn't see much, except my little area at the back of the Shop where I was kept busy all night long! Fortunately people take pity on me and I have a fairly steady supply of alcohol brought to me!!!
Eddy Grant was the Headline Act that night and so I asked my mate 'Fluff' to go get me some pics from the side of the Stage. Fluff is our personal Security Guard and loves working with us each year!!! Unfortunately he got one shot from out in the Crowd managed to make his way to the Backstage to get some more pics and somehow jammed my Phone in Video Mode and couldn't turn it off!!! Even though he has the same model of Phone!!! So, this is my only pic of Eddy Grant!!!

It was nearing the end of my shift and I was still waiting for some Artists to arrive with stock!
My Boots had had quite a long day and were wanting to relax in a Bar somewhere!!!!


So, after 16 hours working I was finally able to leave the Shop and go and catch up with a few of the others for some Beers!!!


I caught up with Mark, Jackie, Joe and a few others at one of the Backstage Bars, but for a Saturday Night it was a bit dissappointing!!!!!
We went around to a few others until we found one that was absolutely full of life!!! I was standing by the Bar when a hand landed on my shoulder....
I turned around and found I was staring at Kieron, an old friend from years back and another situation, who I haven't seen for about 3 years!!! We all proceeded to drink and smoke all the way through until about 8.00am!

You can see how bright it was when I went to Bed!!!

OK, so I was up after about an hours sleep!! Even though I was on the 'late' shift for Sunday! I wasn't supposed to start work in the Shop until 7.30pm and wasn't supposed to do any hours in the Stall at all!
I went to the Shop anyway, just to make sure things were OK. I ended up opening up again!!!

As you can see, the weather was superb again!!!

Now, as it was my 19th Anniversary and the last of my teen years I decided to dress up for the evening session! Well, about as much as you can at a Festival!!!


I worked on the Shop Floor for a while and then  had to do a lot of Artists Book Back. Time flew by and it was dark before I knew what had happened!!!


Lana and Claire came to check to see that it was all going well!
Claire is the Financial Director of the WOMAD Organisation! She's who I work for in a roundabout way! She knows that she can ask me to do anything to help out in the Shop and it'll get done!!

Well, we sold some more Merchandise, I sorted out several more Artists and had a couple of problematical ones (as always!!) and at 1.00am we shut the Shop for the final time for the Festival!!!
I was a happy Camper now!!! Sunday Night is Party Night for us, even though we have to start counting everything back and breaking the Shop and the Stall down on Monday morning!!


Funnily enough I don't have any pics of Sunday Night!! Let's just say that myself, Lana, Sensitive, Mick and a few others went and got very drunk!!!
Whilst we were out enjoying ourselves a lot of the Site Crew are actually starting work deconstructing the Site!!!
I went to the Stall late Monday morning, well late for me at any rate, it was about 11.00am! Sensitive and I walked over to the Stall and started sorting the Stock ready for a count back!

That's sensitive walking back to the Stall. Note in the Background the Crane beginning to dismantle the Main Stage and that the Roof and the Whole Structure is still in place!

All the Stage, Lighting and Sound Equipment is already gone!!!

By 4.00pm the Main Stage looked like this:-


Sensitive and I had worked hard in the Stall all day and so Sensitive took a 5 minute breather!


I went across to the Shop to have a quick word with them about some Stock.


As you can see, it doesn't take long to strip the Shop and start sorting things out!! That's Lana in the background waving at me.

We went and ate and returned to the Stall at about 6.00pm at which point a Security Dude came around and warned us that there was a heavy Storm on the way!!! We could hear the thunder in the distance and this time it wasn't The Red Arrows!!!!
The rain came!!!


If you look closely there's actually a Waterfall coming off the Siam Tent about a third of the way fronm the left hand side!!
We finished work at about midnight, hence why there's not many Pics, and went to Sollys for a few Drinks!! We left Solly's at about 4.00am as we had a hard day ahead and had to be off Site by about Lunchtime to stand any chance of getting in and around London to finish by Tuesday night!!!!

This was the Siam Tent first thing Tuesday Mornig as Sensitive and I got to the Stall!!


We'd got most of the Loading done last night so there was only a few bits and pieces to do on Tuesday Morning before they came to remove the Stall!!! We got there to find they'd already been and gone and the Stall was no more!!! Just a pile of Chairs and Tables and nothing else!!!!

We said our Goodbyes to all our friends that we won't see until next year and left the Site for another year!!! We got around London and back to Hotline in record time!! We went to the Pub for a bit of Dinner and a couple of Beers. Sensitive and I decided to head back for home that night rather than staying in London. We got to the Social Club at 10.30pm and I managed 3 Bottles of Newcastle and a few brandies before Steve kicked me out at 11.45pm! I went home for a good nights sleep! I didn't do much on the Wednesday and went up to London on Thursday to help Mick sort some stuff out. This took a little longer than expected so I stayed the night at Micks flat and came home on the Friday afternoon!!

So, there you have it...
That is my 2-week Vacation and how I spend it every year!!!
Shame you weren't all there, who's coming next year then??????
